The purpose of this study is to understand the relation between the land use status in watersheds and stream turbidity. Major water quality components (flow rate, turbidity, SS, BOD, TN, TP, etc.) of two streams (Jaun and Naerin) and the land use status for each correspondent watershed have been analyzed through the field sampling and the geographical overlaying of land use and watershed map. The detailed results of this study showed that; turbidity has been increased rapidly from 1.9 to 13.0 NTU for Jaun Stream, 0.4 to 0.7 NTU for Naerin Stream, due to the increased flow rate during the period of June. The agricultural area of the Jaun watershed was $13.5km^2$ (10.1% of the overall watershed), comparing to $2.0km^2$(1.4%) of upper watershed of Naerin stream. The forest was widely distributed along the 30m buffering zone from the center of Naerin stream, which comprised 64.14% of the whole watershed area. But in case of the Jaun, the ratio of forest was 17.84%, while the ratio of farming field was 30.33%.
This study evaluates the water quality of the river near the alpine farmland in the upper Naerin stream, which is a typical stream of the upper Bukhan River with muddy water generation, by the flow examination, it aims to estimate the characteristics of nonpoint sources flowing out from the investigated area and figure out effective methods to reduce them. According to the result of water quality examination, the average BOD of the area not affected by the cultivated land among the areas of the upper Naerin River was 0.47mg/l, and total phosphorous was 0.007mg/l; thus, it maintained the cleanliness level of Ia. The average BOD of the area with the alpine farmland was 0.52mg/l, which was similar to the one of the non-cultivated land. But total phosphorous concentration was 0.023mg/l, which was more than three times higher than the area belonging to level II due to the effect of fertilizer ingredients discharged from the cultivated land. About the loadings of the investigated area generated from each of the pollution sources, BOD was 878.5kg/day and total phosphorous was 79.7kg/day. Moreover, for the load density, BOD was $2.22kg/day.km^2$ and total phosphorous was shown as $0.20kg/day.km^2$. Regarding the rates generated from nonpoint sources like land among the loadings per pollution sources, BOD was 54%, total nitrogen was 91%, and total phosphorous was 73.4%. Therefore, it was shown that most of the nutrients were produced from the nonpoint sources. The level of BOD runoff loading in the Jaun River area, where nonpoint sources were mainly generated, was 37.1kg/day and total phosphorous was 1.33kg/day. The flow rates to the generated amount were estimated as 10.5% and 4.7% each.
This study examined the epiphytes using stable isotopes. Separated epiphytes should represent the water quality. In study areas, where agricultural paddies were prevailing, biomass of epiphytes can increase nitrogen isotopes(${\delta}^{15}N$) and as a result decrease in carbon isotopes(${\delta}^{13}C$). Naerin stream and Inbuk upper areas showed higher nitrogen isotopes(${\delta}^{15}N$) than in Hangye and Buk stream. Also, stable carbon isotopes(${\delta}^{13}C$) in Naerin stream and Inbuk streams tended to increase than in Hangye and Buk stream. This can indicate the epiphytes can be a good indicator for water quality pollution.
The fish fauna and community structure were surveyed at the Naerin Stream of Puk'an River from June 1996 to September 1997. The fishes collected were 36 species, 28 genera belonging to 10 families, in which 16 species were endemic species of Korea. Oncorhynchus mykiss was an exotic fish. The dominant species was Zacco temmincki(relative abundance 42.94%), and subdominant species was Moroco kumgangensis(12.91%). The rare species less than 0.03% of all were Opsariichthys bidens, Squalidus japonicus coreanus, Misgurnus mizolepis, Leiocassis ussuriensis and Siniperca scherzeri. The species diversity, evenness, and dominance index on the fish community were 0.947, 0.609, and 0.218.

This study tries to identify distributional characteristics of stream incision rates at 23 points in the northern part of the Taebaek Mountains. Soyang-gang, Naerin-cheon, Odae-cheon, Dong-gang and upper reaches of Okdong-cheon Rivers closed to the Range show higher incision rates and the rates clearly decrease with distance from the Range. Therefore, the incision process in the northern part of the Range has been greatly influenced by uplift around the Range, and the Sobaek Mountain Range seem to play a role in the incision process. Limestone areas show lower incision rates due to degradation of terrace surface by dissolution. This study suggests that local hydrological, geological and geomorphological conditions can be regarded as an important factor in stream incision rates, although stream incision rates are greatly influenced by regional uplift.
