  • Recently, interest in structural stability has increased due to earthquakes. Isolation systems can improve seismic ability without harming the functions and appearance of existing and new constructions, and they have established efficiency in foreign country that have experienced earthquakes. In this study, an isolation system is suggested using a natural rubber bearing (NRB) on a stainless water tank for stability assurance in an earthquake. A shaking table test was carried out to evaluate the seismic capacity of a non-isolated water tank and an isolated tank. Displacement meters in the water tank measured the behavior characteristics of the tanks, which were compared using artificial seismic waves of 0.154 g, 0.231 g, 0.341 g, and 0.348 g with water levels of 0.0 m, 1.5 m, and 2.5 m. At 2.5 m, a decrement effect was generally shown in the isolated water tank, and a bigger displacement occurred in the non-isolated water tank than in the isolated one at water levels of 0.0 m and 1.5 m. It is interpreted that the weight of different water levels affects the decrement effect. If seismic reinforcement is done, the isolated bearing should be designed while considering the fluid storage level.

  • The high damping rubber bearings contributed to reduce a seismic force transmitted to upper structures, the material properties of rubber changes with time and the rubber with age-related degradation can affect the seismic response of structures and equipments. Therefore the seismic response of structure considering age-related degradation of isolators should be evaluated. In this paper, the stiffness and damping for isolators were defined using the aging data proposed by other researchers. The reactor containment building and the auxiliary building were selected to conduct the nonlinear analysis and the natural frequency, maximum responses, floor response spectrum(FRS) were evaluated with time using the four earthquakes with different frequency contents. According to the analysis results, the seismic responses are increased by the age-related degradation of isolators and the detail inspections should be conducted up to 20 years because it was presented that the change of FRS was high during this period.

  • Base isolation is an innovative design strategy that provides a practical alternative for the seismic design of structures. Base isolators, mainly employed to isolate large structures subjected to earthquake ground excitations and to rehabilitate structures damaged by past earthquakes, deflect and absorb the seismic energy horizontally transmitted to the structures. This study demonstrated that the base isolation system may offer effective performance for bridges during severe seismic events through shaking table tests. Two base isolation systems using laminated rubber bearings with and without hydraulic dampers are tested. The test results strongly show that the laminate rubber bearings cause the natural period of the bridge structure increased considerably, which results in the deck acceleration and the shear forces on the deck acceleratino and the shear forces on the piers reduced significantly. The results also demonstrate that the hydraulic dampers enhance the system's capacity in dissipating energy to reduce the relative displacement between the bridge deck and the pier.

  • For a conventionally repaired frame-supported-transfer-slab (FSTS) reinforced concrete (RC) structure, both the transfer slab and the beam-to-column and transfer slab-to-column joints remain vulnerable to secondary earthquakes. Aimed at improving the seismic performance of a damaged FSTS RC structure, an innovative retrofitting scheme is proposed, which adopts the sector lead rubber dampers (SLRDs) at joints after the damaged FSTS RC structure is repaired by conventional approaches. In this paper, a series of quasi-static cyclic tests was conducted on a large-scale retrofitted FSTS RC structure. The seismic performance was evaluated and the key test results, including deformation characteristics, damage pattern, hysteretic behaviour, bearing capacity and strains on key components, were reported in detail. The test results indicated that the SLRDs started to dissipate energy under the service level earthquake, and thus prevented damages on the beam-to-column and transfer slab-to-column joints during the secondary earthquakes and shifted the plastic hinges away from the beam ends. The retrofitting scheme of using SLRDs also achieved the seismic design concept of 'strong joint, weak component'. The FSTS RC structure retrofitted by the SLRDs could recover more than 85% bearing capacity of its undamaged counterpart. The hysteresis curves were featured by the inverse "S" shape, indicating good bearing capacity and hysteresis performance. The deformation capacity of the damaged FSTS RC structure retrofitted by the SLRDs met the corresponding codified requirements for the case of the maximum considered earthquake, as set out in the Chinese seismic design code. The stability of the FSTS RC structure retrofitted by the SLRDs, which was revealed by the developed stains of the RC frame and transfer slab, was improved compared with the undamaged FSTS RC structure.

