We present the preparation and characteristics of liquid-phase sensors based on nano-porous silicon multilayer structures for determination of organic content in gasoline. The principle of the sensor is a determination of the cavity-resonant wavelength shift caused by refractive index change of the nano-porous silicon multilayer cavity due to the interaction with liquids. We use the transfer matrix method (TMM) for the design and prediction of characteristics of microcavity sensors based on nano-porous silicon multilayer structures. The preparation process of the nano-porous silicon microcavity is based on electrochemical etching of single-crystal silicon substrates, which can exactly control the porosity and thickness of the porous silicon layers. The basic characteristics of sensors obtained by experimental measurements of the different liquids with known refractive indices are in good agreement with simulation calculations. The reversibility of liquid-phase sensors is confirmed by fast complete evaporation of organic solvents using a low vacuum pump. The nano-porous silicon microcavity sensors can be used to determine different kinds of organic fuel mixtures such as bio-fuel (E5), A92 added ethanol and methanol of different concentrations up to 15%.
To address the need for new intelligent sensing, this paper introduces nano sensors made of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites and presents their preliminary experiments. Having smart material properties such as piezoresistivity, chemical and bio selectivity, the nano composite can be used as smart electrodes of the nano sensors. The nano composite sensor can detect structural deterioration, chemical contamination and bio signal by means of its impedance measurement (resistance and capacitance). For a structural application, the change of impedance shows specific patterns depending on the structural deterioration and this characteristic is available for an in-situ multi-functional sensor, which can simultaneously detect multi symptoms of the structure. This study is anticipated to develop a new nano sensor detecting multiple symptoms in structural, chemical and bio applications with simple electric circuits.
Many devices based on magnetism such as power generators and motors are frequently used in real life. Magnetic materials at nano-scale can be utilized as storage devices such as magnetic tapes and hard disk drives as well as spintronics. In addition to spintronics, magnetic biosensors are another interesting application of magnetic devices at nano-scale. Here, we briefly review magnetic nano-biosensors including Hall-effect sensors, giant magnetoresistive sensors, and tunnel magnetoresistive sensors for many biomedical applications.
Tracking the motion of tennis balls is a challenging task in using cameras around the tennis court. The most important instance of the tennis trajectory is the time of impact and touch the court which in some cases could not be detected precisely. In the present study, we aim to present a novel design of tennis balls equipped with nano-sensors to detect the touch of the ball to the court. In the impact instance, tennis ball receives significant acceleration and change in the linear momentum. This large acceleration could deform a small-beam structure with piezoelectric layer to produce voltage. The voltage could further be utilized to produce infrared waves which could be easily detected by infrared detection sensors installed on the same video cameras or separately near the tennis court. Therefore, the exact time of the impact could be achieved with higher accuracy than image analyzing method. A detailed dynamical property of such sensors is discussed using nonlinear beam equations. The results show that within the acceleration range of tennis ball during an impact, the piezoelectric patches of the nano-sensors in the tennis ball could produce enough voltages to propagate infrared waves to be detected by infrared detectors.
The effects of an addition of CNT on the sensing properties of nano ZnO:CNT-based gas sensors were studied for $H_2S$ gas. The nano ZnO sensing materials were grown by a hydrothermal reaction method. The nano ZnO:CNT was prepared by ball-milling method. The weight range of the CNT addition on the ZnO surface was from 0 to 10%. The nano ZnO:CNT gas sensors were fabricated by a screen-printing method on alumina substrates. The structural and morphological properties of the ZnO:CNT sensing materials were investigated by XRD, EDS, and SEM. The XRD patterns revealed that nano ZnO:CNT powders with a wurtzite structure were grown with (1 0 0), (0 0 2), and (1 0 1) dominant peaks. The size of the ZnO was about 210 nm, as confirmed by SEM images. The sensitivity of the nano ZnO:CNT-based sensors was measured for 5 ppm of $H_2S$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases.
The effects of a Ni coating on the sensing properties of nano ZnO:Ni based gas sensors were studied for $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gases. Nano ZnO sensing materials were prepared by the hydrothermal reaction method. The Ni coatings on the nano ZnO surface were deposited by the hydrolysis of zinc chloride with $NH_4OH$. The weight % of Ni coating on the ZnO surface ranged from 0 to 10 %. The nano ZnO:Ni gas sensors were fabricated by a screen printing method on alumina substrates. The structural and morphological properties of the nano ZnO : Ni sensing materials were investigated by XRD, EDS, and SEM. The XRD patterns showed that nano ZnO : Ni powders with a wurtzite structure were grown with (1 0 0), (0 0 2), and (1 0 1) dominant peaks. The particle size of nano ZnO powders was about 250 nm. The sensitivity of nano ZnO:Ni based sensors for 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas was measured at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases. The highest sensitivity of the ZnO:Ni sensor to $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas was observed at Ni 4 wt%. The response and recovery times of 4 wt% Ni coated ZnO:Ni gas sensors were 14 s and 15 s, respectively.
Nano-sized $SnO_2$ thick films were prepared by a screen-printing method onto $Al_2O_3$ substrates. The sensing characteristics were investigated by measuring the electrical resistance of each sensor in a test box as a function of the detection gas. The nano-sized $SnO_2$ thick film sensors were treated in a $N_2$ atmosphere. The structural properties of the nano $SnO_2$with a rutile structure according to XRD showed a (110) dominant $SnO_2$ peak. The particle size of $SnO_2$:Ni nano powders at Ni 8 wt% was about 45 nm, and the $SnO_2$ particles were found to contain many pores according to the SEM analysis. The sensitivity of the nano $SnO_2$-based sensors was measured for 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in the target gases. The results showed that the best sensitivity of $SnO_2$:Ni and $SnO_2$:Co sensors for $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature was observed in $SnO_2$:Ni sensors doped with 8 wt% Ni. The response time of the $SnO_2$:Ni gas sensors was 10 seconds and recovery time was 15 seconds for the $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gases.
In the present study, we aim to use nanotechnology sensors/actuators to capture pressure and frequency of voice singers and to send signals for improving breathing pressure. In this regard, a circular composite structure having 3 different layers are used. The core layer is nano-composite material reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets. The face sheets are piezo electric materials connected to electrical circuit capable of measuring and applying voltage to the piezoelectric layers. This sensors have extremely smaller size than conventional sensors attached to the neck of singer and, hence, minimizes the influences on the output voice of the singer. A brief theoretical framework are presented for nonlocal strain gradient theory and geometry of the sensor is described in detail. The controlling procedure along with experimental results on 20 amateur and professional singer participants are also presented. The results of the study indicate that the participants could gain benefit from the device for improving their ability in phonation and keeping their frequency at a constant level although they have difficulty in the beginning of the experiment getting used to the device.
Nanorod ZnO and spherical nano ZnO for gas sensors were prepared by hydrothermal reaction method and hydrazine method, respectively. The nano-ZnO gas sensors were fabricated by a screen printing method on alumina substrates. The gas sensing properties were investigated for hydrocarbon gas. The effects of Co concentration on the structural and morphological properties of the nano ZnO:Co were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. XRD patterns revealed that nanorod and spherical ZnO:Co with a wurtzite structure were grown with (100), (002), (101) peaks. The sensitivity of nanorod and spherical ZnO:Co sensors was measured for 5 ppm $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases. The highest sensitivity to the $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas of spherical nano ZnO:Co sensors was observed at Co 6 wt%. The spherical nano ZnO:Co sensor exhibited a higher sensitivity to hydrocarbon gas than nanorod ZnO.
