Environment-friendly materials are increasingly used as building construction materials nowadays, and the market share of those is growing. Accordingly, the research and developments in terms of environmental value are progressing steadily now. The main characteristics of environmental products are far-infrared radiation, negative-ion emission, electromagnetic wave shielding, and antimicrobial property. These products are often used in mortar and as spray on the finishing material. Nevertheless, there are hardly any research on the functional properties of concrete, the main material in construction field. Thus, we evaluated such basic properties of concrete as slump, compressive strength and air content while using such functional materials as sericite, wood-pattern sandstone, carbon black and nano-metric silver solution to focus on their functional properties like far-infrared radiation, negative ion emission, electro magnetic wave shielding, and antimicrobial activity in this research. The results indicated that the most useful material in the functional materials was carbon black. Sericite and nano-metric silver solution had a little effect on the functional property. Moreover, although wood-pattern sandstone had very high functional property, it exhibited too low compressive strength to be applied, to concrete as a factory product. Antimicrobial property of nano-metric silver solution in the concrete was not clear demonstrated, but if these specimens were to be aged in $CO_2$ gas for a long time, it might be apparent.

Plasma carbon blacks of 20~30 nm diameter were synthesized by direct decomposition of natural gas using a hybrid plasma torch system with 50 kW direct current and 4 MHz of radio frequency. The insulating rector which inside diameter of 400 mm and length of 1500 mm, respectively was kept at 300~$400^{\circ}C$ during the preparation. The ultimate analysis of plasma carbon blacks reveals that the raw plasma carbon blacks contains a large quantity of volatile which is mainly consist of hydrogen. Therefore devolatilization of raw plasma carbon blacks were carried out at $900^{\circ}C$ for one hour under nitrogen atmosphere. The devolatilization leads to the decrease in electrical resistivity and surface oxygen functional groups of plasma carbon black significantly. In order to investigate the plasma carbon as a catalyst support, devolatilized plasma black at $900^{\circ}C$ (DPB) supported PtAu catalyst was synthesized by sodium boronhydride reduction method. Electrochemical measurements and direct formic acid fuel cell test indicated that catalytic activity of DPB supported PtAu catalyst for formic acid oxidation was similar to that of Vulcan XC-72 of commercial carbon black supported one.

