Upward, Downward Stair Detection Method by using Obliq ue Distance (사거리를 이용한 상향, 하향 계단 검출 방법)

  • Moving assistant devices for people who are difficult to move are becoming electric-powered and automated. These moving assistant devices are not suitable for moving stairs at which the height between floor surfaces is different because these devices are designed and manufactured for flatland moving. An electric-powered and automated moving assistant device should change direction or stop when it approaches stairs in a movement direction. If the user or automatic control system does not change direction or stop in time, a moving assistant device can roll over or collide with stairs. In this paper, we propose a stairs detection method by using oblique distance measured by one sensor tilted to flatland. The method proposed in this paper can detect upward or downward stairs by using a difference between a predicted and measured oblique distance in considering a tilted angle of a sensor for measuring an oblique distance and installation height of the sensor on a moving object. Before the device enters a stairs region, if our proposed method provides information about detected stairs to a device's controller, the controller can do adequate action to avoid the accident.

Design of Manual Wheelchair with a Function of Bed Transfer (침대 이송 기능을 갖춘 수동식 휠체어 설계)

  • In general, manual wheelchairs have played important roles in moving patients from one place to another. However, patients have experienced discomfort getting on and off because of the need for physical assistance. This can be more serious if a patient has handicaps involving the arms or legs. In addition, it could be unpleasant for both the patient and assistant because of the need for extensive physical contact with each other. At times, a weak nurse feels that there is a risk when transferring a heavy patient from a bed to a wheelchair. In this paper, a new non-powered wheelchair is designed to assist in transferring a patient to their bed. This design considers the convenience of both the patient and assistant when the patient is transferred from a wheelchair to a bed and vice versa. The operation minimizes the physical contact between the assistant and the patient. The new wheelchair is also lightweight and portable compared with the normal popular wheelchair.

Design of an Absolute Location and Position Measuring System for a Mobile Robot

  • This paper focuses on a development of a sensor system measuring locations of a vehicle to localize a mobile robot while it tracks on the track (location sensor) . Also it focuses on a system configuration identifying the vehicle's orientation and distance from the object while it is stationary at certain station (position sensor) . As for the location sensor it consists of a set of sensors with a combined guiding and counting sensor, and an address-coded sensor to localize the vehicle while moving on the rail. For the position sensor a PSD (Position Sensitive Device) sensor with photo-switches sensor to measure the offset and orientation of the vehicle at each station is introduced. Both sensor systems are integrated with a microprocessor as a data relay to the main computer controlling the vehicle. The location sensor system is developed and its performance for a mobile robot is verified by experiments. The position measuring system is proposed and is robust to the environmental variation. Moreover, the two kinds of sensor systems guarantee a low cost application and high reliability.

  • In the focusing on the important of wireless internet, mobile terminal device plays a central role in tracking and coordinating terms in mobile business processing. Especially, mobile device has been considered as a key technology for embedded software and ubiquitous era. Because existing web environments is moving to wireless internet, the new concepts for wireless internet computing environments has gained increasing interest. Mobile agents provide a new abstraction for deploying over the existing infrastructures. Mobile application systems require the flexibility, adaptability, extensibility, and autonomous. New software developments methodology is required to meet the requirements. In this paper, we present an agent architectures model that allows compassable components with pluggable and independable. Our approach involves wrapping components inside a servlet. We have used the model and components to develop the PDA mobile agent.
