가축에서 세포유전학의 응용 (Utilization of Cytogenetics in Domestic Animals)

  • Abnormalities of structure and morphology of chromosomes concentrated with genetic materials, DNA, are directly related to phenotypical performances of animals. So, cytogenetical research in domestic animals is important to prevent congenital deformity and improve genetic performances. Especially utilities of egg transfer technique combined with cytogenetical study can be accelerated by the wide spread of the best genetic sources dependent on the micromanipulation and sexing of eggs.

Differences in mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa morphology in relation to vertical and sagittal skeletal patterns: A cone-beam computed tomography study

  • Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the following null hypothesis: there are no differences in the morphology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structures in relation to vertical and sagittal cephalometric patterns. Methods: This retrospective study was performed with 131 participants showing no TMJ symptoms. The participants were divided into Class I, II, and III groups on the basis of their sagittal cephalometric relationships and into hyperdivergent, normodivergent, and hypodivergent groups on the basis of their vertical cephalometric relationships. The following measurements were performed using cone-beam computed tomography images and compared among the groups: condylar volume, condylar size (width, length, and height), fossa size (length and height), and condyle-to-fossa joint spaces at the anterior, superior, and posterior condylar poles. Results: The null hypothesis was rejected. The Class III group showed larger values for condylar width, condylar height, and fossa height than the Class II group (p < 0.05). Condylar volume and superior joint space in the hyperdivergent group were significantly smaller than those in the other two vertical groups (p < 0.001), whereas fossa length and height were significantly larger in the hyperdivergent group than in the other groups (p < 0.01). The hypodivergent group showed a greater condylar width than the hyperdivergent group (p < 0.01). The sagittal and vertical cephalometric patterns showed statistically significant interactions for fossa length and height. Conclusions: TMJ morphology differed across diverse skeletal cephalometric patterns. The fossa length and height were affected by the interactions of the vertical and sagittal skeletal patterns.

Antifibrotic effects of sulforaphane treatment on gingival elasticity reduces orthodontic relapse after rotational tooth movement in beagle dogs

  • Objective: Increased gingival elasticity has been implicated as the cause of relapse following orthodontic rotational tooth movement and approaches to reduce relapse are limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of sulforaphane (SFN), an inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis, on gene expression in gingival fibroblasts and relapse after rotational tooth movement in beagle dogs. Methods: The lower lateral incisors of five beagle dogs were rotated. SFN or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) were injected into the supra-alveolar gingiva of the experimental and control group, respectively, and the effect of SFN on relapse tendency was evaluated. Changes in mRNA expression of extracellular matrix components associated with gingival elasticity in beagles were investigated by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Morphology and arrangement of collagen fibers were observed on Masson's trichrome staining of buccal gingival tissues of experimental and control teeth. Results: SFN reduced the amount and percentage of relapse of orthodontic rotation. It also decreased the gene expression of lysyl oxidase and increased the gene expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 1 and MMP 12, compared with DMSO control subjects. Histologically, collagen fiber bundles were arranged irregularly and were not well connected in the SFN-treated group, whereas the fibers extended in parallel and perpendicular directions toward the gingiva and alveolar bone in a more regular and well-ordered arrangement in the DMSO-treated group. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated that SFN treatment may be a promising pharmacologic approach to prevent orthodontic rotational relapse caused by increased gingival elasticity of rotated teeth in beagle dogs.

Abnormal Seedlings Emerged during Embryo Rescue and Its Remedy for Seedless Grape Breeding

  • The abnormal seedlings, a common physiological anomalies, emerged during embryo rescue severely restricted grape breeding. To enhance the efficiency of the seedless grape breeding by reducing the production of abnormal seedlings in the course of embryo rescue, we investigated the effects of genotype, media type, embryo style, pre-chilling on the deformity rate of the abnormal seedlings during embryo rescue. The abnormal seedlings were firstly classified into seven categories based on their morphology. Our results indicated that the emergence of abnormal seedlings was highly dependent on the female parent genotype. Polyembryony was advantageous to diminish the number of abnormal plantlets and the germination rate of embryo was 100%. We also found that pre-chilling treatment could reduce the number of abnormal plantlets and promote the embryo germination. The abnormal plantlets were reduced significantly by the addition of $ZnSO_4$ $10{\mu}mol{\cdot}L^{-1}$ or mashed-banana $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ to either embryo development or germination media. Transferring the abnormal seedlings onto the suitable fresh media in 4 weeks after embryo germination provided an effective way to transform them into normal seedlings.

