  • This study is about laser welded joints in order to replace the traditional screw connection of a differential gear and its case in the differential gear assembly. Screws are usually used to join these parts. But the screws take up weight and space. So we needed to improve the joining method. In the welding of a differential gear and its case, the quality is much harder to control, because the high carbon contents of the two components results in cold cracks. But a new method that adds wire allows these materials to be joined. Additionally, more distortions generally occurs in the welded joints than in screws. We tried to prove that laser welding is an available method for joining these parts through the measurement and various tests.

  • This study proposes a method for improving the overmodulation performance of a three-phase inverter to obtain an enhanced output torque for the AC motors. In the inverter-fed AC motor drives, the output torque of the motor can be enhanced by utilizing the overmodulation region as well as the linear modulation regions of the inverter. The overmodulation method is used for this overmodulation operation of the inverter. However, the voltage gain, the ratio of the output voltage of the inverter to the reference voltage achieved by the conventional overmodulation methods becomes nonlinearly smaller than unity. Therefore, the effect of improving the output torque of the AC motors is insignificant even when the overmodulation region is utilized. In this study, we propose a method that improves the overmodulation performance of the inverter by compensating the limited amount of the reference voltage in the overmodulation operation to enhance the output torque of the AC motors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through the simulations and experiments with an 800 W permanent magnet synchronous motor.

  • This study proposes compensation methods for the initial position error and torque ripple in vector control of two-phase hybrid stepping motors. Stepping motors have an asymmetrical structure due to misalignment, such as the eccentricity generated by the manufacturing and assembly process. When vector control is applied using the position information measured by an incremental encoder attached to the rotor shaft of such stepping motors, the following problems occur. First, an initial position error occurs during the forced excitation process for the initial rotor position alignment. Second, torque ripple corresponding to the mechanical rotation frequency is generated. In this study, these non-ideal phenomena that occur in vector control of the stepping motor are analyzed, and compensation methods are proposed to eliminate them. The validity of the proposed initial position error and torque ripple compensation methods is verified through experiments on a two-phase hybrid stepping motor drive system.

  • Induction motors are a critical component of many industrial processes and are frequently integrated in commercially available equipment. Safety, reliability, efficiency, and performance are some of the major concerns of induction motor applications. Preventive maintenance of induction motors has been a topic great interest to industry because of their wide range application of industry. Since the use of mechanical sensors, such as vibration probes, strain gauges, and accelerometers is often impractical, the motor current signature analysis (MACA) techniques have gained murk popularity as diagnostic tool. Fault tolerant control (FTC) strives to make the system stable and retain acceptable performance under the system faults. All present FTC method can be classified into two groups. The first group is based on fault detection and diagnostics (FDD). The second group is independent of FDD and includes methods such as integrity control, reliable stabilization and simultaneous stabilization. This paper presents the fundamental FDD-based FTC methods, which are capable of on-line detection and diagnose of the induction motors. Therefore, our group has developed the embedded distributed fault tolerant and fault diagnosis system for industrial motor. This paper presents its architecture. These mechanisms are based on two 32-bit DSPs and each TMS320F2407 DSP module is checking stator current, voltage, temperatures, vibration and speed of the motor. The DSPs share information from each sensor or DSP through DPRAM with hardware implemented semaphore. And it communicates the motor status through field bus (CAN, RS485). From the designed system, we get primitive sensors data for the case of normal condition and two abnormal conditions of 3 phase induction motor control system is implemented. This paper is the first step to drive multi-motors with serial communication which can satisfy the real time operation using CAN protocol.

  • In commercial vehicles such as frame-based mid-size trucks, it is easy to reduce vibration caused by driveline with the cab mount system. There are no critical driveline vibration problems associated with these vehicles up to now. However, in the case of a similar grade of monocoque type mini-bus, there are no effective vibration isolation components such as a cab mount. Vibration caused by driveline is quite a complex problem to understand in terms of which part governs the phenomenon and how the problem can be solved. Thus, we have to manage the design factor about the driveline and mount system strictly at the early stage of vehicle development. Low frequency vibration caused by the driveline system is investigated in this study. We created the CAE driveline model and analyze low frequency vibration. Then contribution analysis about each design factor of driveline and mount system is performed. Finally, we can obtain the optimized design factor for a driveline system of a mini-bus, which is verified by the vehicle test results.

