  • Recent years have witnessed increasing interest in wetland constructions in Korea as a flood control measure during the flood season and for consideration of the ecology during the non-flood season. In this study, hydraulic and hydrologic analyses were performed on a wetland construction plan for use as an alternative sustainable flood defense during the flood season, as well as a wetland that can protect the ecosystem during the non-flood season. The study area was the basin of the Topyeong-cheon stream, which is a tributary of the Nakdong River, including the Upo wetland, which is registered in the Ramsar Convention and the largest inland wetland in Korea. Wetlands were to be constructed at upstream and downstream of the Upo wetland by considering and analyzing seven scenarios for their constructions to investigate the effect of flood control during the flood season; it was found the best scenario reduced the flood level by 0.56 m. To evaluate the usefulness of the constructed wetlands during the non flood season, the water balance in the wetlands was analyzed, with the best scenario found to maintain a minimum water level of 1.3 m throughout the year. Therefore, the constructed wetlands could provide an alternative measure for flood prevention as well as an ecosystem for biodiversity.

  • In order to identify key nations and bird species of conservation concern we described multinational collaborations as defined using network analysis linked by birds that are found in all nations in the network. We used network analysis to assess the patterns in bird occurrence for 10,422 bird inventories from 244 countries and territories. Nations that are important in multinational collaborations for bird conservation were assessed using the centrality measures, closeness and betweenness centrality. Countries important for the multinational collaboration of bird conservation were examined based on their centrality measures, which included closeness and betweenness centralities. Comparatively, the co-occurrence network was divided into four groups that reveal different biogeographical structures. A group with higher closeness centrality included countries in southern Africa and had the potential to affect species in many other countries. Birds in countries in Asia, Australia and the South Pacific that are important to the cohesiveness of the global network had a higher score of betweenness centrality. Countries that had higher numbers of bird species and more extensively distributed bird species had higher centrality scores; in these countries, birds may act as excellent indicators of trends in the co-occurrence bird network. For effective bird conservation in the world, much stronger coordination among countries is required. Bird co-occurrence patterns can provide a suitable and powerful framework for understanding the complexity of co-occurrence patterns and consequences for multinational collaborations on bird conservation.

  • This study has been conducted to find out the location and amount of the subterrain water body developed in the alluvial stratum in Paho-Dong, Sungsee-Myo-n, Dalsung-Kun are. An earlier test drilling was done in this area by R.O.K. Agricultural Promotion Corporation. The area consists of a small river basin and surrounding low hills developed around the junction of the Nakdong and Kumho Rivers. The strata of this area are made of Paldal gravel, Bokhyundong and Banyawol layers which were formed in the cretaceous period of the Meso-saicera or acid dikes and covered with-irregular alluvial layers. The alluvial layer in this area is composed of rather minute particles and proportional electric resistance tests on this layer show $10^2\;-\;10^3\;\Omega/cm$. The drillings up to 12meters deep showed only the sand layer (Form 3 to 26meters in thickness) contains water. The sand layers can not be considered a good water trapping one. Applying the data from the drillings to A.Hazen's equation, $K\;=\;{cd_e}^2\;(0.7\;+0.03t)$ to get the theoretical value of the water infilterated, I calculated it as K=13.92m/day. And again the value was set to Dupuit equation, (equation omitted) to acquire the pumping water amount the result was $Q_1\;=\;77.20\;\textrm{m}^3/day$. When the data-applied to the equation for pumping water amount, (equation omitted), the results were $Q_2\;=\;122.39\;\textrm{m}^3/day$ and K = 38m/day $Q_1\;and;Q_2$ (tow types of pumping water amount) represent proper value decrease and maximum value decrease respectively. Therefore, $Q_2$ is the least amount of water we can pump. The area covers about $1,555,000\;\textrm{m}^2$ and the maximum water needed in this area amounts to $155,000\textrm{m}^3$. That means we have to drill 1,406 pumping wells. It is concluded that undertaking the project in this area is irrational or even desperate and surface water should be developed more favorably.

낙동강 수계의 수질변화 특성을 분석하기 위하여 수온$(^{\circ}C)$, $DO(mg/{\ell}),\;BOD(mg/{\ell}),\;COD(mg/{\ell}),\;SS(mg/{\ell}),\;TN(mg/{\ell}),\;TP(mg/{\ell})$ 이상 7가지의 가용자료를 선택하였다.

  • The aim of this study investigated the fluctuations of 3 characters from 3 ecotypes [early ripening (ER), middle ripening (MR), and late ripening (LR)] of 20 Korean brown rice cultivars in different storage systems [time: 12 and 24 weeks, temperature: low ($10^{\circ}C$) and room ($25^{\circ}C$)]. With increase of storage time and temperature, lipoxygenase activity, and fat acidity increased, whereas germination rate was reduced. ER cultivars exhibited the highest lipoxygenase activity of $35.49{\pm}2.46$ unit/mg protein during 24 weeks storage at $25^{\circ}C$, followed by LR ($32.73{\pm}1.33$) and MR ($32.66{\pm}1.62$) cultivars. The amounts of fat acidity also were observed by the same order (ER: $20.40{\pm}2.12$>LR: $19.68{\pm}1.86$>MR: $19.64{\pm}1.35$ mg KOH/100 g). Germination rate slightly decreased with increase of time and temperature (MR>LR>ER), but MR and LR cultivars showed the most significant changes (ER: $60.90{\pm}23.47%$, MR: $32.66{\pm}13.95%$, and LR: $32.53{\pm}5.87%$). On the basis of above results, MR cultivars were evaluated the highest quality, because high lipoxygenase activity, high fat acidity, and low germination rate have deteriorated in quality and generated off-odor. Thus, MR cultivars might be very important sources in food processing and stored dietary supplement aspects.

