Current leads are one of the important components for carrying the current to the coil in the superconducting magnet system. Heat leakage through the current lead is the major factor of entire heat load in the cryogenic system because current leads carry the current from room temperature to near 4 K, connecting thermally each other. Therefore, minimization heat load through current lead can reduce the operating temperature of superconducting magnet. The semi-retractable current lead, composed of multi-contact connector and HTS element, is one of good options. Comprehension of Multi-contact connector's structure, contact resistance and heat generation is essential for estimating heat generation in current leads. Multi-contact connector has several louvers inside of socket and the shape, number, size of louvers are different with the size of connector. Therefore contact area, current path and contact resistance are also different. In this study, the contact resistance in multi-contact connector is measured using the electrical power as a function of connector's size and temperature. Also, the unique correlation of electrical contact resistance is derived and heat generation is estimated for superconducting magnet application.
A multi-contact tooth meshing model for helical gear pairs considering bearing and shaft deformations is proposed. First, to easily incorporate into the system model, the complicated Harris' bearing force-displacement relationship is simplified applying a linear least square curve fit. Then, effects of shaft and bearing flexibilities on the helical gear meshing behavior are implemented through transformation matrices which contain the helical gear orientation and spatial displacement under loads. Finally, true contact lines between conjugated teeth are approximated applying a modified meshing equation that includes the influence of tooth flank displacement on the tooth contact induced by shaft and bearing displacements. Based on the model, the bearing's force-displacement relation is examined, and the effects of shaft deformation and external load on the multi-contact tooth mesh load distribution are also analyzed. The advantage of this work is, unlike previous works to search true contact lines through time-consuming iterative strategy, to determine true contact lines between conjugated teeth directly with presentation of deformations of bearings and shafts.
This paper presents a method for calculating contact force between bodies on plane. At each integration time step, the proposed method finds expected contact point on their outlines and then calculates penetration, velocity of penetration and contact force. This paper adopts continuous analysis method and multi-point contact method to calculate contact force. To obtain the accurate expected contact point on their outlines, a new algorithm is developed. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by comparing the numerical results of the proposed method and DADS.
A method for reducing the contact noise of the Progressive Multi-Leaf Spring was investigated. It was found that the contact noise between the main and the help springs is the main source of the noise through our experiments. The conclusions from our experiments were compared with those from our numerical analysis by use of ABAQUS. The main parameters for the unexpected noise in the leaf spring were investigated through structural analysis to make describing noise generation. The contact process between the two leaves is examined by numerical calculations by ABAQUS. The noise produced by the leaf spring could be dramatically reduced by changing the shape of help spring so as to remove a translational jump of the contact point between the main and the help springs. Even with the help spring of the new proposed shape the stiffness of the whole spring did not change much.
The offshore subsea platforms are connected to subsea pipelines to transport gas/oil from wells. The pipe is a multilayered structure of polymer and steel for compensating both flexibility and strength. The pipe also requires reinforcement structures to endure the extreme environmental conditions. A vertebrae structure of bend restrictors is one of the reinforcement structures installed to protect the subsea pipe from excessive bending deformations. In this study, structural behaviors of the subsea pipeline with bend restrictors are investigated by the multi-body contact analysis in Abaqus 6.14-2. Contact forces of each bend restrictor extracted from the multi-body contact analysis can be boundary conditions for topology design optimization in Altair Hyperworks 13.0 Hypermesh-Optistruct. Multiple design constraints are considered to obtain a manufacturable design with efficient material usage. Through the multi-body contact analysis with optimized bend restrictors, it is confirmed that the bending performance of the optimized design is enhanced.
The results of the electrical contact conductivity of multi-contact spots accounting the surface roughness and the non-conductive films of different origins such as air, water, cutting oil, and machining oil are presented. The array of metal spheres compressed between two flat plates has been used for simulation of the contact behavior of multiple contact of solids, under normal loading. Measurement of electrical contact resistance has been made using the equipment providing the adequate accuracy in the range of micro Ohms. The data on electrical contact resistance have been compared with theoretical predictions using the multiple contact model of constriction resistance. The effect of single spot number and array on conductivity of contact has been evaluated. The results of the experiments show that the contact resistance are closely related to the number of loading cycles, form of surface roughness, and presence of non-conductive films that reduce the size of the real electrical contact spots.
Tri-crystalline silicon (Tri-Si) wafers have three different orientations and three grain boundaries. In this paper, tri-Si wafers have been used for the fabrication of buried contact solar cells. The optical and micro-structural properties of these cells after texturing in KOH solution have been investigated and compared with those of cast multi-crystalline silicon (multi-Si) wafers. We employed a cost effective fabrication process and achieved buried contact solar cell (BCSC) energy conversion efficiencies up to 15% whereas the cast multi-Si wafer has efficiency around 14%.
An algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal contact forces of robotic hands, where the soft finger contact as well as the frictional point contact are considered. Especially, the algorithm can be efficiently applied to the case of multi-point contact by inner-link as well as fingertip. To show the validities of the algorithm, several numerical exampies are presented by employing a robotics hand with three fingers each of which has four joints.
