Carrier Ethernet backbone network integrates distributed layer-2 based metro networks. In this networks, Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) has been uscd as a main routing protocol that allows multiple spanning trees in a network. A better routing protocol called IEEE802.1aq - Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) is recently proposed, that generates the shortest spanning tree per a destination node. As SPB provides a routing path per a destination node, there is no way to adapt network traffic at normal condition. If we are free from the principle of "a spanning tree per a destination node", we can achieve adaptive routing. Based on this philosophy, we propose a new spanning tree based protocol - Edge Node Divided Spanning Tree (ENDIST). ENDIST divides an edge node into sub-nodes as many as connecting links from the node and each sub-node generates a single shortest path tree based on SPB. Depending on network or nodal status, ENDIST chooses a better routing path by flow-basis. This added traffic engineering ability contributes to enhanced throughput and reduced delay in backbone networks. The simulation informs us that ENDIST's throughput under heavy load performs about 3.4-5.8 and 1.5-2.0 times compared with STP's and SPB's one respectively. Also, we verified that ENDIST's throughput corresponds to the theoretical upper bound at half of cases we investigated. This means that the proposed ENDIST is a dramatically enhanced and the close-to-perfect spanning tree based routing schemes.
To provide network services consistently under various network failures, enterprise networks increasingly utilize path diversity through multi-homing. As a result, multi-homed non-transit autonomous systems become to surpass single-homed networks in number. In this paper, we address an inevitable problem that occurs when networks with multiple entry points deploy firewalls in their borders. The majority of today's firewalls use stateful inspection that exploits connection state for fine-grained control. However, stateful inspection has a topological restriction such that outgoing and incoming traffic of a connection should pass through a single firewall to execute desired packet filtering operation. Multi-homed networking environments suffer from this restriction and BGP policies provide only coarse control over communication paths. Due to these features and the characteristics of datagram routing, there exists a real possibility of asymmetric routing. This mismatch between the exit and entry firewalls for a connection causes connection establishment failures. In this paper, we formulate this phenomenon into a state-sharing problem among multiple fire walls under asymmetric routing condition. To solve this problem, we propose a stateful inspection protocol that requires very low processing and messaging overhead. Our protocol consists of the following two phases: 1) Generation of a TCP SYN cookie marked with the firewall identification number upon a SYN packet arrival, and 2) state sharing triggered by a SYN/ACK packet arrival in the absence of the trail of its initial SYN packet. We demonstrate that our protocol is scalable, robust, and simple enough to be deployed for high speed networks. It also transparently works under any client-server configurations. Last but not least, we present experimental results through a prototype implementation.
Sensors have limited resources in sensor networks, so efficient use of energy is important. Representative clustering methods, LEACH, LEACHC, TEEN generally use direct transmission methods from cluster headers to the sink node to pass collected data. However, the communication distance of the sensor nodes at low cost and at low power is not long, it requires a data transfer through the multi-hop to transmit data to the sink node. In the existing cluster-based sensor network studies, cluster process and route selection process are performed separately in order to configure the routing path to the sink node. In this paper, in order to use the energy of the sensor nodes that have limited resources efficiently, a cluster-based multi-hop routing protocol which merges the clustering process and routing process is proposed. And the proposed method complements the problem of uneven cluster creation that may occur in probabilistic cluster methods and increases the energy efficiency of whole sensor nodes.

In wireless sensor networks, real-time applications have to ensure the timely delivery of real-time data. Recently, OMLRP (On-demand Multi-hop Look-ahead Routing Protocol) has been proposed to improve the timeliness of wireless sensor networks. The protocol needs initialization time to establish multi-hop information based routing path because it performs incremental look-ahead of the information. Consequently, the protocol deteriorates DDSR (Deadline Delivery Success Ratio) as an event moves because it takes little consideration of event mobility. In this paper, we proposed a Real-time Routing for Events Mobility (RREM) which exploits a data redirection in order to improve the DDSR of moving events. Instead of recollecting muti-hop look-ahead information, the RREM redirects the data to a sensor node holding the information collected in a previous round. We verify the timeliness and energy efficiency of RREM using various MatLab simulations.
Self-organizing hierarchical ad hoc network (SOHAN) is a new ad-hoc network architecture designed to improve the scalability properties of conventional 'flat' ad hoc networks. This network architecture consists of three tiers of ad-hoc nodes, i.e.. access points, forwarding nodes and mobile nodes. This paper presents a topology discovery and routing protocol for the self-organization of SOHAN. We propose a cross-layer path metric based on link quality and MAC delay which plays a key role in producing an optimal cluster-based hierarchical topology with high throughput capacity. The topology discovery protocol provides the basis for routing which takes place in layer 2.5 using MAC addresses. The routing protocol is based on AODV with appropriate modifications to take advantage of the hierarchical topology and interact with the discovery protocol. Simulation results are presented which show the improved performance as well as scalability properties of SOHAN in terms of through-put capacity, end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio and control overhead.

