Construction work in island areas requires the materials to be transported by ship and plane, and it causes an increase in the construction costs. In addition, the construction work near marine zones may produce the marine pollution due to the harmful substances in the cement. Recently, nature-friendly construction materials are increasingly used, and there is a need to select and develop appropriate construction materials. In this study, the compressive strength, tensile strength, flow and chloride content of the mortar mixed with cement and muddy tidal flat were measured to reduce the amount of cement by applying the natural materials, muddy tidal flat and marine sand, and the results were provided as the basic construction material data.
The spatial variation of organic matter sources in tidal flat sediment of the Nanakita River estuary, involving Gamo lagoon on the north-east coast of Honshu Island, Japan, was examined using carbon stable isotopes and fatty acid biomarkers. The spatial variation of total organic carbon (TOC) contents and ${\delta}^{13}C$ values were highly variable in between the stations, such as sandy flat (1.3 mg/g, -21.0‰), sand-muddy flat (2.6 mg/g, -21.9‰), and muddy flat (24.9 mg/g, -25.9‰), respectively. Particularly, at the muddy flat, high TOC content and low ${\delta}^{13}C$ value of the sediments indicated that the surface sediment was composed largely of terrestrial organic matter. Whereas, at the sandy flat and sand-muddy flat, the high ratios of diatom and bacteria biomarkers indicated the high contribution of abundant microorganism along with marine organic matter in sediment composition. From these results, it considered that the amount and origin of transported sedimentary organic matter indicated different characteristics in this study stations.

Field experiment were carried out to investigate the formation of ground water flow and remediation of muddy tidal flat by installation of porous pile at the tidal flat of brackish river located in Hiroshima City, Japan. After the installation of porous pile, the concentrations of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) in the interstitial water in the porous pile increased with maximum concentration of 4 mg/L due to a formation of groundwater flow. It was observed that a increase in Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) and a decrease in Ignition Loss (IL) in the porous pile site and these must be caused by the increase of dissolved oxygen in the interstitial water. From these results obtained above, it is concluded that the porous pile is an effective technology for remediation of muddy tidal flats.
The southern tidal flat of Kanghwa Island with an area of approximately $90km^2$ is one of the biggest flats on the west coast of Korea. Surface sediments for sedimentary analyses were sampled at 83 stations in August 1997, September 1999 and August 2000. The very poorly-sorted mud sediments were predominant in the eastern part of the tidal flat, whereas the poorly-sorted sand-mud mixed sediments were dominant in the western part. The area of muddy sediment distribution diminished, but that of sandy mud sediment extended to southeastward tidal flat for three years. In the western part of tidal flat, deposition occurred during the period of spring to summer, whereas erosion occurred in winter. Sediment accumulation rates during three years indicated that the sediments deposited continuously in the eastern part of tidal flat, whereas eroded in the western part of tidal flat. Recently, construction of artificial structures such as new airport, island-connecting bridges and dikes near the tidal flat might change tidal current and river flow pattern. In order to reduce the ecological damage and to preserve tidal-flat environment, it is necessary to Investigate long-term impacts on sedimentary environment and ecology.
Three deep borings to obtain vertical continuous samples including weathered basement soils (KP-1, KP-2 and KP-3) were carried out in the reclaimed Kimpo tidal flat with purposes to establish late Quaternary stratigraphy. On the basis of detailed observations and descriptions on color, sedimentary structure and textural composition of cored sediments, four lithostratigraphic units are classified. From the stratigraphic top to bottom, they are Holocene tidal sand and muddy deposit (Unit I), early Holocene freshwater marsh muddy deposit (Unit II), late Pleistocene tidal sand and muddy deposit (Unit III) and late Pleistocene basal fluvial gravel deposit (Unit IV). In particular, Unit III is divided into two parts: the upper part-weathered and cryoturbated part during the Last Glacial Maximum (Unit III-a) and the lower part-unweathered tidal sand and muddy deposit (Unit III-b).

