  • Background Untreated lymphedema of an extremity leads to an increase in volume. The therapy of this condition can be conservative or surgical. Methods "Lymphological liposculpture" is a two-part procedure consisting of resection and conservative follow-up treatment to achieve curative volume adjustment of the extremities in secondary lymphedema. This treatment significantly reduces the need for complex decongestive therapy (CDT). From 2005 to 2020, 3,184 patients with secondary lymphedema after breast cancer and gynecological tumors were treated in our practice and clinic. "Lymphological liposculpture" was applied to 65 patients, and the data were recorded and evaluated by means of perometry and questionnaires. Results The alignment of the sick to the healthy side was achieved in all patients. In 58.42% (n = 38), the CDT treatment could be completely stopped postoperatively; in another 33.82% (n = 22) of the patients, a permanent reduction of the CDT was achieved. In 7.69% (n = 5) patients, the postoperative CDT could not be reduced. A total of 92.30% (n = 60) of the patients described a lasting significant improvement in their quality of life. Conclusion "Lymphological liposculpture" is a standardized curative sustainable procedure for secondary lymphedema for volume adjustment of the extremities and reduction of postoperative CDT with eminent improvement of the quality of life.

  • In this study, development of M2-Dephanox and M3-Dephanox process has been tried to enhance the nitrogen removal of M-Dephanox process on the basis of previous study about M-Dephanox. The results showed that T-N removal efficiency of M3-Dephanox process was 8.9% or 11.3% higher than M-Dephanox or M2-Dephanox processes, respectively. This result is due to the lower $NO_3{^-}-N$ concentration in the effluent of M3-Dephanox than of M-Dephanox and M2-Dephanox processes. This results were recurrenced by PASS simulator. As result of simulation by PASS program, effluent $NO_3{^-}-N$ concentration of M3-Dephanox process was 1.4 mg/L and 3.6 mg/L lower than M-Dephanox and M2-Dephanox processes. In the study about optimization of M3-Dephanox processes by PASS program, SRT greatly affected T-N removal of M3-Dephanox process, whereas, the recycle rate and recirculation rate did little affect T-N removal efficiency of M3-Dephanox. In the study about optimization of reactors following the nitrification reactor of M3-Dephanox process, it was shown that the best optimum volume ratio of denitrification reactor, intermittently aerated reactor and anoxic reactor for the T-N removal were 29.1(%) : 32.7(%) : 38.2(%). T-N removal efficiency at this volume ratio was similar to T-N removal efficiency at the volume ratio of 36.3(%) : 36.3(%) : 27.4(%) designed for the lab-scale M3-Dephanox.

  • This study was performed to compare the effects of rice straw and towage sludge cake as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction, porosity, C/N ratio, salinity, and conductivity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to rice straw in reactor control, RS-1, RS-2, RS-3 and RS-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Weight ratios of food wastes to sewage sludge rake in reactor control, SL-1, SL-2, SL-3 and SL-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The values of pH of food waters, rice straw and sewage sludge cake were 4.39, 7.40 and 5.79, respectively. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to rice straw resulted in the high reaction temperature and the fast weight and volume reduction rates. The lowering of the weight ratio of food wastes to sewage sludge cake resulted in the slow weight and volume reduction rates. C/N ratio in control was larger than that in rice straw containing reactors, and that in rice straw containing reactors was larger than that in sewage sludge cake containing reactors. Salinity and conductivity in reactors were condensed and increased by reaction days.

  • To construct the system controlling the aeration volume for D wastewater treatment plant effectively, the fluctuation of aeration volume was analyzed with changes of factors of the influent. As a result, the range of aeration volume was wide to maintain the certain concentration of DO, and the key factor to decide the aeration volume was found to be the temperature, F/M ratio, the loading rate of $BOD_5$ and T-N of the influent. Among the factors, the temperature of the influent had the most decisive effect on the aeration volume. The result showed that $45.8m^3/h$ of the aeration volume was needed with an increase of $1^{\circ}C$ of the influent, and the effect of the season was considered. Since the temperature of the influent is affected by a change of season, same as F/M ratio, the loading rate of the influent and the concentration of MLSS, it seemed that the change of the temperature of the influent affects the aeration volume even more. Therefore, it is preferable to consider the loading rate of the influent and F/M ratio altogether, rather than considering only one factor when deciding aeration volume.