A Morphologically Atypical Case of Atlantoaxial Rotatory Subluxation

  • A rare case of atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation occurred after pediatric cervical spine surgery performed to remove a dumbbell-shaped meningioma at the level of the C1/C2 vertebrae. This case is classified as a post-surgical atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation, but has a very rare morphology that has not previously been reported. Although there are several reports about post-surgical atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation, an important point of this case is that it might be directly related to the spinal cord surgery in C1/C2 level. On day 6 after surgery, the patient presented with the Cock Robin position, and a computed tomography scan revealed a normal type of atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation. Manual reduction was performed followed by external fixation with a neck collar. About 7 months after the first surgery, the subluxation became severe, irreducible, and assumed an atypical form where the anterior tubercle of C1 migrated to a cranial position, and the posterior tubercle of C1 and the occipital bone leaned in a caudal direction. The pathogenic process suggested deformity of the occipital condyle and bilateral C2 superior facets with atlantooccipital subluxation. A second operation for reduction and fixation was performed, and the subluxation was stabilized by posterior fixation. We encountered an unusual case of a refractory subluxation that was associated with an atypical deformity of the upper spine. The case was successfully managed by posterior fixation.

정기구학 및 역기구학을이용한하지 교정절골술 계획 생성 (Surgical Planning in Deformity Correction Osteotomies using Forward Kinematics and Inverse Kinematics)

  • 뇌성마비에서 나타나는 하지 변형은 정상 보행 및 자세 유지에 어려움을 준다. 이를 교정하기 위해 임상의는 변형 정도를 측정하여 교정 절골술 계획을 수립하고 계획된 정도만큼 절골술을 시행한다. 그러나 절골술 시행 후 원래 계획보다 더 적거나 더 많이 교정되는 상황이나 의도치 않았던 변형이 발견되는 상황이 종종 발생한다. 이러한 문제 상황들이 발생하는 이유는 절골술 계획수립 시, 기존의 방법이 하지골의 정확한 형태학적 정보를 반영하기 어렵고 하지골을 절골하여 회전 시키는 정도에 따라 최종 결과가 어떻게 나오는지 사전에 예측하는 것이 쉽지 않으며 효과적인 교정 결과를 얻을 수 있는 절골술 방법, 회전각도 등 다양한 입력 조건의 최적 조합을 찾기가 어렵기 때문이다. 본 논문은 이를 해결하기 위해 컴퓨터 그래픽스 분야의 정기구학, 역기구학 및 최적화 기법을 하지 교정 절골술에 적용하여 임상의가 최적의 절골술 계획을 수립할 수 있도록 하는 방법을 제안한다. 하지 골의 3차원 메쉬 모델을 입력으로 받아 이를 분석하여 하지 특징점을 추출하고 임상지표를 자동으로 계산하여 변형 정도를 파악하는 방법, 하지 골을 대상으로 하는 5가지 교정 절골술의 시뮬레이션을 통해 그 결과를 사전에 예측할 수 있는 방법 그리고 비선형 최적화 문제로 변환하여 최적 교정 절골술 계획을 자동으로 수립하는 방법을 제안한다. 이를 통해 하지 골 교정 절골술과 관련된 거의 모든 경우의 수를 사전에 확인해 볼 수 있어서 종래의 방법보다 훨씬 쉽고 효율적으로 절골술을 계획하고 실행할 수 있을 것이다.

The effect of fluoride-containing oral rinses on the corrosion resistance of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of commercially available fluoride-containing oral rinses on the corrosion behavior of titanium alloys, which are the main components of orthodontic miniscrews. Methods: Four commercially available oral rinses (solution A, pH 4.46/260 ppm fluoride; solution B, pH 4.41/178 ppm fluoride; solution C, pH 6.30/117 ppm fluoride; and solution D, pH 4.17/3.92 ppm fluoride) were tested on titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) circular plates, and saline was used as the control. The open-circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarization of these materials were measured. Thereafter, all samples were evaluated under a field-emission scanning electron microscope. Results: Among the tested oral rinses, except solution D, the more the fluoride content was, the greater was the corrosion potential downtrend; the corrosion resistance of the titanium alloy sample was also lowered significantly (p < 0.05). Field-emission scanning electron microscopic analysis of the surface morphology of the titanium alloy samples revealed that all samples had some defects, crevices, or pitting after exposure to the oral rinses than before treatment. In particular, the samples in solution A showed the most changes. Conclusions: Commercially available oral rinses having a high fluoride concentration and a low pH may reduce the corrosion resistance of titanium alloys used in dental appliances such as orthodontic titanium miniscrews and brackets.

