Conservative Visibility Preprocessing by Expressing 4-D visibility Information on 2-D Spaces (2차원 평면상에 4차원 가시성 정보의 표현을 통한 포괄적 가시성 전처리)

  • Visibility preprocessing is a useful method to reduce the complexity of scenes to be processed in real-time, and so enhances the overall rendering performance for interactive visualization of virtual environments. In this paper, we propose an efficient visibility preprocessing method. In the proposed method, we assume that navigatable areas in virtual environments are partitioned into rectangular parallelpiped cells or sub-worlds. To preprocess the visibility of each polygon for a given partitioned cell, we should determine at least the area-to-area visibility. This is inherently a four-dimensional problem. We efficiently express four-dimensional visibility information on two-dimensional spaces and keep it within a ternary tree, which is conceptually similar to a BSP(Binary Space Partitioning) tree, by exploiting the characteristics of conservative visibility. The proposed method is able to efficiently handle more general environments like urban scenes, and remove invisible polygons jointly blocked by multiple occluders. The proposed method requires O(nm) time and O(n+m) space. By selecting a suitable value for m, users can select a suitable level of trade-off between the preprocessing time and the quality of the computational result.

  • The fatigue happening during the road riding of the vehicle and for the moment the aircraft lands on the runway is closely related to the life cycle of the landing gear, the airframe, the vehicle's suspension, etc. The multiple loads acting on the wheel are longitudinal, lateral, vertical, and braking forces. To study the dynamic characteristics and fatigue stiffness of the vehicle, the dynamic fatigue simulator generally has been used to represent the real road vibration in the lab. It can save time and cost. In hardware, the critical factor in the hydraulic fatigue simulator structure is to decouple each axis and to endure several load vibration. In this paper, the inverse kinematic analysis method derives the magnitude of movement of the hydraulic servo actuator by the coupling after rendering the maximum movement displacement in the axial direction at the center of the dummy wheel. The result of the analysis is that the coupling between the axes is weak to reproduce the real road vibrations precisely.

A Surface Reconstruction Method from Contours Based on Dividing Virtual Belt (가상벨트 분할에 기반한 등고선으로부터의 표면재구성 방법)

  • This paper addresses a new technique for constructing surface model from a set of wire-frame contours. The most difficult problem of this technique, called contour triangulation, arises when there are many branches on the surface, and causes lots of ambiguities in surface definition process. In this paper, the branching problem is reduced as the surface reconstruction from a set of virtual belts and virtual canyons. To tile the virtual belts, a divide-and-conquer strategy based tiling technique, called the BPA algorithm, is adopted. The virtual canyons are covered naturally by an iterative convex removal algorithm with addition of a center vertex for each branching surface. Compared with most of the previous works reducing the multiple branching problem into a set of tiling problems between contours, our method can handle the problem more easily by transforming it into more simple topology, the virtual belt and the virtual canyon. Furthermore, the proposed method does not involve any set of complicated criteria, and provides a simple and robust algorithm for surface triangulation. The result shows that our method works well even though there are many complicated branches in the object.

  • The use of Operating System(OS) virtualization is increasing as it provides many useful features such as efficient use of hardware(HW), easy system migration, and isolation between virtual spaces which prevents errors effecting each other. Recent development in HW has made it possible to use OS virtualization in embedded systems. However, implementing OS virtualization means that a multiple number of schedulers are layered in a system, rendering it difficult to analyze the schedulability of the system and errors are easily produced. Errors in safety critical embedded systems can cause serious damage to life and property; thus, the hierarchical schedulability must be verified. In this paper, we propose a framework which supports formal modeling and verification of hierarchical scheduling systems with UPPAAL.

