  • In this study, a dye bath was made using a mixture of distilled water, pine needle extract and bamboo vinegar. Analysis and comparison of various functions of cotton fabrics dyed using bamboo charcoal and gardenia seeds in distilled water and in the dye bath mixture were done. The summary of the results is as follows. Comparing bamboo vinegar and the pine needle extracts, the bamboo vinegar had a higher antibacterial function. In the case of natural dyeing cotton fabrics using bamboo charcoal and gardenia seeds, the additional amount of dyestuff for optimization is 10 g and 20 g respectively per 1 liter of distilled water. The suitable dye bath mixture ratio of distilled water, pine needle extract, and bamboo vinegar considering functionality and economical efficiency of dyed fabrics is 4:3:3. By using the mixture made in this study as a dye bath, improved antibacterial function, deodorization, and colorfastness can be obtained more than distilled water alone.

  • Until now, in case of natural dyeing, the appearance of medium colors were achieved by repeat dyeing with different colorants after dyeing with one colorant. In this study, however, new dyeing method for appearance of medium colors was developed by use of mixing solution of different colorants prepared with the same ratio using colorant concentrates. In combination dyeing, purple color was difficult to represent because of the Gardenia blue dye among the colorants used in this study was naby blue dye. But the other medium colors such as yellow red, green yellow, green and blue green were easily represented by use of reddish Sappan wood and yellowish Gardenia concentrates. If the natural blue dye is prepared in concentrate condition, the dyeings dyed in various colors may be obtained by combination dyeing.

  • In order to evaluate a feasibility of industrial art use of veneer such as cylindrical laminated veneer lumber, the veneers of 4 species of Korean pine, radiata pine, yellow poplar and Japanese cypress were natural dye-colored and clear finished. Natural dyes were red color originated from sappanwood, blue color from polygonum indigo, and yellow color from Amur cork tree and gardenia. the clear coats of crack seal clear and UV protection oil were applied on the dyed veneer. The dyeing and finishing characteristics through fading test were summarized as follows; In non-dyed and non-finished Korean pine veneer, lightness was decreased and yellow and red hues increased after fading test. In natural dyed- and finished-veneer, color difference of gardenia-mixed Amur cork tree was generally highest, and that of polygonum indigo was lowest. Compared to non-treatment of veneers of Korean pine and yellow poplar, color difference decreasing effect by finishing was shown in crack seal clear and UV protection oil. In addition, UV protection oil was more favorable than crack seal clear with more decreased color difference. In result, maximum values of color difference after fading for 8 days were recorded about 16 to 20, which are remarked 'very much' of 12.1 or more when reviewing with 'National bureau of standards unit in USA'.

  • After the corona pandemic, when consumers choose clothes, the issue of sustainability has become a more important selection criterion. The eco-friendly functional fiber used in the study is a smartcell, which has functions such as UV protection, decomposition of harmful substances, deodorization, antibacterial and biodegradation. This eco-friendly functional fiber was dyed using five kinds of natural dyes to examine the color change according to dyeability and dyeing conditions. As natural dyes, gardenia, turmeric, sappan wood, lac, and indigo were used. For comparison with smartcell, rayon, a cellulose regenerated fiber, and wool fiber, a protein fiber, were dyed under the same conditions to compare dyeability and color. The study results are as follows. It was found that smartcell had superior dyeability compared to rayon and wool in gardenia dye and showed lower dyeability than wool when dyeing turmeric, sappan wood, and lac dyes, but showed superior or similar dyeability than rayon. In case of indigo dyeing, the dyeability of smartcell was the best when dyed once, but it was found that smartcell had a lower effect on repeated dyeing compared to wool or rayon. Therefore, smartcell has superior dyeability compared to rayon fiber in gardenia, turmeric, sappan wood, and lac dyeing, and in case of indigo dyeing, it is suitable for light dyeing. When smartcell is produced as textile fashion products, natural dyeing is actively introduced and commercialized, and it is hoped that this study can be a reference material.

  • Yellow dye-stuffs in natural plant were extracted from a gardenia, saffron, safflower, amur tree and pagoda. And then they were used to color Korean handmade paper(Hanji) on using a mordant. The results of the degree of discoloration are as follows. 1. As for a gardenia(Gardenia jasminodes Ellis for. grandiflora Makino), the effects of coloring were outstanding in the acid area. But for the preservation, it might be desirable that used a lye in a dye-stuff obtained at $40{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. 2. As for saffron(Curcuma longa L.), when used alum as a mordant, it was colored to a medium yellow color with green color. But easily discolorated and was not desirable. And, it didn't fit in a dye-stuff of Hanji. 3. For safflower(Carthamus tinctorius L.), when pH was in the low acid it was colored to the cleaner yellow color. It was the distinction of discoloration that the degree of brightness's increase was low. 4. For amur cork-tree(Phellodendron amurense Rupr.), the effects of yellow coloring were great in the areas of acidity and alkali. But, when used alum, the degree of the discoloration was high and was not effective. 5. For pagoda tree(Styphnolobium Japonica L.), using a calcium hydroxide as a mordant, enabled the more than average yellow to be gained. The degree of discoloration was good.

