An Experimental Study on the Growth Behavior of Multi-Surface-Cracks in Type 304 Stainless Steel at Elevated Temperature (고온하 304 스테인리스철의 표면규열의 성장거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The crack which is discovered in various structures and machine elements is multi-cracks. Multi-cracks may cause serious problems because they grow individually, and coalesce into one and it leads to fracture. Fatigue tests have been carried out to study the growth and coalescence behavior of multi-surface-cracks initiated at the semicircular surface notch in type 304 stainless steel at elevated temperature. The results are as follows; When multi-surface-cracks are lying on the surface of material, the major surface crack has greater influence on the fatigue life than the subcracks. The aspect ratio of multi-surface-cracks is lower than that of single crack because of the interaction and coalescence of surface cracks. Crack growth shape turns to semiellipse from the semicircle notch. After coalescence, the surface crack length increases rapidly, and it leads to fracture. Further, the slope transition of Paris law was found in the da/dN-$\Delta$K$_1$ plots.

  • The DCPD(Direct Current Potential Drop) method has been adopted for the crack measurement of a structure. The objective of this paper is to develop a multi-channel DCPD system not only for detecting crack depth, but also for determining the accurate shape of the surface crack. For this purpose, an exclusive software was also developed. In order to verify the developed DCPD system it was initially tested on a CT specimen, and subsequently was applied to a wide plate specimen. The developed multi-channel DCPD system was proven to provide an efficient and accurate measurement of a surface crack during the crack growth.

  • In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out to study the behavior of growth and coalescence of multi-surface cracks which were initiated at the semi-circular surface notches, and a simulation program was developed to predict their growth and coalescence behavior. By comparing the experimental result with those of the simulation based on SPC(surface point connection), ASME and BSI(British Standards Institution) conditions, we tried to enhance the reliance and integrity of structures. This shows that the simulation result has utility for fatigue life prediction.

  • The fatigue strength of SM55C has significantly decreased by 83% compared with atmosphere where distilled exists due to strong erosive action of acid fog. The reason is inferred in a way that strong acid erosive material such as acid fog act and give rise to multi-site crack on the surface. Several fatigue clacks occurred under the acid fog repeat the process of division and unification on the surface and form a long non-propagating crack throughout the circumference of experimented steel. However, in the depth, many parts do not show much trace of unification, and the depth is not as big as the one of normal crack shape. 10% of $CaCl_2$ causes strong erosive reaction to material. Then eventually make the life of fatigue shooter. On the other hand, 20% of $CaCl_2$ beings about oxidized material organic crack closing due to weak erosive reaction.

  • The multi-point procedure is developed to predict the shape change of a semi-elliptical surface crack during stable fatigue crack growth. 3-D stress intensity factors along a crack front are calculated using the simplified 3-D J-intergral. Crack growth rate coefficient in the Paris law is assumed to be constant along the crack growth. Crack growth rate is set to be the distance between the two parallel tangent lines on the two semi-elliptic crack fronts before and after crack growth.

  • A simulation program concerned with multi-surface fatigue cracks which initiated at the semi-circular surface notches has been developed to predict their growth and coalescence behaviors at the elevated temperature. Three kinds of coalescence models such as SPC(surface point connection), ASME and BSI(British Standards Institution) conditions were applied, and the results of the simulation were compared with those of the experiment. This simulation is able to enhance the reliance and integrity of structures especially under the elevated temperature which have lots of difficulties in experiments and applications. This shows that the simulation result has utility for fatigue life prediction. Even though all the specimens were the same shape, the error rate was increased in accordance with the applied stress to the specimen. Among the material constants C and m in the narrow band, the results applied upper values of the band to the simulation has shown quite small error compared with the experiment results.

강용접부의 표면균열 성장거동에 관한 연구 1

  • Generally, as the welded region of weld structures has the incomplete bead and welded deposit which are able to behave like the surface cracks occasinally, there is a high possibility that the fatigue fracture of the weld structures is due to the surface cracks on the wlded region. This study was done to investigate the effects of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the fatigue behaviors of the surface crack of the heat affected zone (HAZ) for the multi-pass welds under the repetitive pure bending moment. The obtained results are summarized as follows : 1. The crack grows to the depth direction initially as the number of cylces increase, the amount of crack length is increased for the surface dir3ction and cive versa for the depth direction. 2. The fatigue life is increased in a order of as weld, PWHT specimens and parent. 3. As the number of cycles increase, the crack length is increased to th surface direction. The increase of the depth length is blunted at the center of specimen thickness. 4. The fatigue crack growth of PWHT specimens to the surface direction is dependent upon the holding time and applied stress during PWHT. In order words, the crack growth rate decreases with the holding time and increases with the applied stress during PWHT. 5. As the crack grows, the aspect formed in the course of crack propagation approaches to semicircle for parent and ellipse with the largest semidiameter for PWHT ($1/4hr, 15kgf/mm^2$) 6. At depth direction, it is difficult to apply to the paris' equation because of the scattered data between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor range.

Study on Surface Crack Propagation Behaviour of Mild Steel Weldment in Synthetic Sea Water (인공해수중에서 연강 용접부의 표면구열 성장거동)

  • It was known that the fracture incidences of offshore structure were mostly originated from the surface defects. Especially, in the case of the welded structures, since the welded region has some defects and incomplete beads which are apt to behave like the surface cracks, it has been necessary to evaluate the environmental effects on crack growth at HAZ for the design crack growth behaviour at multi-pall HAZ for SWS41 steel under free corrosion and cathodic protection(-0.9V vs Ag/Agcl) conditions. The results are summarized as follows ; (1) Crack growth rate of the as weld in air was faster than that of the parent and PWHT specimens over all .DELTA.K rang. (2) In free corrosion test, surface crack growth rate of the as welded was decreased in comparison with that of the parents. (3) In fatigue test under cathodic protection, cathodic electric potential(-0.9V vs Ag/Agcl) for the SWS41 steel parent was effective, while for the as welded ineffective. (4) There was a tendency that the exponent(m) of the Paris' equation was decreased in order of microhardness magnititude in air and under cathodic protection conditions and vise versa in free corrosion. (5) Fracture surface has dimples and ductile striations in air test, but transgranular cracks and brittle striations under cathodic protection test.

Contact Damage and Fracture of Poreclain/Glass-Infiltrated Alumina Layer Structure for Dental Application (치아 응용을 위한 /유리침윤 알루미나 이중 층상구조의 접촉손상 및 파괴)

  • Hertzian contact tests were used to investigate the evolution of fracturedamage in the coating layer as functions of contact load and coating thickness by studying crack patterns in porcelain on glass-infiltrated alumina bilayer system conceived to simulate the crown structure of a tooth. Cone cracks initiated at the coating top surface without delamination at interface and crack propagation to substrate. Preferentially the cracks made multi-cracks at the coating top surface rather than proceeding to interface. The cracks were highly stabilized with wide ranges between the loads to initiate first cracking and to cause final failure im-plying damage-tolerant capability. Finite element modelling was used to evaluate the stress distribution. Maximum tensile stress were responsible for the cracking at the coating layer and had a profound influence on the crack pattern and fracture damage in the layered structure materials.