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the grain size distribution and organic matters to understand the current status of the tidal flat sediment for efficient management of Suncheon Bay. We investigated the characteristics of the surface sediments in the mouth area of the Suncheon Bay at fifteen stations in April and July, 2009. Specific conclusions were as follows. The sediments in the most part of tidal flat was shown as muddy facies(clay and silt contents was more than 90%), whereas in the tidal river affected by water flow from the Dongstream was shown as sandy facies. The analyzed values of the tidal flat sediment were in the range of $1.9{\sim}3.8{\phi}$(mean $2.5{\phi}$) for sorting, and -1.5~3.2(mean -0.3) for skewness, and 1.5~14.1(mean 3.9) for kurtosis. So we knew that the tidal flat sediments in the Suncheon Bay was mainly composed by fine-grained sediment. Erosion was happened in the tidal river, whereas sedimentation was occurred in the tidal flat. The most of organic matters was derived from the Dongstream. Total organic matters shown as ignition loss was 5.75%, COD and $H_2S$ values were lower than the eutrophication level(COD; 20.0 mg/g dry, $H_2S$; 0.2 mg S/g dry). From our research the tidal flat of the Suncheon Bay is relatively fine, but a part of the flat was exceed the environmental standard. So we have to establish effective countermeasures to reduce the organic matters and nutrients derived from stream for environmental preservation of the Suncheon bay and conduct scientifically sustainable monitering for streams flowing into Suncheon Bay and tidal flat.
In Janghwa-ri of Kanghwa Island morphological changes in four transects, 112 surface, and 2 core sediments were analyzed to understand the seasonal variation of the muddy tidal-flat environment. Sedimentary of facies can be classified into four facies; sand, muddy sand, sandy mud, and silt. During winter, the coarse-grained sediment facies expanded seaward. In the subsurface part of the core sediments, poorly sorted silty sediments dominate the area. According to the Pb-210 isotope analysis, accumulation rates of the tidal flat in Jangwha-ri appear to be $5{\sim}19mm/yr$. In the study area, the result is suggestive of a rapid change in depositional environments in recent years.
Comparisons of surface sediment distributions in summer 1997 and 2011 and elevations on the tidal flats in April 1998 and March 2013 had been used for understanding the long-term changes of sedimentary environments at southern Kanghwa tidal flat, west coast of Korea. The mud sediments dominated in the eastern part and sandy mud sediments dominated in the western part of the tidal flat in 1997. In 2011, the surface sediments were dominant mud and sandy mud at Sunduri and Tonggum in the eastern part, sandy mud at Tongmakri in the middle part, and sand and muddy sand at Yeochari and Changhwari tidal flats in the western part. The area of mud sediments had decreased, but that of sand-mud mixed sediments extended to eastward tidal flat for 14 years. The long-term topographic changes showed that deposition occurred at Tongmakri and Yeochari and erosion occurred at Changhwari tidal flat during 15 years. These changes should be effected the local hydrodynamic changes by several constructions near the tidal flat since the 1990s.

From January to December 2007, we have investigated sediment types, environmental factors and density of clam Ruditapes philippinarum inhabited at Oeri, Naeri, Jonghyeon and Bangmiri tidal flats in Gyeonggi Bay off the west coast of Korea. Sediment types of Oeri and Jonghyeon were characterized with well sorted muddy sand. In contrast, Bangmiri tidal flat was mainly composed of poorly sorted gravelly muddy silt and Naeri was characterized with very poorly sorted muddy-sandy gravel. During the course of study, the surface water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH ranged 3.2 to $27.0^{\circ}C$, 21.7 to 33.3 ‰, 5.6 to 12.7 mg/l and 7.36 to 8.82, respectively. The suspended solid (SS) ranged from 3.2 to 1,266.0 mg/l and chlorophyll-a level in the water column ranged $0.3-36.1{\mu}g/l$, respectively. The density of clam in the study areas was mainly determined by the harvesting activities rather than the types of substrate. Relatively higher density of clam was observed in Oeri and Bangmiri where the clam seeds were sowed by the villagers. Condition factor of clams were found to be higher in Oeri where the substrate sorting was better with higher level of chlorophyll a. It was believed that sediment types and the level of available food the two governing factors controlling the density and growth of clam in Gyeonggi Bay.

Changes in density of manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum to environment, catch and recruitment were studied in a few stations (Seonjae, Seongam, Hwangdo and Padori) in the West coast area of Korea from January, 2007 to December, 2009. Water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH in the study stations were 0.8 to $31.2^{\circ}C$, 22.1 to 33.7 psu, 5.0 to 12.0 mg/L and 7.39 to 8.99, respectively. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate and silicate were 0.016 to 1.281 mg/L, 0.004 to 0.093 mg/L and 0.016 to 1.617 mg/L, respectively. Chlorophyll-a ranged from 0.2 to 12.1 ${\mu}g/L$, respectively. Substrata were mainly composed of muddy sand and very poorly sorted in Padori, muddy sand and well sorted in Seonjae and Hwangdo, gravelly muddy sand and poorly sorted in Seongam. Density was high in Seonjae and Seongam, but low in Hwangdo and Padori. In clam culture station, in which spat was naturally produced without sowing seedlings, the living density was decreased by increasing of death and a catch of shellfish, and recruitment was changed. Also, Density affected condition factor and shape of clam. Condition factor was the highest in Hwangdo, in which temperature in the winter and chlorophyll-a were high, and was the lowest in Padori. In the shape of clam, the shape in Seongam was a elongated form, but in Padori was a stunted form.