On the complexity of earthquake sequences: a historical seismology perspective based on the L'Aquila seismicity (Abruzzo, Central Italy), 1315-1915

  • Most damaging earthquakes come as complex sequences characterized by strong aftershocks, sometimes by foreshocks and often by multiple mainshocks. Complex earthquake sequences have enormous seismic hazard, engineering and societal implications as their impact on buildings and infrastructures may be much more severe at the end of the sequence than just after the mainshock. In this paper we examine whether historical sources can help characterizing the rare earthquake sequences of pre-instrumental times in full, including fore-, main- and aftershocks. Thanks to the its huge documentary heritage, Italy relies on one of the richest parametric earthquake catalogues worldwide. Unfortunately most current methods for assessing seismic hazard require that earthquake catalogues be declustered by removing all shocks that bear some dependency with those identified as mainshocks. We maintain that this requirement has led most modern historical seismologists to focus mainly on mainshocks rather than also on the fore- and aftershocks. To shed light onto major earthquake sequences of the past, rather than onto individual mainshocks, we investigated 10 damaging earthquake sequences ($M_w$ 4.7-7.0) that hit the L'Aquila area and central Abruzzo from the 14th to the 20th century. We find that most of the results of historical research are important for modern seismology, yet their rendering by the current parametric catalogues causes most information to be lost or not easily transferred to the potential users. For this reason we advocate a change in current strategies and the creation of a more flexible standard for storing and using all the information made available by historical seismology.

  • Recently commercial mixed-reality devices have be launched and a variety of mixed-reality content has produced, but narrow field of view, which appear to be hardware technical limitations, are mentioned as an important issue for hindering immersion and limiting the scope of use. We propose a new innovative system that cooperate multiple beam projectors and a number of mixed reality devices. Using this technology, users can maximize immersion and minimize frustration of narrow viewing angles through 3D object rendering on background of large 2D screens. This system, named BtS (Beyond the Sight), is implemented on a client-server basis and includes the ability to calibrate between devices, share spatial coordinate systems, and synchronize real-time renderings as core modules. In this paper, each configuration module is described in detail and the possibility of its performance and application is shown through the introduction of mixed reality content case created using BtS system.

Effect of Product Involvement and Brand Preference on Consumers' Evaluation Effort for Multi-Dimensional Prices (소비자의 다차원가격 평가노력에 대한 제품관여도와 브랜드선호도의 영향)

  • Purpose - Multi-dimensional prices comprise multiple components such as monthly payments and a number of payments rather than a single lump-sum amount. According to previous studies, an increase in the number of price dimensions leads to a massive amount of cognitive stress resulting in incorrect calculation, and deterioration in the consistency of the price judgment. However, an increase only in the level of complexity of calculating multi-dimensional prices does not always result in a corresponding decrease in the accuracy of price evaluation. Since diverse variables could affect consumers' purchase-decision-making process, the results of price evaluation would be different. In this study, an empirical analysis was performed to determine how the accuracy of price evaluation varies depending on the extent of the complexity of price dimensions using product involvement and brand preference as moderating variables. Research design, data, and methodology - A survey was conducted on 260 students, and 252 effective responses were used for analysis. The data was analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and two-way ANOVA. In this study, six hypotheses were developed to examine the effect of product involvement and brand preference on consumers' evaluation effort of multi-dimensional prices. Results - As the number of price dimensions increased, accuracy of price evaluation appeared to be low in high involvement, as expected. However, it showed no differences in price evaluation effort when the level of complexity of calculating multi-dimensional prices is low. When a small number of price dimensions are presented in both cases of high and low involvement, accuracy of price evaluation is much higher in a weak brand preference. On the contrary, a strong brand preference enhances an accuracy of price evaluation only in case of low involvement when the number of price dimensions is increased. An interaction effect of product involvement and brand preference on consumers' evaluation of multi-dimensional prices did not exist irrespective of the level of complexity of calculating prices being high or low. Conclusions - When the number of price dimensions is small, consumers' effort for price evaluation shows almost no difference without the moderating effect of involvement, and a weak brand preference leads to a higher accuracy of price evaluation in an effort to make the best selection. No interaction effect of product involvement and brand preference was found except for a main effect of brand preference. When a price is composed of multiple dimensions rendering it more difficult to calculate the final price, the effort for price evaluation was expected to decrease only slightly in case of combination of high involvement and strong brand preference. This is because people have a higher purchase intentions and trust for that particular brand. However, the accuracy of price evaluation was much lower in cases of high involvement, and there was no interaction effect between product involvement and brand preference except for a main effect of involvement and brand preference, respectively.

