Eight species of Sargassum subgenus Bactrophycus section Halochloa and Repentia were collected from the coasts of Korea: Sargassum coreanum J. Agardh, Sargassum sagamianum Yendo, Sargassum micracanthum (Kützing) Endlicher, Sargassum macrocarpum C. Agardh, Sargassum autumnale Yoshida, Sargassum siliquastrum (Mertens ex Turner) C. Agardh, Sargassum serratifolium (C. Agardh) C. Agardh, Sargassum yezoense (Yamada) Yoshida et Konno. These species were investigated on morphological variations and geographical distributions in Korea. The valuable taxonomic characters between similar species of these section were discussed with special reference to types of holdfasts, shape of main branch, leaves and vesicles.
Most commonly occurring predacious fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora showed great variation in size and shape of conidia on some media. The formation of larger conidia was recorded on beef extract and nutrient agar media. The length of conidia in Richard's YPSS, Sabouraud's, PDA and com meal agar media was of medium size while smaller conidia were produced on Czapek's, Jensen's, Martin's medium. Maximum width of conidia was recorded on YPSS medium followed by Sabouraud's medium. The average size of spores on nematode infested com meal agar medium was slightly increased than those on com meal agar medium.
Two monstrilloid copepod species belonging to the genus Monstrilla Dana are newly recorded from Korea: M. grandis Giesbrecht, 1891 and M. hamatapex Grygier and Ohtsuka, 1995. Specimens were obtained from inshore waters around the coasts of South Korea, using a light trap installed at quays and wharves overnight. Based on the Korean specimens, the two species are redescribed, with brief accounts of their affinities and morphological variabilities. Remarkable morphological discrepancies are confirmed in female leg 5 of M. grandis between type material from Southern Hemisphere and European and Asian specimens, which raise a strong doubt on their conspecificity. Korean specimens of M. hamatapex well coincide with the type specimens from Japan, except for some variations in the setal armature of leg 5 and antennules. This is the second taxonomic paper on the monstrilloid copepods in Korea, and the genus Monstrilla is newly added to Korean fauna.
Morphological variations of six Korean and one Japanese populations of Parafossarulus manchouricus were observed. Mean length of shell was 9.36mm(n=376), and mean width was 8.0mm. Average aperture length and width were 4.72 and 3.78mm, respectively. Number of whorl ranged from 3.5 to 5.25(at most 4.5)in all popuiations . Yangsoori population had no spiral line or spiral keel, but ther populations had spiral lines. Number of spiral line on their penultimate shorls ranged 4 to 14.The lips of aperture were generally thickened, except in some Chongpyong, Haman and Fukuoka populations. The most of shell was eroded in only apex part and/ or in othker sculpture, especially Yangsoori population was heavily eroded.
Morphological variations within the species of Scenedesmus in Korea, S. armatus and 2 strains of S. quadricauda were investigated. Taxonomic characters such as length of long spine, ridge, unicell-colony transformation, and colony types were compared. The length of long spine was constant, whereas the distribution of the spine varied with the age of culture. Ridge and short spine in S. armatus occurred constantly, whereas those in S. quadricauda varied with the composition of the media and age of culture. Strains CY-1 and CY-2 showed 6 different colony types in the stationary culture, whereas S. armatus formed only two types, armatus and armatus-longus types. All strains showed unicell-colony transformation. The cell became minimum when the daughter cell was released, and reached maximum at division.
Geographic variation in shell morphology of Thais clavigera $(K\"{u}ster)$ (Gastropoda: Muricidae) was investigated using samples collected from 24 sites along the Korean coast. Multivariate statistical analysis was applied to 9 morphometric and 4 categorical variables. The shells of T. clavigera were classified into two distinct morph types (Type-W and -E). Temperature and salinity of the sampling sites were significantly correlated with the incidence of morph types. Relative abundance of Type-W (thin, yellowish brown shell with triangular nodules) was positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with salinity. In contrast, relative abundance of Type-E (thick, dark purple shell with round nodules) was negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with salinity. Possible correlation between environmental factors (temperature and salinity) and morphological variations in the shells were discussed.

