An analysis of handling performance including the compliance effects is performed. Using the primitive design data of suspension systems, a kinematic model and the three kinds of compliance models are developed. The wheel alignments curves are obtained with the multibody dynamic analysis program ADAMS. The compliance effects of each model are discussed. Since the proposed analysis only requires the raw design data, the better prediction of wheel behaviors is possible in suspension design stage.

Dynamic analysis of a vehicle is carried out with rigid body and flexible body models. The chassis of the vehicle is treated as flexible body in the flexible body model, and vibration normal modes are considered to account for elastic deformation of the component. Using output from the modal analysis in the finite element program, input data for the dynamic analysis with flexible body is generated. To achieve the computational efficiency, SUPERELEMENT technique is used for the vehicle suspension subsisted. The computer simulation time with suspension superelement was much reduced due to the reduction of coordinates and no kinematic constraint in the system.

For the in-line three cylinder engine whose crankshaft has a phase of 120 degrees, the total sum of unbalanced inertia forces occurring in each cylinder will be counterbalanced among three cylinders. However, parts of inertia forces generated at the No.1 and No.3 cylinders will cause a primary moment about the No.2 cylinder. In order to eliminate this out-of-balance moment, a single balance shaft has been attached to the cylinder block so that the engine durability and riding comfort may be further improved. Accordingly, the forced vibration analysis of the in-line three cylinder engine must be implemented to meet the required targets at an early design stage. In this paper, a method to reduce noise and vibration in the 800cc, in-line three cylinder LPG engine is suggested using the multibody dynamic simulation. The static and dynamic balances of the in-line three cylinder engine are investigated analytically. The multibody dynamic model of the in-line three cylinder engine is developed where the inertia properties of connecting rod, crankshaft, and balance shaft are extracted from their FE-models. The combustion pressure within the No.1 cylinder in three significant operating conditions(1500rpm-full load, 4000rpm-full load and 7000rpm-no load)is measured from the actual tests to excite the engine. The vibration velocities at three engine mounts with and without balance shaft are evaluated through the forced vibration analysis. Obviously, it is shown that the vibration of the in-line three cylinder engine with balance shaft is reduced to the acceptable level .
The objective of this investigation is to develop a compliant track link model and apply this model to the multi-body dynamic analysis of high mobility tracked vehicles. Two major difficulties encountered in developing the compliant track models. The first one is that the integration step size must be kept small in order to maintain the numerical stability of the solution. This solution deals with high oscillatory signals resulting from the impulsive contact forces and stiff compliant elements to represent the joints between the track links. The second difficulty is due to the large number of the system equations of motion of the three dimensional multibody tracked vehicle model. This problem was sloved by decoupling the equations of motion of the chassis subsystem and the track subsystems. Recursive methods are used to obtain a minimum set of equations for the chassis subsystem. Several simulation scenarios were tested for the high mobility tracked vehicle including accelaeration, high speed cruising, braking, and turning motion in order to demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the methods proposed in this investigation.
Since the performance of the circuit breaker mainly depends on the spring operating mechanism, the analysis of the spring operating mechanism is required. The spring, especially closing spring, stores the deformation energy due to the compression and then accelerates the big loads rapidly in the circuit breaker. To accurately carry out the kinematic and dynamic analysis of the circuit breaker, the precise modeling of the spring behavior is necessary. In this paper, the static stiffness of the spring is captured by using the tester. When the spring is used in the circuit breaker, it is installed horizontally. Therefore, Sine excitation tests are carried out horizontal and vertical direction. Three types of spring models such as a linear spring model, modal spring model, and nodal spring model are suggested and compared with the experimental results.

In this study, dynamic analysis of a passenger car is carried out to analyze ride quality over a random road profile. The front suspension of the car is a MacPherson strut type and the rear suspension is a multi- link type. The following five different models are constructed and compared to see the effects of engine vibration and chassis flexibility in the ride quality. (1) one rigid chassis model, (2) a rigid chassis and rigid engine model, (3) a rigid engine and flexible chassis model with one vibration mode, (4) one flexible chassis model with six engine vibration modes and one chassis vibration mode, (5) one flexible chassis model with seven vibration modes and four static correction modes. The result shows that engine vibration modes and the first bending mode of the chassis are important in the ride quality.

In this study, we develop MPI-OpenMP hybrid parallelization for multibody peridynamic simulations. Peridynamics is suitable for analyzing complicated dynamic fractures and various discontinuities. However, compared with a conventional finite element method, nonlocal interactions in peridynamics cost more time and memory. In multibody peridynamic analysis, the costs increase due to the additional interactions that occur when computing the nonlocal contact and ghost interlayer models between adjacent bodies. The costs become excessive when further refinement and smaller time steps are required in cases of high-velocity impact fracturing or similar instances. Thus, high computational efficiency and performance can be achieved by parallelization and optimization of multibody peridynamic simulations. The analytical code is developed using an Intel Fortran MPI compiler and OpenMP in NURION of the KISTI HPC center and parallelized through MPI-OpenMP hybrid parallelization. Further parallelization is conducted by hybridizing with OpenMP threads in each MPI process. We also try to minimize communication operations by model-based decomposition of MPI processes. The numerical results for the impact fracturing of multiple bodies show that the computing performance improves significantly with MPI-OpenMP hybrid parallelization.

It is important to predict the collision behavior of a train consist to improve its crashworthiness. To analyze crash behavior of train, four kinds of methods are mainly used so far. The first is method using multibody dynamics to predict the gross motion of the train set. The second uses 3D FE model to apply the section analysis method in order. The third is used to deduce design specification and evaluate the crashworhiness of a train by using 1D model. The last is to constitute 2D model to check overriding and coupling devices. The train evaluation procedures are so complex that it is difficult to understand or deal with. In this study, VTM for railway train was introduced to simplify the procedures. VTM involves 3D models, 1D models and dynamic components such as suspension and coupling. The method using hybrid concept model makes it possible to do all the things that are mentioned above. To analyze crash behavior tendency of VTM, the model was simulated and the simulation results were discussed.

In an EMS (Electromagnetic suspension)-type Maglev (Magnetically-levitated) vehicle, the flexibility of the bogie frame may affect the acceleration of the electromagnet that is input into the control system, which could lead to instability in some cases. For this reason, it is desirable to consider bogie frame flexibility in air gap simulations, for the optimization of bogie structure. The objective of this paper is to develop a flexible multibody dynamic model of 1/2 of an EMS-type Maglev vehicle that is under testing, and to compare the air gap responses obtained from the rigid and the flexible body model. The feedback control system and electromagnet models that are unique to the EMS-type maglev vehicle must be included in the model. With this model, dynamics simulations are carried out to predict the air gap responses from the two models, of the rigid and flexible model, and the air gaps are compared. Such a comparative study could be useful in the prediction of the air gap in the design stage, and in designing an air gap control system.