  • The small precision spindle motors in the high value-added products including the visible home appliances such as DLP projector require not only the energy conversion devices but also high efficiency, low vibration and sound operation. However, the spindle motors using the conventional ball bearing and sintered porous metal bearing have following problems, respectively: the vibration by the irregularity of balls and the short motor life cycle by the ball's abrasion and higher sound noises by dry contact between shaft and sleeve. In this paper, it is proposed that the spindle motor with a fluid dynamic bearing is suitable for the motor to drive the color wheel of the DLP(digital lightening processor) in the visible home appliances. The proposed spindle motor is composed of the fluid dynamic bearing with both the radial force and the thrust force. The fluid dynamic bearing is solved by the finite element analysis of the mechanical field with the Reynolds equations. The magnetic part of spindle motor, which is a type of Brushless DC Motor, is designed by the electro-magnetic field analysis coupled with the Maxwell equation. And the load capacity and the friction loss of fluid dynamic bearing are analyzed to bearing clearance variation by the fabrication error in designed motor. The design of the proposed motor is implemented by the load torque caused by the eccentricity and the unbalance of the fluid dynamic bearing when the motors are fabricated in error. The prototype of the motor with the fluid dynamic bearing is manufactured, and experiment results show the vibration, sound, and phase current at no load and color wheel load of the motors in comparison. The high performance characteristics with the low vibration, the low acoustic noise and the optimal mechanical structure are verified by the experimental results.

  • When the stator windings of 3 phase induction motors are in wrong condition, the mutual inductive responses between windings can be utilized for the purpose of diagnosing motors in that fault windings affect even the responses by DC excitation. Three phase induction motors are supposed to generate consistent inductive voltages at the remaining windings when exciting DC current is given to one of 3 windings, while the inconsistence of their voltages indicates the existence of disorder at electric motors. This study describes how the exciting current to one of three windings cause the other windings to create induced voltages, analyzing responses by transfer functions, and discloses whether or not the balance relation at two windings is normal in the way of measuring the differential voltage of their outputs. For experiment, common analog multi-testers is used for applying exciting current and measuring the output signal to confirm whether the proposed method is useful enough to be able to discriminate wrong polarities of windings onboard vessels including also the case of exciting current by AC.

  • Faulty electric motors onboard vessels with anomalies in windings or poor insulation are usually repaired at land based workshops and reinstalled in place by crew hands after receiving the repaired motors. Especially for 3 phase induction motors which need Y-${\delta}$ starters with 6 lead wires, it would happen that the polarities of stator windings cannot be well distinguished if the original tags of these wires are erased or not visible clearly, resulting in subsequent damage to the repaired motor due to extreme current flow when the power is given to the motor the stator windings of which are wrongly connected in the polarity. This study proposes an easy way to make correct connection in winding polarities without failures based on the electro-magnetically induced voltages on windings when a slight DC current is supplied to a winding coil by using an analog multi-tester. The proposed method is applied to actual motors and delves into the applicability for polarity discrimination through a few measurements onboard vessels.

  • This paper deals with the power loss and thermal characteristics of induction motor for machine tools according to the rated power and speed. To reduce the fabrication error by thermal strain in rotational machine tools, we calculated the power loss and thermal behavior of induction motors. Firstly, the inverse design of general induction motors for machine tool spindle has been performed. The inverse design results are compared with the torque-speed characteristic curve in motor's catalog. The power loss are calculated by finite element method(FEM) at rated condition. Secondary, the transient thermal characteristics of induction motors are calculated by equivalent thermal resistance model from Motor-CAD S/W. The inverse design, power loss and thermal behavior calculation for induction motors with various rated power and speed has been performed. Finally, to verify the design and calculation process of induction motor, we implemented the experimental set with 0.4kW 1710rpm class industrial induction motor model. The obtained thermal characteristics of experimental model confirmed that the design and power loss calculation processes are appropriate to the prediction of thermal strain in rotational machine tools.
