  • The use of a filler material in epoxy composite materials is an essential condition for reducing the unit cost of production and reinforcing mechanical strength. However, the dielectric strength of insulators decreases rapidly due to interactions between the epoxy resin and filler particles. In contrast to existing composite materials, nano-composite materials have superior dielectric strength, mechanical strength, and enduring chemical properties due to an increase in the bond strength of the polymer and nano material, It is reported that nano-fillers provide new characteristics different from the properties of the polymer material. This study is to improve the insulation capability of epoxy resins used in the insulation of a power transformer apparatus and many electronic devices mold. To accomplish this, the additional amount of nano-$SiO_2$ to epoxy resin was changed and the epoxy/$SiO_2$ nano composite materials were made, and the fundamental electrical properties were investigated using a physical properties and an analysis breakdown test. Using allowable breakdown probability, the optimum breakdown strength for designing an electrical apparatus was determined. The results found that the electrical characteristics of the nano-$SiO_2$ content specimens were superior to the virgin specimens. The 0.4 wt% specimens showed the highest electrical properties among the specimens examined with an allowable breakdown probability of 20 %, which indicates stable breakdown strength in insulating machinery design.

  • In this paper, the test is performed on MgO, which is used as a filler in epoxy additives, respectively (0, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0, 10 [wt%]) for HVDC(high voltage direct current) submarine cable insulating material to improve electrical properties of epoxy resin in high temperature. The breakdown strength due to increasing amount of filler increased to 5.0 [wt%] by the effects of the Coulomb blockade. However, it is confirmed that strength of dielectric breakdown decreased because the filler functioned as impurities and affected the breakdown when filler additive exceeded by 5.0 [wt%] or more. We have found that the highest dielectric breakdown strength of specimen added 5.0 wt% at $25^{\circ}C$, and is more increased approximately 13.7 [%] than virgin specimen.

  • For the purpose of practical use of epoxy composite materials, it has been widely known that adding filler is an indispensable condition for cost-effectiveness and reinforcement of mechanical strength. However, dielectric strength of insulators made of epoxy composites rapidly decreases due to interfaces between the epoxy resin and filler particles. In this paper, it is investigated that the electrical properties of epoxy resins as the function of nano-$SiO_2$ content. We obtained that breakdown voltage of 0.4[wt%] specimens is higher than the other $SiO_2$ content.

  • In this paper, we have investigated temperature dependence of dielectric breakdown voltage at epoxy with added nano-filler(MgO), which is used as a filler of epoxy additives for HVDC(high voltage direct current) submarine cable insulating material with high thermal conductivity and restraining tree to improve electrical properties of epoxy resin in high temperature region. In order to find dispersion of the specimen, the cross sectional area of nano-composite material is observed by using the SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and it is conformed that each specimen is evenly distributed without the cohesion. As a result, it is confirmed that the strength of breakdown of all specimen at 50 [$^{\circ}C$] decreased more than that of the dielectric breakdown strength at room temperature. When temperature increases from 50 [$^{\circ}C$] to 100 [$^{\circ}C$], we have confirmed that breakdown strength of virgin specimen decreases, but specimens with added MgO show constant dielectric breakdown strength.

  • Nano composite materials were multi-constituent combinations of nano dimensional phases with distinct differences in structure, chemistry and properties. Nano particles were less likely to create large stress concentrations and thereby can avoid the compromise of the material ductility while improve other mechanical properties. Corona discharge was an electrical discharge. The ionization of a fluid surrounding a conductor was electrically energized. This discharge would occur when the strength of the electric field around the conductor was high enough to form a conductive region, but not high enough to cause electrical breakdown or arcing to nearby objects. This paper shows all the studies done on the preparation of nano fillers. Special attention has given to the ACSR transmission line conductor, TiO2 nano fillers and also to the evaluation of corona resistance on dielectric materials discussed in detail. The measurement of the dielectric properties of the nano fillers and the parameters influencing them were also discussed in the paper. Corona discharge test reveals that in 0%N ACSR sample corona loss was directly proportional to the applied line voltage. No significant change in corona loss between 0%N and 1%N. When TiO2 nano filler concentration was increased up to 10%N fine decrement in corona loss was found when compared to base ACSR conductor, corona loss was decreased by 40.67% in 10%N ACSR sample. It was also found from the surface conditions test that inorganic TiO2 nano filler increases the key parameters like tensile strength and erosion depth.

