  • Novel breakthrough random-hole optical fibers (RHOFs) are fabricated in a draw tower facility, by tapering an optical fiber preform packed with a silica powder mixture capable of producing air holes in situ at the high temperature of tens of hundreds in degrees Celsius. Structural and propagation characteristics of the porous RHOF are explained briefly. Experimental investigations of the invented RHOF are performed for pressure sensor applications. Remarkable results are obtained for the RHOF with desirable pressure sensitivity independent of temperature, as is required for harsh conditions as in oil reservoirs.

  • In this paper, a wedge prism application method was studied to design a full-high-definition (FHD)-class high-resolution flexible endoscope. In the case of the conventional flexible endoscope optical system, the F number is made large or a liquid lens is applied to obtain the same imaging performance in a wide depth of field. However, there is a problem in that the diameter of the optical system increases because an additional light guide and equipment are required. To solve this problem, two wedge prisms were applied to the flexible endoscope optical system to adjust the image distance for each object distance. First, two wedge prisms were symmetrically placed on the designed endoscopic optical system. An image distance satisfying the target imaging performance according to each objective distance was derived. Next, the wedge prism decenter value for controlling the image distance was derived. By combining these two data, a wedge prism decenter value that satisfied the target imaging performance at each object distance was applied in multi configurations. As a result of the optimal design applied with the wedge prism, a target imaging performance of more than 20% of the modulation transfer function for a resolution of 178 cycles/mm was satisfied in the entire depth of field of 100 mm-7 mm.

  • In this paper, a study is conducted on the acceptable tolerance of an alignment device to reduce the optical loss caused by the alignment tolerance of a window hermetic optical connector. To increase the transmission distance of optical signals and fiber-optic communication systems, it is necessary to maintain and improve the high optical efficiency of the connectors used to bond optical fibers. In the case of the window hermetic optical connector, the optical system is aligned through an alignment device. At this time, since the two connectors are used together, each component is fixed, and further alignment is impossible. The alignment tolerance of the housing system and pin used to align the optical system of the connector causes optical loss, leading to serious problems in the fiber-optic communication system. Thus, to find the acceptable tolerance required for manufacturing the optical-connector alignment device, tolerance analysis is performed on the components of the optical connector, such as the ball lens and the window. We also implement single-mode and multimode optical-connector systems, respectively. Based on the results, we determine an acceptable tolerance value for the alignment device.

  • This study explored the feasibility of utilizing an SWCNT-coated fabric sensor for the development of a wearable motion sensing device. The extent of variation in electric resistance of the sensor material was evaluated by varying the fiber composition of the SWCNT-coated base fabrics, attachment methods, number of layers, and sensor width and length. 32 sensors were fabricated by employing different combinations of these variables. Using a custom-built experimental jig, the amount of voltage change in a fabric sensor as a function of the length was measured as the fabric sensors underwent loading-unloading test with induced strains of 30 %, 40 %, and 50 % at a frequency of 0.5 Hz. First-step analysis revealed the following: characteristics of the strain-voltage curves of the fabric sensors confirmed that 14 out of 32 sensors were evaluated as more suitable for measuring human joint movement, as they yield stable resistance values under tension-release conditions; furthermore, significantly stable resistance values were observed at each level of strain. Secondly, we analyzed the averaged maximum, minimum, and standard deviations at various strain levels. From this analysis, it was determined that the two-layer sensor structure and welding attachment method contributed to the improvement of sensing accuracy.

  • Postsurgical infections are caused by implant-related pathogenic microorganisms that lead to graft rejection. Hence, an intrinsically antibacterial material is required to produce a biocompatible biomaterial with osteogenic properties that could address this major issue. Hence, this current research aims to make strontium-doped hydroxyapatite nanorods (SrHANRs) via an ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA)-enable microwave mediated method using Anodontia alba seashells for biomedical applications. This investigation also perceives that EDTA acts as a soft template to accomplish Sr-doping and mesoporous structures in pure hydroxyapatite nanorods (HANRs). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis reveals the crystalline and mesoporous structures, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) indicates the surface area of all the samples, including pure HANRs and doped HANRs. In addition, the biocidal ability was tested using various implant-related infectious bacteria pathogens, and it was discovered that Sr-doped HANRs have excellent biocidal properties. Furthermore, toxicity evaluation using zebrafish reports the non-toxic nature of the produced HANRs. Incorporating Sr2+ ions into the HAp lattice would enhance biocompatibility, biocidal activity, and osteoconductive properties. As a result, the biocompatible HANRs materials synthesized with Sr-dopants may be effective in bone regeneration and antibacterial in-built implant applications.

  • With a continuous occurrence of right-turn traffic accidents at intersections, there is an increasing demand for measures to address these incidents. In response, a technology has been developed to detect the presence of pedestrians through object detection in CCTV footage at right-turn areas and display warning messages on the screen to alert drivers. The YOLO (You Only Look Once) model, a type of object detection model, was employed to assess the performance of object detection. An algorithm was also devised to address misidentification issues and generate warning messages when pedestrians are detected. The accuracy of recognizing pedestrians or objects and outputting warning messages was measured at approximately 82%, suggesting a potential contribution to preventing right-turn accidents

  • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can induce severe pain but, its pathogenic mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed proteomes of human synovial fluid in the superior joint space in the patients with TMD, which is obtained during the treatment arthrocentesis. We've got this result that one of the spots was consistently down-regulated in synovial fluid of patients with TMD from analysis of protein pattern. Its molecular weight was estimated to be 33 kDa. Synoviolin was identified in our proteomics analysis of LC/MS/MS. This protein was recently reported as one of the proteins that might affect rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Synoviolin that might be associated with RA was detected in synovial fluid of patients with TMD. We can conclude that synoviolin might be involved not only in the pathogenesis of RA but also in TMD. In result, synoviolin might be involved in the pathogenesis of TMD and can be candidates as new therapeutic targets of TMD or early detection biomarkers.

  • The revolution of industry 4.0 is enabling us to build an intelligent connection society called smart cities. The use of renewable energy in particular solar energy is extremely important for modern society due to the growing power demand in smart cities, but its difficult to monitor and manage in each buildings since need to be deploy low energy sensors and information need to be transfer via wireless sensor network (WSN). The Internet of Things (IoT) / low-power wide-area (LPWA) is an emerging WSN technology, to collect and monitor data about environmental and physical electrical / electronics devices conditions in real time. However, providing power to IoT sensor end devices and other public electrical loads such as street lights, etc is an important challenging role because the sensor are usually battery powered and have a limited life time. In this paper, we proposes an efficient solar energy-based power management scheme for smart city based on IoT technology using LoRa wide-area network (LoRaWAN). This approach facilitates to maintain and prevent errors of solar panel based energy systems. The proposed solution maximizing output the power generated from solar panels system to distribute the power to the load and the grid. In this paper, we proved the efficiency of the proposed system with Simulink based system modeling and real-time emulation.