A case of severe mandibular retrognathism with bilateral condylar deformities treated with Le Fort I osteotomy and two advancement genioplasty procedures

  • We report a case involving a young female patient with severe mandibular retrognathism accompanied by mandibular condylar deformity that was effectively treated with Le Fort I osteotomy and two genioplasty procedures. At 9 years and 9 months of age, she was diagnosed with Angle Class III malocclusion, a skeletal Class II jaw relationship, an anterior crossbite, congenital absence of some teeth, and a left-sided cleft lip and palate. Although the anterior crossbite and narrow maxillary arch were corrected by interceptive orthodontic treatment, severe mandibular hypogrowth resulted in unexpectedly severe mandibular retrognathism after growth completion. Moreover, bilateral condylar deformities were observed, and we suspected progressive condylar resorption (PCR). There was a high risk of further condylar resorption with mandibular advancement surgery; therefore, Le Fort I osteotomy with two genioplasty procedures was performed to achieve counterclockwise rotation of the mandible and avoid ingravescence of the condylar deformities. The total duration of active treatment was 42 months. The maxilla was impacted by 7.0 mm and 5.0 mm in the incisor and molar regions, respectively, while the pogonion was advanced by 18.0 mm. This significantly resolved both skeletal disharmony and malocclusion. Furthermore, the hyoid bone was advanced, the pharyngeal airway space was increased, and the morphology of the mandibular condyle was maintained. At the 30-month follow-up examination, the patient exhibited a satisfactory facial profile. The findings from our case suggest that severe mandibular retrognathism with condylar deformities can be effectively treated without surgical mandibular advancement, thus decreasing the risk of PCR.

소아환자의 항암치료 후 나타나는 구강 내 합병증 (Oral Complications after Antineoplastic Treatment in Pediatric Patients)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 항암 치료를 받은 후 소아환자에서 나타나는 치아의 발육장애의 유병률에 대해 조사하고, 항암 치료의 시기, 치료방법, 그리고 치료 기간에 따라 어떤 차이를 보이는 지 알아보고자 하였다. 임상 및 방사선학적 기록이 존재하는 93명의 소아암 환자에 대해 치아의 수, 치아의 형태, 치근의 형태, 치아의 발달 정도를 평가하였다. 조사된 치아의 형성장애는 전체 환자의 61.3%에서 발견되었고, 이중에는 치근의 형태이상이 31.2%로 가장 많이 관찰되었다. 6세 이후에 항암치료를 시작한 환아보다 6세 이전에 항암 치료를 시작한 환아에서 결손치(p = 0.029)와 왜소치(p = 0.003) 수가 더 많았으며, 이는 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 화학요법과 방사선요법을 병행한 경우 화학요법만을 시행한 경우보다 결손치(p = 0.030), 왜소치(p = 0.046), 그리고 치근형태이상(p = 0.009)이 더 높은 빈도로 관찰되었고, 이는 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 18개월 미만의 항암 치료 기간을 경험한 환아에 비해 18개월 이상 항암 치료를 받은 환아에서 결손치(p = 0.032), 왜소치(p = 0.011), 치근형태이상(p = 0.025), 그리고 총 치아이상(p = 0.036)의 수가 더 많았으며, 이는 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 결론적으로, 항암치료를 받은 소아환자에서 더 빠른 항암치료 개시시기, 화학 및 방사선 요법의 병행, 그리고 더 긴 항암치료 기간이 치아 형성 중의 이상소견을 증가시켰다.

The Reliability of Preoperative Simulation Surgery Planning for Distraction Osteogensis in Craniosynostosis Patients

  • Background Craniosynostosis management using distraction osteogensis represent a challenge for surgeons due to the great variability of the skull deformity even within the same etiology. The ability to apply the simulation surgery for improving the preoperative planning for distraction osteogensis could improve the results.Planning and Simulation 14 patients presented with craniosynostosis had been subjected to simulation surgery prior to real surgery. 3D CT scans was obtained upon patient admission. Adjustment of all skull position to Frankfort horizontal plane was done. 3 different distraction osteogensis plans were done for each patient according to the skull morphology. For each plane, movement for each bone segment was done according to the pre-planned distraction vectors. Also the distances of distractions were pre-determined according to the cephalic index as well as brain volume. Intraoperatively, we choose the most appropriate plan for the patient by the surgeon. At the end of distraction, 3D CT scan was obtained, and was compared to the simulation plan. Also the distance and the direction of distraction was compared to that of the plan. Accordingly, the distance was almost matching that of the simulation surgery, however the vector of distraction was not matched.Conclusion Preoperative stimulation planning for craniosynostosis patient is very valuable tool in the surgical management of craniosynostosis patients.