  • Recently, methods that usea carbon-based filler, a conductive nanomaterial, have been investigated to develop composite fillers containing dielectric materials. In this study, we added geometric changes to a carbon fiber, a typical carbon-based filler material, by differentiating the orientation angle and the number of plies of the fiber. We also studied the electrical and electromagnetic shield characteristics. Based on the orientation angle of $0^{\circ}$, the orientation angle of the carbon fiber was changed between 0, 15, 30, 45, and $90^{\circ}$, and 2, 4, and 6 plies were stacked for each orientation angle. The maximum effect was found when the orientation angle was $90^{\circ}$, which was perpendicular to the electromagnetic wave flow, as compared to $0^{\circ}$, in which case the electrical resistance was small. Therefore, it is verified that the orientation angle has more of an effect on the electromagnetic interference shield performance than the number of plies.

  • In the last decade it has been witnessed significant developments in the area of nano particles and nano scale fillers on electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of polymeric materials such as resins, varnishes, enamel and bakelites. The electric and thermal properties were more important in the electrical equipments for both steady state and transient state conditions. This paper deals with the characterization of the electric and thermal properties of the pure varnish and zirconia (ZrO2) filler mixed varnish. The electric properties such as dielectric loss (tan δ), dielectric constant (ε), dielectric strength and partial discharge voltage were analyzed and detailed for different samples. It was observed that zirconia nano filler mixed varnish has the superior dielectric and thermal properties when compared to those of standard varnish. It has shown that at power frequency the 1wt% nano composite sample has the higher permittivity value when compared to other samples. It has been examined that the 1wt% sample was having higher inception and extinction voltages when compared to other samples. It has been observed that 1wt% sample has higher dielectric strength when compared with other samples. There has been an improvement of thermal property by adding few weight percent of zirconia nano fillers. There was not much variation in glass transition among the nano mixed composites. The weight loss was improved at 1wt% of the zirconia nano fillers.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the electromagnetic interference(EMI) shielding characteristics of fiber reinforced composites. We fabricated glass and carbon fiber reinforced composites filled with metal powder and nano carbon black. The measurements of shielding effectiveness(SE) were carried out frequency range 300MHz - 1GHz for commercial purposes such as electric or telecommunication devices. The return loss and loss due to absorption were also measured as a function of frequency in the micro wave(300MHz-1GHz) region. It is observed that the SE of the composites is the frequency dependent, increase with the increases in filler loading. The Mg metal powder filled composite showed higher SE compared to that of carbon black. The Mg metal powder/epoxy composite was shown to exhibit up to 40dB of SE. The results indicates that the composite having higher filler loading can be used for the purpose of EMI shielding as well as for some microwave applications.

  • In this paper, we studied the volume resistivity and the electrical conductivity properties of nano composites to investigate the electrical properties of epoxy composites added nano MgO. The specimens were produced by classifying to 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 10[wt%] and virgin specimen according to the addition amount of MgO. We measured the volume resistivity of nano filler using the High Resistance Meter(4329A) at the measuring temperature changed to 25, 50, 80, 100, and [$120^{\circ}C$]. As the result, it is confirmed that the volume resistivity was the highest stability and volume resistivity value is $2.6{\times}10^{17}\;[\Omega{\cdot}cm]$ at 3.0[wt%]. And it is confirmed that the electrical conductivity property is sharply increased at low electric filed region and the conductivity current density is rapidly increased at high electric filed region.