  • The crocetin derivatives, crocin (1), gentiobiosyl glucosyl crocetin (3), and mono-gentiobiosyl crocetin (4) were isolated from the fruit of Gardenia jasminoides (Gj) and crocetin (2) from the processed fruit of Gj (PGj) by column chromatography. Their structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic methods including IR, MS, and NMR (1D and 2D). These compounds were evaluated for their inhibition activity on melanin production in ${\alpha}$-MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormone) activated B16F10 cells. Compounds 1 - 4 reduced melanin content in a dose-dependent manner at concentrations of 20 - 60 uM. They also suppressed tyrosinase protein and m-RNA expressions dose dependently, assayed by western blot analysis, and RT-PCR experiment in B16F10 murine melanoma cells.

  • We carried out cationization of Dak pulp (paper mulberry bast fiber pulp) which is raw material of Hanji (Traditional Korean Paper) using a (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride to improve dyeability during a dyeing of Hanji with Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) and smoke tree (Cotinus coggygria). Fiber specific charge densities were determined using polyelectrolyte titration method and K/S values of dyed Hanji was calculated by Kubelka-Munk equation. As the result, fiber specific charge density increased with degree of cationization. Colors of Hanji dyed with Gardenia did not vary significantly with degree of cationization, but cationized Hanji dyed with smoke tree showed a large increase of a* value and reddish yellow color. After-mordanting did not decrease K/S value of dyes with cationized Hanji. K/S values of dyed Hanji decreased with increasing dyeing temperature. For smoke tree, the cationization impair lightfastness of dyed Hanji without mordant. After-mordanting with copper acetate or iron chloride improved lightfastness of dyed Hanji.

  • A simple and practical method for the determination of gardenia yellow in foods was developed. In this method, analysis of gardenia yellow in food products has been carried out by the detection of crocetin and/or geniposide as indicator compounds. As a new analytical method for gardenia yellow, we adopted crocetin, which is produced from colored components of gardenia yellow by alkaline hydrolysis, as an indicator compound. The analysis of gardenia yellow was performed by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography using a Capcell pak $C_{18}$ column at wave length 240 nm (geniposide) and 435 nm (crocetin). The recovery rates of geniposide and crocetin were found to be 93.4% and 87.8% for Dan Mu Ji, 90.2% and 85.9% for milk, 92.8% and 86.5% for snack, respectively. With this method, the range of crocetin and geniposide contents $({\mu}g/g)$ were as follows: $ND{\sim}1.7$ and $ND{\sim}14.1$ for Dan Mu Ji, $ND{\sim}0.2$ and $ND{\sim}13.6$ for milk, $ND{\sim}1.6$ and $ND{\sim}0.9$ for snack, respectively. The detection limits of crocetin and geniposide were 0.07 ${\mu}g/g$ and 0.05 ${\mu}g/g$, respectively.

  • Natural colorant extracts were obtained by extraction from tumeric root, gardenia seeds, mugwort and green tea using water, methanol, ethanol and acetone as extractants at room temperature for 3 hours under shaking condition(180rpm) with liquor ratio(solid:solvent; 1:100). The main pigment components of tumeric root, gardenia seeds, mugwort and green tea are known to be curcumin, crocin, chlorophyll b and epigallocatechin gallate, respectively. The effects of the kind of extractant and pH on the color characteristics of natural colorant extracts were investigated. The solubility parameters of pigment components were determined to find adequate extractant. The solubility parameters of curcumin, crocin, chlorophyll b and epigallocatechin gallate were found to be 27.85, 29.40, 19.48 and $37.97(J/cm^3)^{1/2}$. As expected, solvents that have a solubility parameter similar to that of pigment component were generally found to be effective to obtain pigment extracts having high visible absorbance(A). The extract(pigment/solvent) with high visible absorbance was generally found to have low $L^*$(lightness) and high Chroma($C^*$, purity).

  • The extraction efficiency of orange-yellow pigment from the Gardenia was greatly depended upon the extraction time, extraction temperature, volume of solvent used and fat contents of the Gardenia. From the experimental results, the amounts of extracted pigment (P) was proportional to the $log\;t^{\;1{\cdot}15}$ of extraction time$(t;\;0{\sim}60\;min.)$, the $log\;T^{3{\cdot}73}$ of extraction temperature$(T;\;5{\sim}60^{\circ}C)$, the $log\;S^{3{\cdot}7}$ of volume of solvent$(S;\;5{\sim}50\;ml)$, and the -4X of fat contexts of sample $(X;\;0{\sim}0.\;15)$ at $18^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes. Finally, the modified empirical equation was derived as follow; $P{\simeq}1.15\;log\;t+3.73\;log\;T+3.7\;log\;S-4X-6.4$ In addition to that, the most optimum conditions of pigment extraction were determined as 30 minutes of operation time, $40^{\circ}C$ of temperature. Deffated Gardenia was more productive than natural Gardenia in the pigment extraction.
