Design and Evaluation of a Multi-layer Interior PM Synchronous Motor for High-Speed Drive Applications

  • In general, surface mounted PM synchronous motors (SPMSMs) are mainly adopted as a driving motor for high-speed applications, because they have high efficiency and high power density. However, the SPMSMs have some weak points such as the increase of magnetic reluctance and additional losses as a consequence of using a non-magnetic sleeve. Especially, the magneto-motive force (MMF) in the air-gap of the SPMSMs is weakened due to the magnetically increased resistance. For that reason, a large amount of PM is consumed to meet the required MMF. Nevertheless, it cannot help using the sleeve in order to maintain the mechanical integrity of a rotor assembly in high-speed rotation. Thus, in this paper, a multi-layer interior PM synchronous motor (IPMSM) not using the sleeve is presented and designed as an alternative of a SPMSM. Both motors are evaluated by test results based on a variety of characteristics required for an air blower system of a fuel cell electric vehicle.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Having very strong current on the west coast with up to 10 m tidal range, there are many suitable site for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power) in Korea. On the south west regions between many islands that create strong current in the narrow channels. The rotor is one of the essential components which can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The design optimization of rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of rotor can be determined by various parameters including number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameters and etc. This paper introduces the multi-layer vertical axis tidal current power system which can be applied to offshore jetties and piers effectively. Various cases of VAT turbine were designed. Specifically, the number of blades and turbine shape are changed in several cases. Also, performance analysis was carried out by CFD.

In the southwest region, a strong current is created in the narrow channels between the numerous islands. A rotor is an essential component that can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The design optimization of a rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of a rotor can be determined using various parameters, including the number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameter, etc. There are many offshore jetties and piers with high current velocities. Thus, a VAT (vertical axis turbine) system, which can generate power regardless of flow direction changes, could be effectively applied to cylindrical structures. A VAT system could give an advantage to a caisson-type breakwater because it allows water to circulate well. This paper introduces a multi-layer vertical axis tidal current power system. A Savonius turbine was designed, and a performance analysis was carried out using CFD. A physical model was also demonstrated in CWC, and the results are compared with CFD.

  • Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) is defined as a high speed rotating flywheel system that can save surplus electric power. The FESS is proposed as an efficient energy storage system because it can accumulate a large amount of energy when it is operated at a high rotating speed and no mechanical problems are encountered. The FESS consists of a shaft, flywheel, motor/generator, bearings, and case. It is difficult to simulate rotor dynamics using common structure simulation programs because these programs are based on the 3D model and complex input rotating conditions. Therefore, in this paper, a program for the FESS based on the 2D FEM was developed. The 2D FEM can model easier than 3D, and it can present the multi-layer rotor with different material each other. Stiffness changing of the shaft caused by shrink fitting of the hub can be inputted to get clear solving results. The results obtained using the program were compared with those obtained using the common programs to determine any errors.
