  • This study investigated the effects of music and actor evaluation on musical watching intention by performing a survey on 187 undergraduate and graduate students in Korea and China. Controlling respondents' gender, major, interests on arts, annual number of musicals attended and musical participation motivation grouped by music and actor, we found three things. First, a high evaluation of music and actor leads to high watching intention. Second, when a person is motivated by music, high evaluation on music increases the watching intention, but this is not the case for the actor. Third, Chinese people do not show any interaction effects of watching motivation between musical evaluation and watching intention. In conclusion, people are found to have a greater musical watching intention when they are motivated by music and evaluate high on music, rather than when they are motivated by the actor and evaluate high on actor. Also, the differential effects of evaluation on the musical do not exist in China, where a different musical participation culture prevails.

  • This paper proposes a sketch drawing system called m-shaper for musical shape generation. Through simple sketch drawing, users can generate musical shape configuration which can be played by a computer. One key ingredient of the process is a unique concept for the interactive musical shape generation that combines shape and sound based on the designers' manual inputs. m-shaper captures the numerical values of drawing characteristics and determines how the musical notes and shapes can be generated. Using a tablet, four sketch movements are captured such as pressure, tilt, rotation and speed. Each point of a shape corresponds to a certain musical note that represents a type of instrument, duration, pitch, and octave. The current m-shaper has been developed as a computational tool for supporting the schematic design process. Designers in m-shaper draw geometric sketches with a musical inspiration and explore possible conceptual forms. They also can control the parameters for results and transform their sketch drawing.

  • I attempted to study the resolution of how I can show the essence of an original musical production to audience, the possibilities of how recreate impossible elements according to Korean musical environment because of cultural and linguistic differences, and verify the meaning of adjusting an original production to Korean one through directorial approaches to licensed musical production. I mainly exemplified 2009 Korean production (Charlotte Theatre, March ~ August, 2009) that I directed. The purpose that I wanted to analyze the case of Korean production mainly is able to prove a wide variety of possible challenges rather than simply licensed ones because the former was recreated in 30 years after the first original production. Recreation and coaching to acting through fine and precise analysis of an original production, Koreanizing Western culture of the licensed musical, resolving the problem of linguistic nuances are the important ways to direct licensed musical. For licensed musical director, cooperation with original creative team and Korean production company must be the most important job.

To this end, the 'Live TALK' chat during the 'ontact' (online contact) performance of the musical Marie Curie was observed in real-time and subsequently analyzed in terms of the characteristics of online cultural intermediaries: their owned capital, their mediating language, and their relationship with the consumers. As a result of the analysis, musical enthusiasts were found to possess a wealth of cultural capital based on practical experience and inquiry, and to be utilizing specific identifying expressions in their language use. In addition, they appeared to be interactive in their communication with the general audience, which could be seen in the flow of spontaneous conversations as well as questions and answers occurring in the live chat. This study is significant in confirming that musical enthusiasts are positioning themselves as new cultural intermediaries through their cultural practices: taking on the role of guides and mediators in the online space 'Live TALK.'
