Fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag, marble waste powder, etc. are just some of the by-products of other sectors that the construction industry is looking to include into the many types of concrete they produce. This research seeks to use surrogate machine learning methods to forecast the compressive strength of self-compacting concrete. The surrogate models were developed using Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) techniques. Compressive strength is used as the output variable, with nano silica content, cement content, coarse aggregate content, fine aggregate content, superplasticizer, curing duration, and water-binder ratio as input variables. Of the four models, GBM had the highest accuracy in determining the compressive strength of SCC. The concrete's compressive strength is worst predicted by GPR. Compressive strength of SCC with nano silica is found to be most affected by curing time and least by fine aggregate.
This study aims to examine four machine learning (ML)-based models for their potential to estimate the splitting tensile strength (STS) of manufactured sand concrete (MSC). The ML models were trained and tested based on 310 experimental data points. Stone nanopowder content (SNPC), curing age (CA), and water-to-cement (W/C) ratio were also studied for their impacts on the STS of MSC. According to the results, the support vector regression (SVR) model had the highest correlation with experimental data. Still, all of the optimized ML models showed promise in estimating the STS of MSC. Both ML and laboratory results showed that MSC with 10% SNPC improved the STS of MSC.
Steel making slag has gained a considerable attraction as one candidate of eco-materials in research fields for recycling resources. Thus, many researches have been performed but were limited to development of substitute for cement being used in the construction field. A little research work also has been done on development of higher value-added materials, including heat resistant and sound absorbing materials. For this reason, the present study were focused on macrostructure characterization of fabricated slag fibers which are applicable to heat resistant materials. The slag fibers were fabricated through a modified melt extraction method. The processing variables employed were the wheel speed and molten slag temperature. The synthesized fibers were characterized by optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the wheel speed of 1400 rpm generated better quality of mineral fibers in terms of the relative amount of shot, diameter and length. This was attributed to the relative extent of contact width between the flowing melt and the rotating wheel. The thickness of the slag fibers also were decreased with increasing the slag melt temperature due mainly to significant decrease in the viscosity of the slag melt. In addition, the lower melt temperature caused an increase in number of shots plus the mineral fibers.

This study investigates the effects of nano silica (NS) and micro steel fiber on the properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The experimental consists of three groups, each one with five percentages of NS content (0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) in addition to the 20% silica fume and 20% quartz powder proportioned according to the weight of cement added to the mixtures. In addition, three percentages of micro steel fibers (0%, 1% and 2%) were considered. Different mixtures with varying percentages of NS and micro steel fibers were prepared to set the water-to-binder ratio, such as 0.16% and 1.8% superplasticizer proportioned according the weight of the binder materials. The fresh properties, mechanical properties and elevated temperatures of the mixtures were calculated. Then, the results from the microstructure analyses were compared with that of the reference mixtureand it was found that 6% replacement of cement with NS was optimum replacement level. When the NS content was increased from 0% to 6%, the air content and permeability of the mixture decreased by 35% and 39%, the compressive and tensile strength improved by 21% and 18% and the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity increased by 20% and 11.5%, respectively. However, the effect of micro steel fibres on the compressive strength was inconclusive. The overall results indicate that micro steel fibres have the potential to improve the tensile strength, flexure strength and modulus of elasticity of the UHPC. The use of 6% NS together with 1% micro-steel fiber increased the concrete strength and reduce the cost of concrete mix.
PURPOSE. To evaluate the effect of prolonged sandblasting on the bond durability of dual-cure adhesive resin cement to computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restoratives. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Nano-ceramic LAVA Ultimate and hybrid-ceramic VITA Enamic CAD/CAM blocks were used for this study. Each CAD/CAM block was sectioned into slabs of 4-mm thickness for the microtensile test (${\mu}TBS$) test and 2-mm thickness for the surface roughness test. Three groups were created according to the sandblasting protocols; group 1: specimens were sandblasted for 15 seconds, group 2: specimens were sandblasted for 30 seconds, and group 3: specimens were sandblasted for 60 seconds. After sandblasting, all specimens were luted using RelyX Ultimate Clicker. Half the specimens were subjected to ${\mu}TBS$ tests at 24 hours, and the other half were subjected to tests after 5000 thermocycles. Additionally, a total of 96 CAD/CAM block sections were prepared for surface roughness tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluations. The Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance, and Dunn's post hoc test were used to compare continuous variables among the groups. RESULTS. At baseline, group 1, group 2, and group 3 exhibited statistically similar ${\mu}TBS$ results for LAVA. However, group 3 had significantly lower ${\mu}TBS$ values than groups 1 and 2 for VITA. After 5000 thermocycles, ${\mu}TBS$ values significantly decreased for each block (P<.05). CONCLUSION. It is important to perform controlled sandblasting because it may affect bond strength results. Sixty seconds of sandblasting disturbs the initial ${\mu}TBS$ values and the stability of adhesion of CAD/CAM restoratives to dual-cure adhesive resin cement for VITA Enamic.

