  • A new motion compensated frame Interpolation (MCI) algorithm by block based motion estimation (BME) is proposed. The block for the BME is composed of a large overlapped block for practical object motion estimation (ME) and a small block (which has a coinciding center with the ME-block) for the more precise motion compensated image description. Pixels in the block for the ME are sub-sampled to reduce computational complexity. The proposed method is executed with the various ME-blocks which have different size and sub-sampling ratio, and compared to the conventional method.

  • Motion Estimation/compensation(ME/MC) is one of the efficient interframe ceding techniques for its ability to reduce the high redundancy between successive frames of an image sequence. Calculating the blocking matching takes most of the encoding time. In this paper a new fast block matching algorithm(BMA) is developed for motion estimation and for reduction of the computation time to search motion vectors. The feature of the new algorithm comes from the center-biased checking concept and the trend of pixel movements. At first, Motion Vector(MV) is searched in ${\pm}$1 of search area and then the motion estimation is exploited in the rest block. The ASP and MSE of the proposed search algorithm show good performance.

  • In this paper, an efficient multi-level successive elimination algorithm using the locality in block was proposed for motion estimation. If SAD(sum of absolute difference) is calculated from large absolute difference values to small absolute difference values, SAD is increased rapidly. So, partial distortion elimination in SAD calculation can be done very early. Hence, the computations of SAD calculation can be reduced. In this paper, an efficient algorithm to calculate SAD from large absolute difference values to small absolute difference values by using the locality in block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is an efficient algorithm with 100% motion estimation accuracy for the motion estimation of motion vectors.

  • This paper proposed a new fast multi-reference frame motion estimation algorithm. The proposed algorithm reduces search areas of motion estimation using a linear relation of motion vector with distance of each reference frame. New algorithm executes full search area motion estimation in reference frame 0 and reference frame 1. After that, search areas in reference frame 2, reference frame 3 and reference frame 4 are minimized by distance of each reference frame and results of motion estimation in reference frame 0 and reference frame 1. The proposed algorithm does not use a threshold value which is obstacle of hardware implementation and processing time schedule. Also, it reduced computation quantity of multi-reference motion estimation. Hardware implementation of multi-reference frame motion estimation is possible by these features. Simulation results show that PSNR drop and bitrate increase of proposed algorithm are lower than those of previous fast multi-reference frame motion estimation algorithm The number of computation of new algorithm is reduced 52.5% and quality of result is negligible when compared with full search area motion estimation which has 5 reference frames.

  • Video FRUC (Frame Rate Up Conversion) has been a technique of great interest due to its diversified applications in consumer electronics. Most advanced FRUC algorithms adopt a motion interpolation technique to determine the motion vector field of interpolated frames. But, in some applications, it is necessary to evaluate how well the MCI (Motion Compensated Interpolation) frame is reconstructed. For this aim, this paper proposes a distortion estimation for motion compensated interpolation frame using frame-adaptive distortion estimation. The proposed method is applied for the symmetric motion estimation and compensated scheme and then analyzed by three different approaches, that is, forward estimation, backward estimation and adaptive bi-directional estimation schemes. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed bi-directional estimation method outperforms others and can be effectively applied for FRUC.

  • Most video services are transmitted in wireless networks. In a network environment, a packet of video is likely to be lost during transmission. For this reason, numerous error concealment (EC) algorithms have been proposed to combat channel errors. On the other hand, most existing algorithms cannot conceal the whole missing frame effectively. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a new Adaptive Prediction Unit-based Motion Vector Extrapolation (APMVE) algorithm to restore the entire missing frame encoded by High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). In each missing HEVC frame, it uses the prediction unit (PU) information of the previous frame to adaptively decide the size of a basic unit for error concealment and to provide a more accurate estimation for the motion vector in that basic unit than can be achieved by any other conventional method. The simulation results showed that it is highly effective and significantly outperforms other existing frame recovery methods in terms of both objective and subjective quality.

  • This paper presents a new fast motion estimation method where search ranges are determined by the probabilities of motion vector differences (MVDs), which is an adaptive/dynamic search range (ASR) method. The MVDs' distribution is investigated and its parameter is estimated by the maximum likelihood estimator. With the estimated distribution, we show that the search ranges can be efficiently restricted by a prefixed probability for MVDs. Experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed method is very similar to that of the full search algorithm in PSNR but it enables significant reduction in the computational complexity. In addition, they revealed that the proposed method determine the search ranges much more efficiently than the conventional ASR methods.

  • We propose a block motion estimation algorithm based on a statistical image feature for video sequences. The statistical feature of the reference block is obtained, then applied to select the candidate starting points (SPs) in the regular starting points pattern (SPP) by comparing the statistical feature of reference block with that of blocks which are spread ower regular SPP. The final SPs are obtained by their Mean Absolute Difference(MAD) value among the candidate SPs. Finally, one of conventional fast search algorithms, such as BRGDS, DS, and three-step search (TSS), has been applied to generate the motion vector of reference block using the final SPs as its starting points. The experimental results showed that the starting points from fine SPs were as dose as to the global minimum as we expected.

  • Motion estimation using one-bit transform and two-bit transform reduces the complexity for computation of matching error; however, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is degraded. Modified 1BT (M1BT) and modified 2BT (M2BT) have been proposed to compensate degraded PSNR by adding conditional local search. However, these algorithms require many additional search points in fast moving sequences with a block size of $16{\times}16$. This paper provides more efficient search method by preparing candidate blocks using the number of non-matching points (NNMP) than the conditional local search. With this NNMP-based search, we can easily obtain candidate blocks with small NNMP and efficiently search final motion vector. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only reduces computational complexity, but also improves PSNR on average compared with conventional search algorithm used in M1BT, M2BT and AM2BT.

  • Motion Estimation (ME) is an important part of video coding process and it takes the largest amount of computation in video compression. Half-pixel and quarter-pixel motion estimation can improve the video compression rate at the cost of higher computational complexity In this paper, we suggest a new efficient low-complexity algorithm for half-pixel and quarter pixel motion estimation. It is based on the experimental results that the sum of absolute differences(SAD) shows parabolic shape and thus can be approximated by using interpolation techniques. The sub-pixel motion vector is searched from the minimum SAD integer-pixel motion vector. The sub-pixel search direction is determined toward the neighboring pixel with the lowest SAD among 8 neighbors. Experimental results show that more than 20% reduction in computation time can be achieved without affecting the quality of video.
