To transmit multimedia information efficiently and use it in realtime, it needs a private multimedia terminal for service type. But multimedia information terminal was developped for of offered service type in case by case. Accordingly, general multimedia terminal have not been developed yet. Multimedia database structure and standard communication protocol must be designed first to develop the general multimedia terminal. Multimedia database structure needs to store the various multimedia information consistently and, standard communication protocol access the database transparently. In this paper, we design a multimedia database structure and communication protocol that are able to access the multimedia information on distributed database servers in the network.

The tendency of multimedia services and market of specialized information is currently much debated issur in our country. Nevertheless, the systematic investigation of demand for multimedea database is nowadays nowhere to be found. The purpose of this study is to gain a general overview of market and demand of service relating to multimedea database. At first, various definitions of multimedia, multimedia content, and multimedia database are analysed and evaluated from the point of technical and practical views. For the study on the demand for multimedia database of specialized information, database catalogue of DPCK 1997 and multimedia database on internet are analysed. After that the results of expert survey to estimate an accurate tendency of multimedia services in Korea are analysed.

In multimedia database system, it is very important issue how to query multimedia data and present the result of query. Also, in order to reuse the query result in other applications, multimedia database system must be considered to provide the query result which is more generalized form. In this paper, I propose a presentation model for presenting query result in multimedia database system and MMSQL based on the developed model for processing multimedia database query. This paper includes the design and implementation of MMSQL query processor. MMSQL query processor provides the presentation of query result which is SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) document. Therefore, MMSQL query result in this paper can be use to variant multimedia applications.

Test data for a naval vessel is massive, expensive and impossible to be retested in a underwater acoustic measurement on the same condition. So, it is very important. In this paper, I mention massive underwater acoustic multimedia database system that was developed to store a long time, manage systematically, supply raw data and analyze data to user in 2-tier structure. Also, I propose 3-tier structure to extend the current database system that can supply multimedia data.

With the advance of internet and computer processing technique, users can easily access and use the multimedia contents involving the various pictures, videos and audios information. And users request more convenient and accurate multimedia services. In these environments, it is difficulties to integrate and manage metadata standards because there are various standards in multimedia applications according to types of services and data formats individually. In this paper, we design and implement the multimedia metadata management system for integrating from heterogeneous sources. In our system, we managed heterogeneous metadata by integrating to unified schema using mapping table. Through proposed system, users can search multimedia data easily without considering variety of application services.

This paper describes and effective teaching approach to an undergraduate database course. This research draws on practical experience based on the hands-on practice approach which leads students to develop a database application utilizing various tools. Students not only learn concepts, methodologies and tools of database technology in class and through online multimedia learning aids, but also practice how to integrate them through collaborative team projects. The course employs collaborative learning approach and multimedia and internet technologies. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively on assignments and projects and to learn independently through online multimedia learning aids.

For constructing an intelligent multimedia database system for medical diagnosis, we are focusing on two technological points. One is a retrieval algorithm of databases, and the other is a coding algorithm of multimedia contents. For the first, previously we proposed a front-end database preprocessor called“keyword-network”, and in this paper we present its extended model providing an intelligent logical AND searching function especially for medical differential diagnosis. For the second, we present examples of multimedia intellectual coding methods for cardiovascular examination records.

Multimedia database system can be improve data transferring efficiency by consulting catalogue database which is storing the object and serving multimedia meta-database and perform the pre-scheduling for data transferring and by delaying of transferring to reduce the responding timeand reordering the data by various method of transferring. By Introducing these techniques we can enhance the server resources utilizing, minimizing the users responding time and can decrease failure at the scheduling itself and easily search and transfer the information that the user wanted. In this paper, we present the development of a system(WebPierrot) that helps end-users to generate home pages with the construction of their corresponding web databases without the web programming technique. It consists of a page editor. a database wizard and a database manager. The page editor creates and modifies multimedia home pages. The database wizard generates databases operated with home pages automatically, and the database manager maintains the database related to the home pages. The page editor has been made based on the DHTML(Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language) and lets users generate multimedia home pages interactively. The database manager creates, updates and manages web databases. The system has the advantage which end-users can create multimedia home pages containing databases without requiring web database programming.

As the multimedia application services have been getting various in Internet, need of multimedia database management system which can manage various multimedia information effectively has been increased. The multimedia application generally needs the features to store, manage, retrieve the multimedia data. We need a database management system framework that may be easily integrated with these features. This paper proposes th database management system framework providing the easy integration with various multimedia information retrieval. The framework uses OQL as the retrieval interface, so that user can use it easily. It can be integrated dynamically and easily with various multimedia retrieval method as a loosely coupled system. In addition there is no performance degradation caused in a loosely coupled system.