In this paper, we propose a new multi-path routing protocol to provide reliable and stable data transmission in MANET that is composed of high-mobility nodes. The new multi-path routing establishes the main route by the mechanism based on AODV, and then finds the backup route that node-disjoint from the main route by making add nodes in the main route not participate in it. The data transmission starts immediately after finding the main route. And the backup route search process is taking place while data is transmitted to reduce the transmission delay. When either of the main route or the backup route is broken, data is transmitted continuously through the other route and the broken route is recovered to node-disjoint route by the route maintenance process. The result of the simulation based on the Qualnet simulator shows that the backup route exists 62.5% of the time when the main route is broken. And proposed routing protocol improved the packet transmission rate by 2~3% and reduced the end-to-end delay by 10% compared with AODV and AODV-Local Repair.
A wireless sensor network communication technique has been broadly studied with continuous advances in ubiquitous computing environment. Especially, because the resource of the sensor node is limited, it is important to reduce the communication energy by using an energy-efficient routing protocol. The existing cluster-based routing protocols have a problem that they cannot select a cluster head efficiently by randomly choosing a head. In addition, because the existing cluster-based routing protocols do not support the large scale of network, they cannot be used for various applications. To solve the above problems, we, in this paper, propose a new cluster-based routing protocol using representative paths. The proposed protocol constructs an efficient cluster with distributed cluster heads by creating representative paths based on hop count. In addition, a new routing protocol supports multi-hop routing for data communication between a cluster member node and a cluster head as well as between cluster heads. Finally, we show that our protocol outperforms LEACH and Multihop-LEACH in terms of reliability and scalability.

In this paper, we describe recent research results on AODV routing protocol, which is widely deployed at mobile ad hoc networks, and AODV related routing protocols with multi-path routing schemes. We suggest the critical problems which minimum hop routing schemes have, such as AODV routing protocol, and then, propose a new C-AODV routing protocol with two routing metrics: the primary metric is the hop count, the secondary metric is the sum of link delay times. We implemented C-AODV protocol by modifying AODV at the NS-3, and thus, elaborate on how we change the original AODV source code of NS-3 in order to implement the C-AODV scheme. We show numerical comparison of C-AODV scheme with the original AODV scheme and then, discuss how much the C-AODV enhances routing performance over AODV protocol. In conclusion, we present future research items.
This paper presents a constrained-based routing (CBR) algorithm called, Dynamic Possible Path per Link (D-PPL) routing algorithm, for MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks. In MPLS on-line routing, future traffics are unknown and network resource is limited. Therefore many routing algorithms such as Minimum Hop Algorithm (MHA), Widest Shortest Path (WSP), Dynamic Link Weight (DLW), Minimum Interference Routing Algorithm (MIRA), Profiled-Based Routing (PBR), Possible Path per Link (PPL) and Residual bandwidth integrated - Possible Path per Link (R-PPL) are proposed in order to improve network throughput and reduce rejection probability. MIRA is the first algorithm that introduces interference level avoidance between source-destination node pairs by integrating topology information or address of source-destination node pairs into the routing calculation. From its results, MIRA improves lower rejection probability performance. Nevertheless, MIRA suffer from its high routing complexity which could be considered as NP-Complete problem. In PBR, complexity of on-line routing is reduced comparing to those of MIRA, because link weights are off-line calculated by statistical profile of history traffics. However, because of dynamic of traffic nature, PBR maybe unsuitable for MPLS on-line routing. Also, both PPL and R-PPL routing algorithm we formerly proposed, are algorithms that achieve reduction of interference level among source-destination node pairs, rejection probability and routing complexity. Again, those previously proposed algorithms do not take into account the dynamic nature of traffic load. In fact, future traffics are unknown, but, amount of previous traffic over link can be measured. Therefore, this is the motivation of our proposed algorithm, the D-PPL. The D-PPL algorithm is improved based on the R-PPL routing algorithm by integrating traffic-per-link parameters. The parameters are periodically updated and are dynamically changed depended on current incoming traffic. The D-PPL tries to reserve residual bandwidth to service future request by avoid routing through those high traffic-per-link parameters. We have developed extensive MATLAB simulator to evaluate performance of the D-PPL. From simulation results, the D-PPL improves performance of MPLS on-line routing in terms of rejection probability and total throughput.