  • Various base isolation systems, which are widely used, are compared for aseismic performances of multi-span continuous bridge. They are the P-F, RB, LRB, R-FBI and EDF systems. Sensitivity analyses are carried out to determine the design parameters of various devices. The design parameters, natural period of the isolated bridge and friction coefficient of the bearing, are determined by the reciprocal relationship between displacement and bending moment of the structure. Then the relative effectiveness of the bearings is described. Bridge with the R-FBI system shows the smallest peak displacement of deck whereas bridge with the EDF system shows the smallest peak bending moment of the lower end of pier in numerical examples. Furthermore, the peak responses of bridge with the friction type bearing are less sensitive to substantial variations in the frequency range and intensity of the ground excitation than those with the rubber type bearing.

  • The isolators have been generally used to reduce a seismic force. If the isolators apply to the nuclear power plants(NPPs), the durability and capacity for the structures and equipments should be ensured during the life time. In this study, the long-term behavior of isolated NPPs was analyzed for ensuring the seismic safety. The properties of isolator due to the age-related degradation were analyzed. And the seismic behavior of isolated buildings was analyzed by considering the aging of rubber bearings in different temperature environments. According to the analysis results, the natural frequency of structures was increased with time. But the maximum acceleration and maximum displacement of isolated structures have not changed significantly. Although the damaged of structure did not occurred by aging of isolators, it was presented that the spectral acceleration at the target frequency of isolated structure increased with the temperature. Therefore the isolators in the isolated buildings should be carefully designed and manufactured considering the temperature-dependancy of rubber material.

  • In this paper, in order to analyze dynamic characteristics of automobile steering system consisting of many components, natural frequencies and transfer functions of each component and total system are found on FFT by experiments. Then, the data are transmitted to commercial package program, CADA-PC. By analyzing the data, the mode shape of each natural frequency and damping values are obtained. Also, the function of rubber coupling in column and telescoping effects on system are considered. C.A.E commercial program are used to compare with the results of experiments. For finite element modeling, I-DEAS is used. Data processing and post processing are operated on NASTRAN and XL, respectively. The ball-bearing and the linkage of shaft with column are modeled by spring elements. Stiffness is modified from the results of experiments. The results of those show close agreement. In the mode shape of total system, wheel mode is dominant at lower frequency while the column mode is main mode at higher . The role of rubber coupling in vibration isolation is clear on mode shape. Telescoping function makes natural frequency of column changed.

  • Different types of gas reservoir such as Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) are among the strategic infrastructures, and have great importance for any government or their private owners. To keep the tank and its contents safe during earthquakes especially if the contents are of hazardous or flammable materials; using seismic protection systems such as base isolator can be considered as an effective solution. However, the major deficiency of this system can be the large deformation in the isolation level which may lead to the failure of bearing system. In this paper, as a solution, the efficacy of an optimally designed combined vibration control system, the combined laminated rubber isolator and rotational friction damper, is investigated to evaluate the enhancement of an existing metal tank response under both far- and near-field earthquakes. Responses like impulsive and convective accelerations, base shear, and sloshing height are studied herein. The probabilistic framework is used to consider the uncertainties in the structural modeling, as well as record-to-record variability. Due to the high calculation cost of probabilistic methods, a simplified structural model is used. By using the Mont-Carlo simulation approach, it is revealed that this combined isolation system is a highly reliable system which provides considerable enhancement in the performance of reservoir, not only leads to the reduction of probability of catastrophic failure of the tank but also decrease the reservoir damage during the earthquake. Moreover, the relative displacement of the isolation level is controlled very well by this combined system.

  • This paper presents experimental evaluation of IRE (isolation roller bearing) seismic isolation device. From the combination of base isolation on the IRE system displacement response spectrum and acceleration response spectrum, the compressive strength and the coefficient of friction experiments. Also the IRE system is evaluated by environment test according to KS standards. Both the resonance and seismic experiments using a combination of the IRE and Natural Rubber Bearing (NRB) are performed in order to analyze the seismic isolation of the IRE system dynamic characteristics. For the given load and exciting frequency, the resonant frequency becomes lower, but the resonant magnification remains to be same. However, it is shown that when we consider the IRE only, the vibration on the table with the horizontal movement and the independent horizontal displacement due to the rolling motion of the plate and roller are significantly reduced. This result verifies that the proposed optimal design method of the IRE system is very effective.
