  • I review research on self-sensing and structural optimizations of laminated carbon/epoxy composites in Japan. Self-sensing is one of the multiple functions of composites; i.e., carbon fiber is used as a sensor as well as reinforcement. I present a controversial issue in self-sensing and detail research results. Structural optimization of laminated CFRP composites is indispensable in reducing the weights of modern aerospace structural components. I present a modified efficient global search method using the multi-objective genetic algorithm and fractal branch and bound method. My group has focused its research on these subjects and our research results are presented here.

  • The accuracy of CCD observations obtained at the Korean 1.8m telescope has been studied. Seventeen comparison stars in the vicinity of the cataclysmic variable BG CMi have been measured. The 'artificial' star has been used instead of the 'control' star, what made possible to increase accuracy estimates by a factor of 1.3-2.1 times for 'good' and 'cloudy' nights, respectively. The algorithm of iterative determination of accuracy and weights of few comparison stars contributing to the artificial star, has been presented. The accuracy estimates for 13-mag stars are around $0.^m002$ mag for exposure times of 30 sec.

  • A geometric non-linear finite element formulation of spatial ocean cable under currents is presented using multiple noded curved cable elements. Tangent stiffness and mass matrices for the isoparametric cable ele¬ment are derived and the initial equilibrium state of ocean cable subjected to self-weights, buoyancy, and current as well as support motions is determined using the load incremental method. Free vibration analysis of ocean cables is performed based on the initial equilibrium configuration. Numerical examples are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the present finite element method and investigate dynamic characteristics of ocean cables.

  • The AHP methodology compares criteria, or alternatives with respect to a criterion, in a natural, pairwise mode. AHP has been applied in a wide variety of applications multi objective decision making being just one. If a group of expert with different aspect, they need some way to revise expert group. We proposed the concatenation of expert to survey the AHP pairwise question for multi-attribute decision making. In this paper, we suggest a way to revise the expert's priorities in hierarch using concept of different group opinion.

  • The purpose of this study was twofold: One was to investigate the structural relationships among communication with father and mother, ego-identity, and school adjustment. The other was to test the structural equivalence among researched variables between middle and high school samples. The subjects were 419 sophomores of middle and high schools. The major findings were as follows. 1) Communication with the father had direct and indirect effects on adolescents' school adjustment, while communication with the mother had only an indirect effect on school adjustment. 2) Ego-identity had a direct effect on school adjustment, and mediated the effects of communication with father and mother in school adjustment. 3) Multiple-group analysis revealed that middle and high school groups had the same structural relationships, but had different regression weights.

  • In the IEEE 802.1 Ib, DCF provides contention based services and PCF provides contention free services for QoS suppof. DCF uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/collision Avoidance) as an access protocol. In this paper, an enhanced PCF, which gives weights to channels with heavy traffic load, was proposed. The weight is depending on the partial queue length information from STAs. NS-2 simulation results show that the proposed scheme is an promising approach for enhancing the PCF.

  • An adaptive beamforming system based on code filtering and differential correlation approaches is proposed. The differential correlation method was originally proposed for time delay estimation of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems under near-far ratio conditions and the code filtering correlation algorithm, on the other hand, was proposed for array response estimation in DS-CDMA systems under perfect power control. In this paper, by combining differential correlation concept with the code filtering beamforming technology, an accurate estimate of the beam forming weights and an enhanced performance of DS-CDMA systems under sever near-far ratio conditions is achieved. The system performance in terms of beam pattern and bit-error-rate (HER) shows that the proposed adaptive beamformer outperforms the conventional code filtering correlation technique.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the leisure and social support types which affect elderly depression. The study sample comprised 275 cases, and the analysis was performed by t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression and stepwise regression on SPSS ver. 10.0. The following three principle results were obtained: First, the types of leisure and social support differed according to domographic profiles. Second, among 6 sub-factors of leisure type, sports and viewing impressions activities contributed positively to elderly depression, as did emotional and appraisement supports among 4 sub-factors of social support. Third, stepwise regression analysis, conducted to determine the effect weights of factors of leisure types and social supports, showed that emotional support, social relationships activity, and viewing impressions activity strongly affected elderly depression in the order listed. Based of these results, the study suggested methods for developing an active leisure activities program which is necessary to minimize elderly depression.

  • In this paper, a Kalman filter approach for enhancing speech signals degraded by statistically independent additive nonstationary noise is developed. The autoregressive hidden markov model is used for modeling the statistical characteristics of both the clean speech signal and the nonstationary noise process. In this case, the speech enhancement comprises a weighted sum of conditional mean estimators for the composite states of the models for the speech and noise, where the weights equal to the posterior probabilities of the composite states, given the noisy speech. The conditional mean estimators use a smoothing spproach based on two Kalmean filters with Markovian switching coefficients, where one of the filters propagates in the forward-time direction with one frame. The proposed method is tested against the noisy speech signals degraded by Gaussian colored noise or nonstationary noise at various input signal-to-noise ratios. An app개ximate improvement of 4.7-5.2 dB is SNR is achieved at input SNR 10 and 15 dB. Also, in a comparison of conventional and the proposed methods, an improvement of the about 0.3 dB in SNR is obtained with our proposed method.

  • In this paper, we present the entropy and similarity measure for generalized hesitant fuzzy information, and discuss their desirable properties. Some measure formulas are developed, and the relationships among them are investigated. We show that the similarity measure and entropy for generalized hesitant fuzzy information can be transformed by each other based on their axiomatic definitions. Furthermore, an approach of multiple attribute decision making problems where attribute weights are unknown and the evaluation values of attributes for each alternative are given in the form of GHFEs is investigated.