Design and Implementation of IP Video Wall System for Large-scale Video Monitoring in Smart City Environments (스마트 시티 환경에서 대규모 영상 모니터링을 위한 IP 비디오 월 시스템의 설계 및 구현)

  • Unlike a typical video wall system, video wall systems used for integrated monitoring in smart city environments should be able to display various videos, images, and texts simultaneously. In this paper, we propose an Internet Protocol (IP)-based video wall system that has no limit on the number of videos that can be monitored simultaneously, and that can arrange the monitor screen layout without restrictions. The proposed system is composed of multiple display servers, a wall controller, and video source providers, and they communicate with each other through an IP network. Since the display server receives and decodes the video stream directly from the video source devices, and displays it on the attached monitor screens, more videos can be simultaneously displayed on the entire video wall. When one video is displayed over several screens attached to multiple display servers, only one display server receives the video stream and transmits it to the other display servers by using IP multicast communications, thereby reducing the network load and synchronizing the video frames. Experiments show that as the number of videos increases, a system consisting of more display servers shows better decoding and rendering performance, and there is no performance degradation, even if the display server continues to be expanded.

  • In this paper, we proposes the virtual sound source panning algorithm in the multichannel system. Recently, High-definition (HD) and Ultrahigh-definition (UHD) video formats are accepted for the multimedia applications and they provide the high-quality resolution pixels and the wider view angle. The audio format also needs to generate the wider sound field and more immersive sound effects. However, the conventional stereo system cannot satisfy the desired sound quality in the latest multimedia system. Therefore, the various multichannel systems that can make more improved sound field generation are proposed. In the mutichannel system, the conventional panning algorithms have acoustic problems about directivity and timbre of the virtual sound source. To solve these problems in the arbitrary positioned multichannel loudspeaker system, we proposed the virtual sound source panning algorithm using multiple vectors base nonnegative amplitude panning gains. The proposed algorithm can be easily controlled by the gain control function to generate an accurate localization of the virtual sound source and also it is available for the both symmetric and asymmetric loudspeakers format. Its performance of sound localization is evaluated by subjective tests comparing with conventional amplitude panning algorithms, e.g. VBAP and MDAP, in the symmetric and asymmetric formats.

Nutritional Quality and Variation of Meat and Bone Meal

  • Meat and bone meal is a valuable protein and mineral source in diets of production animals and contributes to the protein, energy and mineral component of diets. The aim of the present study was to more accurately characterise the apparent ileal amino acid digestibility of meat and bone meals produced in New Zealand and evaluate routine in vitro assays used in practise to measure meat and bone meal quality. A total of 94 commercial meat and bone meals from 25 New Zealand rendering plants over a two and a half year period were analysed for proximates, gross energy, gross amino acid content (incl. hydroxyproline, hydroxylysine and lanthionine), apparent ileal amino acid digestibility, pepsin nitrogen digestibility, protein solubility and bone content. The mean crude protein content of the 94 meat and bone meal samples was 56.8% with a range of >35% units and a coefficient of variation of 9.8%. The mean crude fat and ash content were 10.0 and 28.4% respectively. These latter components showed a large range (16 and 43%, respectively) with coefficients of variation above 22%. Amino acid digestibility between samples was highly variable with lysine and sulphur amino acids digestibility ranging between 45.8-89.0 and 38.2-85.5%, respectively. Pearson correlation coefficients are presented between crude protein content and individual gross amino acids, crude protein content and individual digestible amino acid content, and pepsin N digestibility and individual digestible amino acid content. There was a significant relationship between the digestible amino acid nitrogen content and the crude protein content while pepsin nitrogen digestibility was not correlated to ileal amino acid nitrogen digestibility (r=-0.06). Meat meals with a high protein content had relatively low hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine levels something that was attributed to the levels of collagen from bone. The data indicated that lanthionine (formed upon heat treatment of cysteine with a hydroprotein) is not a good indicator of the heat treatment employed to meat and bone meals. Step-wise multiple regression equations to predict the apparent digestible content of amino acids from rapid in vitro assays are presented. The most selected variables included ash and crude fat content. In general the equations derived for the essential amino acids had a higher degrees of fit (R2) compared to the non-essential amino acids. The R2 for the essential amino acids ranged from 0.43 for histidine and 0.68 for leucine. These equations provide a means of more rapidly estimating the apparent ileal digestible amino acid content (protein quality) of meat and bone meal using standard analyses.