  • Present study deals with variations of physicochemicals including $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GABA), $\gamma$-oryzanol, free sugar, lipoxygenase activity, fat acidity, and germination rate from Korean brown rice cultivars. With increase of storage time and temperature, GABA, $\gamma$-oryzanol, lipoxygenase activity, and fat acidity increased, whereas free sugar and germination rate was reduced. Among cultivars, 'Gopumbyeo' exhibited the highest contents in GABA and $\gamma$-oryzanol during 12 weeks storage at $25^{\circ}C$ (GABA: $28.6{\pm}5.6{\rightarrow}170.4{\pm}4.6\;mg/100\;g$, $\gamma$-oryzanol: $6.1{\pm}0.7{\rightarrow}6.7{\pm}0.4\;mg/g$) and 'Ilpumbyeo' significantly decreased in free sugar during 12 weeks storage at $10^{\circ}C$ ($1,423.7{\rightarrow}1,058.4\;mg/100\;g$). Moreover, 'Taebongbyeo' exhibited the highest quality owing to low lipoxygenase activity, low fat acidity, and high germination rate. In free sugar compositions, sucrose exhibited the highest content (>70%), followed by fructose (>7%), raffinose (>5%), glucose (>3%), and maltose (>2%) during storage. Based on our results, changes of physicochemicals in stored brown rice may be important information in processing food and functional properties.

  • In an effort to interpret the characteristics of fine particle concentrations in Busan, time variations of hourly monitored concentrations $PM_{10}$ (Particulate Matter with aerodynamic Diameter ${\le}10\;{\mu}m$) in Busan are analyzed for the period from 2000 to 2005. The characteristics of aerosol second generation formation process is also interpreted qualitatively, by using the statistical analysis of the meteorological variables including temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. The result shows some significant annual, seasonal, weekly and diurnal variations of $PM_{10}$ concentrations. In particular, seasonal(i.e., spring) variations are governed by frequency of yellow sand events even for the non-yellow sand cases where yellow-sand days are eliminated in our analysis. However, in seasonal variation, summer season predominate lower $PM_{10}$ concentrations due to the frequent precipitation, and weekly and diurnal variations are both found to be reflecting the emission rate from traffic amount. Correlation coefficients between $PM_{10}$ concentration and meterological variables for non-yellow sand days show overall negative correlation with visibility, wind speed, cloud amounts, and relative humidity. However for non-precipitation days, during non-yellow sand period positive correlation are found clearly with relative humidity, suggesting the importance of secondary aerosol formation in Busan that can be achieved by both homogeneous aerosol formation and heterogeneous transformations resulting from hygroscopic aerosol characteristics.

  • A distributed model can easily obtain discharge at any grids spatially distributed in a watershed. But if there are subwatersheds which have various characteristics in a watershed, it is needed to apply a model calibrated at each subwatershed to obtain reliable simulation results for each subwatershed. In this study, a multi-site calibration module that can calibrate a distributed model at each subwatershed using observed flow data was developed. Methods to select multi-site calibration parameters, to apply subwatershed parameters, and to set subwatershed network information are suggested. Classes to implement multi-site calibration technique are designed and a GUI was developed, and procedures for runoff modelling using subwatershed parameters were established. Multi-site calibration module was applied to Sunsan watershed($977km^2$) of Nakdong river basin. Application results showed that the multi-site calibration technique could be applied effectively to model the calibration for each subwatershed, and the simulation results of subwatershed were improved by the application of multi-site calibration.

  • The objective of this research was to investigate the changes in the contents of physicochemical properties including $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GABA), total dietary fiber (TDF), amylose, protein, and fat content in brown rice through germination for 2 different years. Total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging capacities were also determined in different solvent extracts. For the physicochemical properties, GABA, TDF, protein, and fat content increased, whereas amylose levels decreased. Specially, GABA and TDF levels showed the greatest variations among cultivars and harvest years. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity significantly increased. The average total phenolic content at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL in different extract solvents occurred in this order: methanol>ethylacetate>chloroform>hexane extracts. Additionally, 'Keunnun' exhibited the highest GABA levels, highest total phenolic content, and highest antioxidant activity after germination, with increases of approximately 3.7, 2.0, and 1.9 times, respectively, compared to levels before germination. These results suggest that, because of its high physicochemical contents and strong radical scavenging activities, germinated brown rice can be used as beneficial supplement.

  • This paper aims to consider regional linkages in the Province of Young-nam mainly through a social network analysis of sociocultural activities such as leisure, friendly relations and visiting relatives. Passenger O-D data as of 2012 provided by National Transportation DB Center are analyzed using the NetMiner 4.0. The analytical results show that the sociocultural relationship between Daegu-Kyoungbuk and Busan-Ulsan-Kyioungnam is not so close. In particular, some north regions of Kyoungbuk are relatively isolated in the Province of Young-nam. This implicates that regions in the Province of Young-nam are not closely united at least in terms of sociocultural linkages although they are in the homogeneous natural environment of the basin of the Nakdong-river and share a same historical background for a long time. Consequentially this work suggests the Province of Young-nam may not be an united single region on the contrary to a notion of it so far.