EPDM(Ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer) compound reinforced with carbon black having four different particle size, acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black), and silica were manufactured by internal mix and open mill. To investigate the effect of particle size of filler and filler type on far-infrared vulcanization, intermal temperature of compound, degree of curing, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were measured. The thermal conductivity of far-infrared vulcanized EPDM compound increased with increasing particle size of carbon filler, but hot air vulcanized EPDM compound is not affected by particle size. The thermal conductivity was increased in the order of carbon black < silica < acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black).
An external gelation method in place of an internal gelation method applied to the fabrication process of an intermediated compound of Uranium Oxy-Carbide (UCO) kernel spheres for Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) fuel preparation is under development in Korea. For the preliminary experiments of the UCO kernel sphere preparation using an external gelation method, the carbon black dispersion experiments were carried out using a simulated broth solution. From the selection experiments of various kinds of carbon black through dispersion experiments in a viscous metal salt solution, Cabot G carbon black was selected owing to its dispersion stability, and the homogeneous dispersing state of carbon black particles in our system. For the effective dispersion of nano-size aggregated carbon black particles in a high viscous liquid, the carbon black particles in a metal salt solution were first de-aggregated with ultrasonic force. The mixed solution was then dispersed secondly by the use of the extremely high-speed agitation with a mechanical mixer of 6000 rpm after feeding the Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) in the solution. This results in the broth solution with good stability and homogeneity alongside no further changes in physical properties.
It is very important to secure the adhesion durability between the base film and the conductive paste for the development of a sensor for detecting hazardous chemicals. In this study, an ester binder was used to improve the adhesive properties which can be a problem when applying the sensor to the cross cut 0B or 1B grade. This problem was found while evaluating the adhesive properties by coating the polyaniline/graphene nano plate (GNP) paste on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film. When 10 wt% or more of the ester-based binder was added, the cross cut grade to which the sensor can be applied was 3B or higher. It was confirmed that the excessive addition of the binder may affect the electrical properties of the conductive paste and actually decrease the reactivity to sulfuric acid. To improve the electrical property, a carbon black (CB) content was varied resulting in the optimum electrical property observed at 2 wt% of CB.
In this investigation, nano ZnO was sonochemically synthesized by a novel method using a methionine precursor. A narrow size distribution (41-50 nm) of nano ZnO was achieved that was immobilized on perlite and applied as a catalyst in catalytic ozonation. The catalyst was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, BET surface area, and field emission scanning electron microscope. The ozonation of recalcitrant Remazol black 5 (RB5) di-azo dye solution by means of the synthesized catalyst was investigated in a bubble column slurry reactor. The influence of pH values (7, 9, 11), catalyst dosage (8, 12, 15, $20g\;L^{-1}$) and reaction time (10, 20, 30, 60 min) was investigated. Although the dye color was completely removed by single ozonation at a higher reaction time, the applied nanocatalyst improved the dye declorination kinetics. Also, the degradation of the hazardous aromatic fraction of the dye was enhanced five-times by catalytic ozonation at a low reaction time (10 min) and a neutral pH. The second-order kinetics was best fitted in terms of both RB5 color and its aromatic fraction removal. The total organic carbon analysis indicated a significant improvement in the mineralization of RB5 by catalytic ozonation using the nano-ZnO/perlite catalyst.
Titanium carbides are widely used for cutting tools and grinding wheels, because of their superior physical properties such as high melting temperature, high hardness, high wear resistance, good thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. The common synthesizing method for the titanium carbide powders is carbo-thermal reduction from the mixtures of titanium oxide($TiO_2$) and carbon black. The purpose of the present research is to fabricate nano TiC powders using titanium salt and titanium hydride by the mechanochemical process(MCP). The initial elements used in this experiment are liquid $TiCl_4$(99.9%), $TiH_2$(99.9%) and active carbon(<$32{\mu}m$, 99.9%). Mg powders were added to the $TiCl_4$ solution in order to induce the reaction with Cl-. The weight ratios of the carbon and Mg powders were theoretically calculated. The TiC and $MgCl_2$ powders were milled in the planetary milling jar for 10 hours. The 40 nm TiC powders were fabricated by wet milling for 4 hours from the $TiCl_4$+C+Mg solution, and 300 nm TiC particles were obtained by using titanium hydride.
Use of the carbon nanotube is superior to general powder state materials of mechanical and electrical properties. Because its ratio of diameter and length (aspect ratio) is very large, it has been known as a type of ideal nano-reinforcement material. Based on this advantage, the existing carbon black of semiconductive shield materials used in power cables can acquire excellent properties by using a small amount of carbon nanotubes. Thus, we investigated the thermal properties of the carbon nanotube, such as thermal conductivity, specific heat, and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). We found that a high thermal resistance level is demonstrated by using a small amount of carbon nanotubes. As a result, this tendency confirms high cross-linking density in a new network in which the carbon nanotube between carbon black constitute molecules shows a bond by similar constructive properties.
Two different types of graphite, such as flake graphite (FG) and spherical graphite (SG), were used as anode materials for a lithium-ion secondary battery in order to investigate their electrochemical performance. The FG particles were prepared by pulverizing natural graphite with a planetary mill. The SG particles were treated by immersing them in acid solutions or mixing them with various carbon additives. With a longer milling time, the particle size of the FG decreased. Since smaller particles allow more exposure of the edge planes toward the electrolyte, it could be possible for the FG anodes with longer milling time to deliver high reversible capacity; however, their initial efficiency was found to have decreased. The initial efficiency of SG anodes with acid treatments was about 90%, showing an over 20% higher value than that of FG anodes. With acid treatment, the discharge rate capability and the initial efficiency improved slightly. The electrochemical properties of the SG anodes improved slightly with carbon additives such as acetylene black (AB), Super P, Ketjen black, and carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, the cyclability was much improved due to the effect of the conductive bridge made by carbon additives such as AB and Super P.

To improve the mean-life and reliability of power cables, we have investigated the volume resistivity and thermal properties demonstrated by changing the content of carbon black, an additive of the semiconductive shield for underground power transmission. Nine specimens were made of sheet form for measurement. Volume resistivity of the specimens was measured by a volume resistivity meter after 10 minutes in a preheated oven at temperatures of both 25$\pm$1[$^{\circ}C$] and 90$\pm$ 1[$^{\circ}C$]. As well, specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity were measured by Nano Flash Diffusivity and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). The ranges of measurement temperature were from 0[$^{\circ}C$] to 200[$^{\circ}C$], and heating temperature was 4[$^{\circ}C$/min]. From these experimental results, volume resistivity was high according to an increase of the content of carbon black. Specific heat was decreased, while thermal conductivity was increased according to a rise in the content of carbon black. Furthermore, both specific heat and thermal conductivity were increased by heating temperature because the volume of materials was expanded according to a rise in temperature.