  • We examined the perception of volume in college students with a normal weight versus those students with obesity. College students were divided into a normal weight group (<23 body mass index, n=121) and an obese group (${\geq}23$ body mass index, n=110), The perception of volume was measured under different beverage colors (colorless, black, yellow, and blue) and cup colors (colorless, black, yellow, and blue) containing the same amount of liquid (150 ml). We found that the normal weight group perceived significantly more liquid in a cup with a blue beverage versus a colorless one. The obese group perceived significantly more liquid in a cup with a yellow or blue beverage versus a colorless one. In terms of cup color, the normal weight group perceived significantly more liquid in a black color cup compared to a blue color cup. However, there were no differences in perceived volume according to the color of cup among the obese group. There were no significant differences in the perceived volume between the normal and obese group under all conditions tested. In conclusion, beverage and cup color effects volume perception in normal weight students, while only beverage color effects volume perception in obese students. Therefore, controlling, the color of beverages and cups may help to control the consumption of drinks.

  • Purpose The prominent mandible angle, otherwise known as "square face", has been recognized as an aesthetic problem that needs correction by many in the Asian community. Many surgeons considered that mandible angle ostectomy alone, brings about hypotrophy of the masseter muscle. However, it was only proven indirectly (by clinical experience and histological animal experiments) and not objectively. In this study, we evaluated the volume of masseter muscle to prove the effect, objectively. Materials and method Computed tomography (CT) images were used to measure the masseter muscle volume of normal female group (n=6), and of female patient group n=8, preoperative and early & late postoperative volumes) presenting the symptom of prominent mandible angle. The data was analyzed statistically by two-sample t-test and paired t-test using SAS (version 8.2). Results In normal female group, volume average was $16,142{\pm}2,829.8mm^3$. In patient group, preoperative volume averaged $24,447{\pm}4,544.5mm^3$ (p<0.0001), early postoperative volume measured average of $31,966{\pm}50,421mm^3$ which is a 30% increase from the preoperative volume (p<0.0001). Late postoperative measurement was $20,202{\pm}4,092.3mm^3$, which is a 20% decrease from the preoperative volume (p<0.0006). Conclusion The bone reduction of prominent mandible angle induce the hypotrophic effect of masseter muscle after long term follow up (5 more months). This result mean that the result of mandible angle contouring surgery can be considered as combined effect of bony angle reduction and subsequent masseter muscle hypotrophy.

  • In this paper, we visualized 3-dimensional volume of heart using volume method by thresholding in EBT slices data. Volume rendering is the method that acquire the color by casting a pixel ray to volume data. The gray level of heart region is so high that we decide heart region by thresholding method. When a pixel ray is cast to volume data, the region that is higher than threshold value becomes heart region. We effectively rendered the heart volume and showed the 3-dimensional heart volume.

  • In this study, the production of proper emulsion fuel and the evaluation of its rheological stability in various experimental conditions were carried out. The W/O (water-in-oil) emulsion fuel was made using n-decane, pure water, and Span 80 was used as a surfactant. Increments of water volume ratio and fuel temperature were the factors, which boosted the phase separation of the emulsion fuel. Rheological characteristics for different water/oil volume ratio, temperature, and elapsed time after the fuel production were examined. As the water volume ratio in the fuel increased, the behavior of non-Newtonian fluid was observed. Viscosity declined as the fuel temperature increased due to the cohesion of water droplets in the fuel. The effect of elapsed time on viscosity was not severe for lower water ratio. However, gradual decrease of viscosity 3 hours after fuel production, in the case of ratio of 3:7, was clearly observed.