The aim of this study was to compare the results of morphological phenotypic examination and molecular biological method, randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) using clinical isolates from Korean patients infected with dermatophytes. A total of 44 clinical isolates have been collected by Korean Collection Medical Fungi (KCMF) and those were subjected for the RAPD analysis. The results showed that the fungal strains that have RG1 band patterns were identified as Trichophyton rubrum by the neighbour-joining analysis. Additionally, other fungal strains that have RG3 band patterns were identified as Epidermophyton floccosum and RG5 band patterns were identified as Micorsporum gypseum. Even though molecular biological method such as RAPD are not necessary, it might be useful when some strains have similar morphological characteristics or when same species has phenotypic variations. In this study, therefore, we targeted internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of fungal rDNA, performed RAPD and then compared with morphological phenotypic examination.

Three leptocephali (22.2, 22.7, 56.0 mm in total length) collected from the East/Japan Sea were identified by morphological and genetic analyses as belonging to the genus Scolecenchelys (Anguilliformes, Ophichthidae). Morphologically, the specimens were characterized by 148-158 myomeres, 10 gut swellings, dorsal fin origin above middle of the body, and 6 postanal melanophores between the anus and the caudal margin. An analysis of an 849-base pair 12S rRNA sequence of mitochondrial DNA showed that sequences are concordant with those of adult Scolecenchelys fuscogularis (genetic distance = 0.001). Furthermore total number of myomeres is consistent with the total number of vertebrae in adult S. fuscogularis. This study provides the first description of the morphological characteristics of S. fuscogularis leptocephali and their variations with size. The Korean name of S. fuscogularis is "Ga-neun-mul-baem", established by Ji et al. (2012).
This work was performed to confirm the molecular discrimination through the nrITS1 sequences among 3 taxa of Scirpus L. sensu lato (s.l.) species. S. planiculmis represented only 2 base sequence variations with S. maritimus in spite that they showed different morphological features. The nucleotide sequences of the ITS1 region from S. planiculmis were shown to have 99.1% homology with S. maritimus and 60.4% homology with S. triqueter. Although the morphology of S. planiculmis is similar with S. triqueter, molecular basis of the size and sequences on ITS1 region were shown to have distinctive differences. For divergency investigation on same sites and metapopulation, sequencing was conducted on ITS1 region with partial 5.8S and 18S regions. All plants of each species collected at the same site had identical band size pattern and sequences. Intraspecific molecular divergency was not identified in spite that these species live in different wetland sites. The ITS1 sequences described here provided a powerful genetic tool for phylogenetic studies which was difficult by morphological identification as high rate of morphological plasticity.
Boxwood is a representative ornamental shrub that is widely used in landscaping horticulture. After pruning, damaged leaves or stems of boxwoods are unavoidably vulnerable to infection by various plant pathogens. Several boxwood diseases caused by fungi, such as Volutella blight and Macrophoma leaf spot, have been reported worldwide including Republic of Korea. In this study, we isolated and identified fungal pathogens of boxwood diseases that occurred in Korea and characterized their morphological and taxonomic characteristics. Boxwood samples showing blight symptoms were collected in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and the putative fungal pathogens Pseudonectria buxi, P. foliicola, and Neofusicoccum buxi were successfully identified. Investigation of the morphological features of the field isolates, including mycelial growth and conidial morphology, and phylogenetic analysis of multiple DNA barcode loci revealed that there were some morphological and genetic variations among isolates, but all of the analyzed isolates were closely related to the corresponding reference strains. We also found that P. foliicola strains were more virulent than P. buxi, and the N. buxi strains isolated in this study were weak pathogens or saprophytes. The results of our study will contribute to the development of control strategies for boxwood diseases caused by fungi and accelerate research on the complex ecology of boxwood diseases.
