A great deal of time and effort are required to evaluate the safety and durability of a vehicle structure in the vehicle development stage. It is difficult to find the reasons for cracks which occur in the body and frame of a vehicle during tests. Recently computer aided engineering techniques have been utilized to solve the problems of safety and durability of vehicles. In this study, a dynamic stress analysis is performed on the frame of the vehicle by rigid and flexible multibody dynamics techniques. The result of the analysis is compared to that of the actual test. The full vehicle dynamic models for the rigid and flexible bodies are developed by DADS package. The modal coordinate system is used to save time for the dynamic stress analysis. The flexible multibody dynamic models have 12 normal modes considering the flexibility of the frame. Dynamic stresses arc calculated by relating the stress influence coefficients and the applied forces.

A very flexible beam can be used to model various types of continuous mechanical parts such as cables and wires. In this paper, the dynamic properties of a very flexible beam, included in a multibody system, are analyzed using absolute nodal coordinates formulation, which is based on finite element procedures, and the general continuum mechanics theory to represent the elastic forces. In order to consider the dynamic interaction between a continuous large deformable beam and a rigid multibody system, a combined system equations of motion is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. Using the derived system equation, a computation method for the dynamic stress during flexible multibody simulation is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and its reliability is verified by a commercial program NASTRAN. This method is significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics models can be unified into one numerical system. In addition, to analyze a multibody system including a very flexible beam, formulations for the sliding joint between a very deformable beam and a rigid body are derived using a non-generalized coordinate, which has no inertia or forces associated with it. In particular, a very flexible catenary cable on which a multibody system moves along its length is presented as a numerical example.

This paper presents an effective method to analyze the dynamic characteristics for the shilling transients of power transmission system using the multibody dynamics, which is composed of subsystem equation, subsystem assemble, and the self-determining technique for the system degree of freedom. Using the advantages of multibody dynamics, the proposed method can be used easily for mathematical models of mechanical systems, such as a power transmission, compared with newtonian method. With this theory, dynamic simulation program was developed. The program can be used to verify system performances, transient phenomena, and other dynamic problems. The simulation of a target system was presented, and its validity was attained by being compared with the previous analysis using newtonian method.

The dynamic characteristics of valve train are responsible for the dynamic performances of engine. We derived the equation of motion for 6 degrees of freedom model of the valve train. Computer model is also developed with flexible multibody model considering contact between components. The simulation results with these two models are compared with experimental results. We investigated the effect of the two spring models, TSDA (Translational Spring Damper Actuator) element and flexible body model, on the valve behavior and spring force. It is found that the dynamic behavior of the two models are not very different at normal operational velocity of the engine. By modeling contact between cam and tappet, the stress distributions of the cam were found. Using stress distribution obtained, contact width and contact stresses of the cam surface were calculated with Hertz contact theory.

In this analysis, a method is presented to calculate the critical speed of a railway vehicle by using a multibody dynamic model. The contact conditions and contact forces between the wheel and the rail are formularized for the wheelset model. This is combined with the bogie model to obtain a multibody dynamic model of a railway vehicle with constraint conditions. First-order linear dynamic equations with independent coordinates are derived from the constraint equations and dynamic equations of railway vehicles using the QR decomposition method. Critical speeds are calculated for the wheelset and bogie dynamic models through an eigenvalue analysis. The influences of the design parameters on the critical speed are presented.
The development and implementation of an appropriate methodology for the accurate geometric description of track models is proposed in the framework of multibody dynamics and it includes the representation of the track spatial geometry and its irregularities. The wheel and rail surfaces are parameterized to represent any wheel and rail profiles obtained from direct measurements or design requirements. A fully generic methodology to determine, online during the dynamic simulation, the coordinates of the contact points, even when the most general three dimensional motion of the wheelset with respect to the rails is proposed. This methodology is applied to study specific issues in railway dynamics such as the flange contact problem and lead and lag contact configurations. A formulation for the description of the normal contact forces, which result from the wheel-rail interaction, is also presented. The tangential creep forces and moments that develop in the wheel-rail contact area are evaluated using : Kalker linear theory ; Heuristic force method ; Polach formulation. The methodology is implemented in a general multibody code. The discussion is supported through the application of the methodology to the railway vehicle ML95, used by the Lisbon metro company.
Variable displacement swash plate piston pump analysis requires electric, hydraulics and dynamics which are similar to the one's incorporated in the complex fluid power and mechanical systems. The main variable capacity for the swash plate piston pumps, hydraulics or simple kinematic (swash plate degree, piston displacement) models are analyzed using AMESim, a multi-physics analysis program. AMESim is a multi-physics hydraulic analysis program that is considered good for the environment but not appropriate for environmental analysis for multibody dynamics. In this study, the analytical model of the swash plate type hydraulic piston pump variable capacity is modeled by combining the hydraulic part and the dynamic part through co-simulation of multibody dynamics program (Virtual.lab Motion) and multi-physics analysis (AMESim). This paper describes the whole modeling analysis method on the mechanical analysis of the multi-body dynamics program and how the hydraulic analysis in multi-physics analysis program works. This paper also presents a methodology for analyzing complex fluid power systems.

In this paper, dynamic track tension fur high mobility tracked vehicle is investigated by multibody dynamic simulation techniques. This research focuses on a heavy military tracked vehicle which has sophisticated suspension and rubber bushed rack systems. In order to obtain accurate dynamic track tension of track subsystems, each track link is modeled as a body which has six degrees of freedom. A compliant bushing element is used to connect track links. Various virtual proving ground models are developed to observe dynamic changes of the track tension. Numerical studies of the dynamic track tension are validated against the experimental measurements. The effects of pre-tensions, traction forces, fuming resistances, sprocket torques, ground profiles, and vehicle speeds, for dynamic responses of track tensions are explored, respectively.
A high-fidelity model of a tracked vehicle traversing a flexible ground terrain with a varying profile is presented here. In this work, we employed a recursive formulation to model the track subsystem. This method yields a minimal set of coordinates and hence, computationally more efficient than conventional approaches. Also, in the vehicle subsystem, the undercarriage frame is assumed to be connected to the chassis by a revolute joint and a spring-damper unit. This increase in system mobility makes the model more realistic. To capture the vehicle-ground interaction, a Winkler-type foundation with springs-dampers is used. Simulation runs of the integrated tracked vehicle system for vibrations for four varying ground profiles are provided.

The purpose of this paper is to develop methods for the dynamic analysis of multibody system that consist of interconnected rigid and deformable component. The equations of motion are derived by using the Lagrange's equation and finite element theory for the elastic mechanism systems. The type of equation of motion is the differential algebraic equation included kinematic nonlinear algebraic equation. The generalized coordinate partitioning method is used for solving this equation. To show the validity of this analysis solver, couple of models were canalized and those results were compared with the commercial package(ADAMS).