This study selected Naerin Stream, Inbuk Stream and Buk Stream, branch rivers of Soyang Dam, also area of highland agriculture as test sites and measured flow and water quality, particularly eutrophication factors (BOD, COD, T-N, and T-P) in precipitation season and non precipitation season for a year, 2008. Based on the result, the study examined the change in water quality in relation to flow, and created flow discharged - pollution loads regression line by estimating pollution loads flowed from each branch river. And the study calculated annual pollution discharge loads for unit area and proposed regression equation on it by using regression analysis.
From 2000 to 2004, the research was carried out at Naerin-cheon and Inbook-cheon, the upper streams of Soyang Lake, to study the relationship between precipitation and eutrophication-causing water pollutants, BOD, T-N and T-P. During the five years, the amount of flowing water was measured, and the water quantity was examined under different precipitation levels. From the observation, outflow patterns of the water pollutants and changes in the water quality factors at the time of rainfall were clarified. In addition, estimation of the unit load was made for each stream; for Naerin-cheon at the time of rainfall, we estimated BOD to be $1,112kg/km^2/year$, T-N to be $2,077kg/km^2/year$, and T-P to be $223kg/km^2/year$; for Inbook-cheon at the time of rainfall, we estimated BOD to be $1,229kg/km^2/year$, T-N to be $1,565kg/km^2/year$, and T-P to be $255kg/km^2/year$. For the time of no rainfall different estimation was made; for Naerin-cheon, we estimated BOD to be $2,403g/km^2/day$, T-N to be $5,004g/km^2/day$, and T-P to be $53g/km^2/day$; and for Inbook-cheon, we estimated BOD to be $1,550g/km^2/day$, T-N to be $2,283g/km^2/day$, and T-P to be $42g/km^2/day$.
Ecological characteristics of Koreocobitis rotundicaudata was investigated in the mid-upper part of the Naerin stream in Hongcheon gun, Gangwon do, Korea from April 2006 to March 2007. It inhabited mostly on the cobble and pebble bottoms with water-current velocities of 0.3~0.8 m/sec and depths of 30~80 cm. The sex ratio of female to male was 1 : 0.78. It was presumed that the spawning season was from May to June with water temperatures $20.1{\sim}23.1^{\circ}C$. Sexually matured individuals appeared over the two years of age. Body length frequencies indicated that the 40~69 mm group is over one year old, the 70~109 mm over two years old, and 110~142 mm over three years old. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was 1,365. Main prey materials were Ephemeroptera and Chironomidae mostly.
The aim of this study is to investigate distribution characteristics of incised meander cutoff in Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces of Central Korea. The density of meander cutoff is highest in the mountain rivers including Naerin and Dongdae flowing on Jeongseon-gun and Inje-gun of Gangwon Province. Most of meander cutoff process has been occurred repeatedly during the Quaternary period, especially concentrated in the period of climatic change between glacial and interglacial stages. In the aspect of the lithology, the density of cutoff is highest in sedimentary rock, but lowest in igneous rock. As for geological structure, its frequency is high at $11{\sim}20km$ westerly away from the Taebaek Mountains, at subsequent channel, lower part of resequent channel, and channels crossing the fault line. The relation between distance from the Taebaek Mountains and altitude is very obvious at the western side of the Taebaek Mountains. The values of altitude, height from riverbed, and stream order are highest at sedimentary rock and lowest at volcanic rock.
The objective of this study was to evaluate biodiversity and natural habitat environment of freshwater ecosystem. Our aim was therefore to produce a set of biodiversity and habitat indicators based on multi-parameters of water quality and biodiversity by analyzing the characteristics of the results by indicators. We selected four indicators a) anthropogenic disturbance, b) habitat diversity, c) biodiversity, d) ecosystem structure. The fishes cohabiting with Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis were Rhynchocypris kumgangensis and Zacco koreanus. As a result of the anthropogenic disturbance evaluation, it was analyzed that vegetation embankment showed a more stable environment in the tributary than the main stream, and other disturbance was not confirmed As a result of the habitat diversity evaluation, it was analyzed that habitat evaluation index showed a high score of 200 more on average, showing an optimal habitat condition. As a result of the biodiversity evaluation, it was analyzed as a clean habitat condition with a high proportion of sensitive species, abundant dissolved oxygen, and little pollutants. As a results of the ecosystem structure, the ecological health condition metrics and appearance of endangered species showed large score deviation, but it was analyzed that the stream ecosystem health was generally excellent. There was a slight correlation between the habitat environment and the results of the nature habitat evaluation according to the appearance of the B. lenok tsinlingensis.
