  • Scanning electron microscopy combined with thermal ionization mass spectrometry (SEM-TIMS) was used to determine the precise isotope ratios of ultra-trace levels of uranium contained in individual microparticles. An advanced multiple ion counter system consisting of three secondary ion multipliers and two compact discrete dynodes was used for complete simultaneous ion detection. For verification purposes, using TIMS with complete simultaneous measurement, isotopes were analyzed in 5 pg of uranium of a certified reference material. A microprobe in the SEM was used to transfer individual particles from a NUSIMEP-7 sample to TIMS filaments, which were then subjected to SEM-TIMS and complete simultaneous measurement. The excellent agreement in the resulting uranium isotope ratios with the certified NUSIMEP-7 values shows the validity of SEM-TIMS with complete simultaneous measurement for the analysis of uranium isotopes in individual particles. Further experimental study required for investigation of simultaneous measurement using the advanced multiple ion counter system is presented.

  • This paper introduces DICE, a Domain-Independent text Classification Engine. DICE is robust, efficient, and domain-independent in terms of software and architecture. Each module of the system is clearly modularized and encapsulated for extensibility. The clear modular architecture allows for simple and continuous verification and facilitates changes in multiple cycles, even after its major development period is complete. Those who want to make use of DICE can easily implement their ideas on this test bed and optimize it for a particular domain by simply adjusting the configuration file. Unlike other publically available tool kits or development environments targeted at general purpose classification models, DICE specializes in text classification with a number of useful functions specific to it. This paper focuses on the ways to locate the optimal states of a practical text classification framework by using various adaptation methods provided by the system such as feature selection, lemmatization, and classification models.

  • We consider the challenges of finding good puncturing patterns for rate-compatible low-density parity-check code (LDPC) codes over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Puncturing is a scheme to obtain a series of higher rate codes from a lower rate mother code. It is widely used in channel coding but it causes performance is lost compared to non-punctured LDPC codes at the same rate. Previous work, considered the role of survived check nodes in puncturing patterns. Limitations, such as single survived check node assumption and simulation-based verification, were examined. This paper analyzes the performance according to the role of multiple survived check nodes and multiple dead check nodes. Based on these analyses, we propose new algorithm to find a good puncturing pattern for LDPC codes over AWGN channels.

  • In this paper, we present a formal method for modeling and checking an enhanced version of the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance protocol related to the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer, which has been proposed as the standard protocol for wireless local area networks. We deal mainly with the distributed coordination function (DCF) procedure of this protocol throughout a sequence of transformation steps. First, we use the unified modeling language state machines to thoroughly capture the behavior of wireless stations implementing a DCF, and then translate them into the input language of the UPPAAL model checking tool, which is a network of communicating timed automata. Finally, we proceed by checking of some of the safety and liveness properties, such as deadlock-freedom, using this tool.

  • A graphic processing unit (GPU) can perform the same calculation on multiple data (SIMD: single instruction multiple data) using hundreds of to thousands of special purpose processors for graphic processing. Thus, high efficiency is expected when GPU is used for the generation and correlation of satellite navigation signals, which perform generation and processing by applying the same calculation procedure to tens of millions of discrete signal samples per second. In this study, the structure of a GPU-based GNSS simulator for the generation and processing of satellite navigation signals was designed, developed, and verified. To verify the developed satellite navigation signal generator, generated signals were applied to the OEM-V3 receiver of Novatel Inc., and the measured values were examined. To verify the satellite navigation signal processor, the performance was examined by collecting and processing actual GNSS intermediate frequency signals. The results of the verification indicated that satellite navigation signals could be generated and processed in real time using two GPUs.

  • This study proposes a new efficient MAC(media access control) protocol to establish the ultrasonic communication network for under water vehicles, which ensures a certain level of maximum throughput regardless of the propagation delay of ultrasonic and allows fast data transmission through the multiple ultrasonic communication channel. In this study, a media access control protocol for underwater communication network that allows 'peer-to-peer' communication between a surface ship and multiple underwater system is designed, and the proposed control protocol is implementde for its verification.

  • We propose an Opto-Digital hybrid fingerprint Identification system based on the binary phase extraction joint transform correlator(BPEJTC) for validation and security yerification. It is shown that since the BPEJTC provides higher peak-to-sidelobe ratio than that of the conventional JTC and does not cause correlation peaks due to intra-class association, this system is well-adaptive to the multiple object environments. Experimental results show that this system has a good performance in the presence of multiple images and the variations of the same person.

  • In this paper, a fire detection system based on quantitative risk estimation is presented. Multiple sensors are used to build a comprehensive indicator that represents the risk of fire quantitatively. The proposed fire risk estimation method consists of two stages which determines the occurrence of fire and estimates the toxicity of the surveillance area. In the first stage, fire is reliably detected under diverse fire scenarios. The risk of fire is estimated in the second stage. Applying Purser's Fractional Effective Dose (FED) model which quantitates harmfulness of toxic gases, the risk of the surveillance area and evacuation time are calculated. A fire experiment conducted using four different types of combustion materials for the verification of the system resulted in a maximum error rate of 12.5%. By using FED calculation and risk estimation methods, the proposed system can detect various signs of fire faster than conventional systems.

  • In this paper, statistical approach to prediction of A-weighted noise level in ship cabins. based on multiple linear regression analysis, is conducted. The best regression formula is composed of seven parameters of the deadweight, the type of ship, the location of engines and cabins, the type of deckhouse and the propeller skew angle. Verification work was carried out with other 210 cabins' data in 6 ships. As a result, the formula ensures the accuracy of 3 dB(A) in 77 % of cases.
