This paper presents a new small-sized damper featuring magneto-rheological (MR) fluid which can be applied to vibration control system. The proposed MR damper consists of cylinder, piston, a couple of bearings, oil-seals and magnetic circuit which has two coils. In this damper, approximately 5cc of MR fluid is used. The damping force of the MR damper is designed to be followed by linear shear-mode Bingham-plastic model. In order to verify the performance of the MR damper, an experimental apparatus is established. In the experimental test, the damping force of the MR damper is measured with respect to time, displacement and velocity. In addition, the time response of MR damper is measured when 1A of step current is applied. Finally, The proposed small MR damper is applied to vibration control. In this process, a simple 1-DOF system is modeled and controlled using PID controller.

Lots of semi-active control devices have been developed in recent years because they have the best features of passive and active system. Especially, controllable magneto-rheological(MR) fluid devices have received significant attention in these area of research. The MR fluid is the material that reversibly changes from a free-flowing, linear viscous fluid to a semisolid with a controllable yield strength in milliseconds when exposed to a magnetic field. If the magnetic field is induced by moving a permanent magnet instead of applying current to a solenoid, it is possible to design a MR damper consuming low power because the power consumption is reduced at steady state. This paper proposes valve mode MR damper using permanent magnetic circuit that has wide range of operation with low power consumption and small size. To design a MR damper that has a large maximum dissipating torque and a low damping coefficient, a design parameter is adopted. The magnetic circuit, material of choke and choke type are selected experimentally with the design parameter. The behaviors of the damper are examined and torque tracking control using PID feedback controller is performed for step, ramp and sinusoidal trajectories.

A new semiactive control strategy for seismic response reduction using a neuro-controller and a magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper is proposed. The proposed control system adopts a clipped algorithm which induces the MR damper to generate approximately the desired force. The improved neuro - controller, which was developed by employing the training algorithm based on a cost function and the sensitivity evaluation algorithm replacing an emulator neural network, produces the desired active control force, and then by using the clipped algorithm the appropriate command voltage is selected in order to cause the MR damper to generate the desired control force. The simulation results show that the proposed semiactive neuro-control algorithm is quite effective to reduce seismic responses. In addition, the semi-active control system using MR fluid dampers has many attractive features, such as the bounded-input, bounded-output stability and small energy requirements. The results of this investigation, therefore, indicate that the proposed semi-active neuro-control strategy using MR fluid dampers could be effectively used for control of seismically excited structures.

The surface integrity of micro-machined products affects the performance of products significantly. Micro-burrs resulting from micro-cutting degrades the surface quality. Therefore it is desired to eliminate them completely and many studies have been undertaken for this purpose. In this study, micro-end-milling was carried out on nickel alloy and brass materials commercially used for light guide plate mold in 3-D optical devices. After completing this micro-machining, the burr heights were measured with a microscope. Then, deburring was done on the machined edges using the MR jet polishing method. A jet angle of $0^{\circ}$ and deburring times of 1, 3, and 5 min. were chosen. It was found that burrs were completely eliminated after 5 min of MR fluid jet polishing.

A new semi-active control strategy for seismic response reduction using a neuro-controller and a magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper is proposed. The proposed control system consists of the improved neuro-controller and the bang-bang-type controller. The improved neuro-controller, which was developed by employing the training algorithm based on a cost function and the sensitivity evaluation algorithm replacing an emulator neural network, produces the desired active control force, and then the bang-bang-type controller causes the MR fluid damper to generate the desired control force, so long as this force is dissipative. In numerical simulation, a three-story building structure is semi-actively controlled by the trained neural network under the historical earthquake records. The simulation results show that the proposed semi-active neuro-control algorithm is quite effective to reduce seismic responses.
MR-TLCD (Magneto-Rheological Tuned Liquid Column Damper) is a new developed vibration control device, which combines the traditional passive control property with active controllability advantage. Based on traditional TLCD governing equation, this study further considers MR-fluid viscosity in the equation and by transforming the non-linear damping term into an equivalent linear damping, a solution can be obtained. In order to find a countable set of parameters for the design of the MR-TLCD system and also to realize its applicability to structures, a series of experimental test were designed and carried out. The testing programs include the basic material properties of the MR-fluid, the damping ratio of a MR-TLCD and the dynamic responses for a frame structure equipped with the MR-TLCD system subjected to strong ground excitations. In both the analytical and experimental results of this study, it is found that the accurately tuned MR-TLCD system could effectively reduce the dynamic response of a structural system.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are capable of changing their rheological properties under the application of external fields. When MR fluids operate in the so-called squeeze mode, in which displacement levels are limited to a few millimetres but there are large forces, they have many potential applications in vibration isolation. This paper presents an experimental and a numerical investigation of the performance of an MR fluid under tensile and compressive loads and oscillatory squeeze-flow. The performance of the fluid was found to depend dramatically on the strain direction. The shape of the stress-strain hysteresis loops was affected by the strength of the applied field, particularly when the fluid was under tensile loading. In addition, the yield force of the fluid under the oscillatory squeeze-flow mode changed almost linearly with the applied electric or magnetic field. Finally, in order to shed further light on the mechanism of the MR fluid under squeeze operation, computational fluid dynamics analyses of non-Newtonian fluid behaviour using the Bingham-plastic model were carried out. The results confirmed superior fluid performance under compressive inputs.
This paper presents the new MR rotary brake with a permanent magnet, based on the shear operating mode. Due to the permanent magnet, the MR rotary brake can give the nominal resistance to the external disturbance and give the fail safe capacity to the system even when the power supply is accidentally cut off. As we apply the positive or negative current to the electric magnet coil, the resistance torque of the MR rotary brake can be reduced to the value less than the nominal resistance or increased up to the magnetic saturation point.