Recently, excellent thermal and electrical performance of cementitious composites by mixing nano materials are being studied. The purpose of this study is to research the heat generation and power consumption of rapid hardening nano-cementitious composites. The experiment was carried out after setting the rapid hardening cementitious material, curing day, and supply voltage as parameters. Rapid hardening nano-cementitious materials were classified into cement paste, mortar, and concrete The heat performance of all rapid hardening nano-cementitious composites in curing 1 day has increased over 10℃. The rapid hardening nano-cementitious composites can exhibit heat performance within 1 day. The heat performance of the rapid hardening nano-cementitious composites is maintained after 28 days.
The methods to improve the protection and explosion-proof performance of concrete structures include the backside reinforcement or concrete material property improvement and the addition of structural members or supports to increase the resistance performance, but they are inefficient in terms of economics and structural characteristics. This study is about the basic study on the fiber composite panel cover, and the nano-composite material and adhesive as the filler, to maximize the specific performance of each layer and the protection and explosion-proof performance as the composite panel component by improving the tensile strength, light weight, adhesion and fire-proof performances. The fiber composite panel cover (aramid-polyester ratios of 6:4 and 6.5:3.5) had a 2,348 MPa maximum tensile strength and a 1.8% maximum elongation. The filler that contained the nano-composite material and adhesive had a 4 MPa maximum tensile shear adhesive strength. In addition, the nano-composite filler was 30% lighter than the normal portland cement

This study investigates the efficiency of ensemble machine learning for predicting the lightweight-aggregate concrete (LWC) characteristics. A stacking ensemble (STEN) approach was proposed to estimate the dry density (DD) and 28 days compressive strength (Fc-28) of LWC using two meta-models called random forest regressor (RFR) and extra tree regressor (ETR), and two novel ensemble models called STEN-RFR and STEN-ETR, were constructed. Four standalone machine learning models including artificial neural network, gradient boosting regression, K neighbor regression, and support vector regression were used to compare the performance of the proposed models. For this purpose, a sum of 140 LWC mixtures with 21 influencing parameters for producing LWC with a density less than 1000 kg/m3, were used. Based on the experimental results with multiple performance criteria, it can be concluded that the proposed STEN-ETR model can be used to estimate the DD and Fc-28 of LWC. Moreover, the STEN-ETR approach was found to be a significant technique in prediction DD and Fc-28 of LWC with minimal prediction error. In the validation phase, the accuracy of the proposed STEN-ETR model in predicting DD and Fc-28 was found to be 96.79% and 81.50%, respectively. In addition, the significance of cement, water-cement ratio, silica fume, and aggregate with expanded glass variables is efficient in modeling DD and Fc-28 of LWC.
Geopolymers have many advantages over Portland cement, including energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, high strength at early age and improved thermal resistance. Alkali activated geopolymers made from waste materials such as fly ash or blast furnace slag are particularly advantageous because of their environmental sustainability and low cost. However, their durability and functionality remain subjects for further study. Geopolymer materials can be used in various applications such as fire and heat resistant fiber composites, sealants, concretes, ceramics, etc., depending on the chemical composition of the source materials and the activators. In this study, we investigated the thermal properties and microstructure of fly ash and blast furnace slag based geopolymers in order to develop eco-friendly construction materials with excellent energy efficiency, sound insulation properties and good heat resistance. With different curing times, specimens of various compositions were investigated in terms of compressive strength, X-ray diffraction, thermal property and microstructure. In addition, we investigated changes in X-ray diffraction and microstructure for geopolymers exposed to $1,000^{\circ}C$ heat.
The alkali-activation reaction of two types of typical kaolin calcined at various lower temperatures was investigated at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. For the assessment of the reactivity, the temperature increase and the setting time of pastes prepared with calcined kaolin and sodium/potassium hydroxide solution were measured. Unlike raw kaolin, calcined kaolin samples prepared at various temperature showed an alkali-activation reaction according to the different aspects of the changes in the mineral phases. The reactivity with alkaline solutions was exceedingly activated in the samples calcined at $600-650^{\circ}C$, but the reactivity gradually decreased as the temperature increased in a higher temperature range, most likely due to the changes in the crystal structure of the dehydrated kaolin. The activation effect of the calcination treatment was achieved at reaction temperatures that exceeded $60^{\circ}C$ and was enhanced as the temperature increased. The reactivity of the calcined kaolin with an alkaline solution was more enhanced with the solution of a higher concentration and with a solution prepared from sodium hydroxide rather than potassium hydroxide.
