  • When medium and large induction motors are driven by 2-level inverters with low switching frequency, induction motors provoke deteriorated performances resulted from large torque ripples, flux ripples, and large current distortion. Model predictive torque control(MPTC) for a fast torque control of induction motors is also suffered from large torque ripples when the induction motors are fed by 2-level inverters that are based on 6 active voltage vectors with low switching frequency restricted. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new MPTC method based on both a 12 active voltage vector and an optimized duty ratio calculation. The proposed control strategy illustrates its effectiveness under the various operating conditions through simulation works.

  • Mechanical imbalances are common mechanical faults in induction motors. Vibration monitoring techniques have been widely used for the diagnosis of mechanical faults in induction motors, but electrical detection methods have been preferred in recent years. For many years, researchers have concentrated on the Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA). This paper examines the effect of mechanical imbalances to induction machine electrical parameters. Instantaneous Power Signature Analysis (IPSA) technique used to detect these faults. In the paper, a full analysis of the proposed technique is presented, and experimental results for healthy and faulty motors have been shown and discussed.

  • DC motors are widely used in industries like cement, paper manufacturing, etc., even today. Early fault identification in dc motors significantly improves its life time and reduces power consumption. Many conventional and soft computing techniques for fault identification in DC motors including a recent work using model based analysis with the help of fuzzy logic are available in literature. In this paper fuzzy logic and norm based wavelet analysis of startup transient current are proposed to identify and quantify the armature winding fault and bearing fault in DC motors, respectively. Results obtained by simulation using Matlab and Simulink are presented in this paper to validate the proposed work.

  • To reduce the size and cost of motor driving systems, several methods for driving multiple parallel-connected motors with a single inverter have been proposed. However, dual PMSMs driven by a single inverter, unlike induction motors, have a problem with instability due to system resonance caused by disturbances such as load imbalance and tolerances between two motors. To drive dual SPMSMs fed by a single inverter, this paper proposes an active damping algorithm to effectively suppress resonance by using one-sided sensorless speed control and position difference estimation. By deriving rotor position difference from d-q current differences between two motors, the proposed method is affected less by position difference estimation errors and is simpler than dual sensorless position estimation.

  • Brushless DC motors applied in many control systems because of the good respose characteristic and the easy control characteristic. The speed control of the BLDC motors is important in the systems. This paper has designed PSO-PID speed controller for the speed control of BLDC motors. The PSO algorithm optimized the parameters of the PID controller in the PSO-PID speed controller. The several methods obtained the optimal inertia weight of the PSO algorithm by comparison. The optimal inertia weight of the PSO algorithm optimized the PSO-PID speed controller for BLDC motors. This paper confirmed the performance of proposed PSO-PID speed controller through simulation results.

  • Recently, induction motors are used more widely because of their low cost and simple structure. Therefore, the importance of fault detection and isolation of induction motors significantly increases. In most case the line current is used for fault detection and isolation. But in case that an induction motor has an inverter for control, it distorts the information of faulty state included in the line current. This paper proposes a new method for fault detection and isolation of induction motors that is speed controlled by the inverter using frequency analysis of the reference current instead of the line current for fault detection and isolation.

  • Partial discharge(PD) tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stator windings in six 6.6kV motors. These tests were conducted using a conventional partial discharge detector (PDD), turbine generator analyzer(TGA) and partial discharge analyzer(PDA). Off-line PD measurements were performed on six 6.6kV motors. PD magnitudes ranged from 740 pC to 5,100 pC at the normal line-to-ground voltage. Six 6.6kV motors have been equipped with eighteen 80pF epoxy-mica couplers(one per phase) on the motor terminal boxs. The PD pulse from sensors were measured with the TGA and PDA instruments on a normally operating motors. The PDD, TGA and PDA test results showed that internal discharge was detected in voids of the groundwall insulation.

  • Linear motors can drive a linear motion without intermediate gears, screws or crank shafts. Linear motors can successfully replace ball lead screw in machine tools because they have a high velocity, acceleration and good positioning accuracy. On the other hand, linear motors emit large amounts of heat and have low efficiency. In this paper, the thermal behavior of a synchronous linear motor with high velocity and force is analyzed. To improve the thermal characteristics of the linear motor, structure of linear motor and cooler is changed. Some effects of an integrated cooler, an U-cooler and a thermal symmetrical cooler are presented.

  • Induction motors are the main driving force of electric vehicles and operated by pulse width modulation (PWM) inverters in speed control. Contrary to full-voltage operation of induction motors, inverter-fed induction motors (IFM) generates transient overvoltages up to 10 kV/us and transient overvoltages accelerate the deterioration of winding insulation. We investigated transient overvoltages produced by the operation of IFM and analyzed its peak value and dv/dt depending on power cable length and operation frequency. The experimental results showed that transient overvoltages measured at the motor terminal increased with the cable length between inverter and motor.

Linear motors can successfully replace ball lead screw in machine tools because they have a high velocity, acceleration and good positioning accuracy. On the other hand, linear motors emit large amounts of heat and have low efficiency. In this paper, heat sources of a synchronous linear motor with high velocity and force measured and analyzed.
