  • As this study is to estimate long term resistance of cement mortars using crushed sand under chemical attacks. Besides tests have been carried out with cement mortars by river sand and crushed sand by fine sand, cement mortars mix various proportions of silica fume and fly ash(up to 15% and 50% by weight for cement) were prepared and immersed in pure water, sodium sulfate solution, magnesium sulfate solution, seawater for 28days, 90days, 180days, 365days. Test on the change in the weight and compressive strength of cement mortars according to the duration of immersion time and the content of silica fume and fly ash was performed.

  • Nitrite-Type hydrocalumite (calumite) is a material that can provied a self-corrosion inhibition function to the reinforce concrete. In this study, bisphnol A·F type epoxy-midified mortars without hardner contaning calumite is prepared with various polimer-binder ratios, calumite contents and tow types of curing condition, and tested for flexural and compressive strength tensile strength and corrosion-inhibition. As a result, in the case of wet/dry curing condition, strengths of bisphnol A·F type epoxy-modified mortars without hardener contaning calumite is inclined to decrease with increasing of polymer-binder ratio and calumite content. However, dry cured specimens are slightly improved by using bisphnol A·F type epoxy resin. Finally, regardless of polymer-binder ratios and calumite contents, corrosion-inhibition of bisphnol A·F type epoxy-modified mortars without hardener containing calumite is superior than that of unmodified mortar.

  • Structure surfaces damaged due to many causes are repaired by several special mortars. But wide studies about the permeability of these mortars were rarely conducted. In this study compressive strength test, flexural strength test and bond strength test of these mortars were conducted. And chloride ion penetration test was also conducted to explore the permeability charcteristics of selected repair mortars. This test was carried out following the standard ASTM C1202-91. Colouriemtric penetration depth can be drawn from these test results using a relationship equation between colourimetric penetration depth and charge passed which C. Andrade suggested. Diffusion coefficient can be calculated by CTH rapid method. To the end, the present study can provide a firm base for the application of repair mortars to concrete structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of biological repairing mortars on restoring the structural performance of a sewage culvert deteriorated by sulfate attack. The biological mortars were developed for protecting concrete structures exposed to sulfate attack based on the block membrane action of the bacterial glycocalyx. The diffusion coefficient of sulfate ions in the biological mortars was determined from the natural diffusion cell tests. The effect of sulfate-attack-induced concrete deterioration on the structural performance of culverts was examined by using the moment-curvature relationship predicted based on the nonlinear section lamina approach considering the sulfuric-acid-induced degradation of the structure. Typical analytical assessments showed that biological mortars were quite effective in increasing the sulfate-resistant service life of sewage culverts.

  • This study examined the potential of halophilic bacteria in reducing the chloride ion concentration within the cement mortars exposed to chloride attack. As a result of the experiment, the compressive strength of mortar with Halomonas venusta showed an equivalent performance to that of counterpart mortars without bacteria. Also, the chloride ion concentration measured in mortars including Halomonas Venusta was 71% lower than that of the counterpart mortars without bacteria.

  • Concrete structures need repairing due to various reasons such as deteriorative effects, overloading, poor quality of workmanship and design failures. Cement based repair mortars are the most widely used solutions for concrete repair applications. Various factors may affect the bond strength between concrete substrate and repair mortars. In this paper, the effects of polymer additives, strength of the concrete substrate, surface roughness, surface wetness and aging on the bond between concrete substrate and repair mortar has been investigated. Full factorial experimental design is employed to investigate the main and interaction effects of these factors on the bond strength. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) under design of experiments (DOE) in Minitab 14 Statistical Software is used for the analysis. Results showed that the interaction bond strength is higher when the application surface is wet and strength of the concrete substrate is comparatively high. According to the results obtained from the analysis, the most effective repair mortar additive in terms of bonding efficiency was styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) within the investigated polymers and test conditions. This bonding ability improvement can be attributed to the self-flowing ability, high flexural strength and comparatively low air content of SBR modified repair mortars. On the other hand, styrene acrylate rubber (SAR) modified mortars was found incompatible with the concrete substrate.

  • Epoxy resin without any hardener can harden in the presence of hydroxide ions in cement mortars and concretes at ambient temperature. The purpose of present study is to examine the hardening properties of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars by curing conditions. The hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars using diglycidyl ether of A epoxy resin are prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and subjected to initial moist/dry curing, initial steam(90℃) curing, initial steam/heat(80℃, 100℃) curing. As a result, degree of hardening of epoxy resin in initial moist/dry cured, initial steam cured and initial steam/heat(80℃) cured hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars is decreased with increasing polymer-cement ratio. However, it is markedly improved with additional dry-curing periods. On the other hand, regardless of the polymer-cement ratio and dry curing periods, degree of hardening of hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars with initial steam/heat(100℃) cure is over 95%.

  • The strength and durability of polymer-cement mortars were investigated. The specimens of polymer-cement mortar were prepared by using styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, ethylene-vinyl acetate(EVA) emulsion and polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsion with various polymer-cement ratios(5, 10, 15, 20wt%). For the evaluation of durability of polymer-cement mortars, freezing-thawing, acid resistance and heat resistance tests were conducted. With an increase of polymer-cement ratio, the frost resistance of polymer-cement mortars was greatly improved, but acid and heat resistance were deteriorated. The compressive and flexural strengths of SBR polymer-cement mortars were improved with an increase of polymer-cement ratio, whereas those of EVA and PAE polymer-cement mortars reached maximum value at polymer-cement ratio of 10wt%.

  • The biogenic corrosion of mortars adopted in sewage repair by sulfuric acid-producing bacteria was considered in this paper. Calcium aluminate cement (CAC) was known to resist microbiologically-induced corrosion significantly better than portland and blended portland cement. In this study, CAC as well portland cement mortars were tested as main binder to evaluate the corrosion resistance by the chemical immersion test. Replacement ratios of CAC were changed as 0, 20, 40, 50, 60% of OPC binder and 0, 2, 4, 6% of EVA(Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) were also adopted to increase properties of CAC repair mortars in sewage application. Setting time, compressive strength, acid resistance and adhesive strength were measured for various experiments. As a results of the experiments, the proper formulation of repair mortars was found at 40% of CAC and 4% of EVA. Finally, the CAC mortars adopted in field sewer pipe and were demonstrated to superior in adhesion and workability.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the epoxy-modified mortars and concretes without hardener having a good balance between performance and cost. In this study, the epoxy-modified and concretes without and with the hardener are prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and tested for the mechanical properties of the epoxy-modified mortars and concretes without and with the hardener. From the test results, the epoxy-modified mortars and concretes without the hardener having an excellent mechanical properties are developed at low polymer-cement ratios of 10 to 20% compared with those of conventional epoxy-modified mortars and concretes with the hardener.
