  • In this paper, we describe a cross-morpheme pronunciation variation model which is especially useful for constructing morpheme-based pronunciation lexicon to improve the performance of a Korean LVCSR. There are a lot of pronunciation variations occurring at morpheme boundaries in continuous speech. Since phonemic context together with morphological category and morpheme boundary information affect Korean pronunciation variations, we have distinguished phonological rules that can be applied to phonemes in within-morpheme and cross-morpheme. The results of 33K-morpheme Korean CSR experiments show that an absolute reduction of 1.45% in WER from the baseline performance of 18.42% WER was achieved by modeling proposed pronunciation variations with a possible multiple context-dependent pronunciation lexicon.

  • In this Experiment three wether male Matou goats (♂), all fitted with permanent rumen fistulae, were used to study the rumen degradabilities (incubation time 48h) of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), acid detergent ligin (ADL), cellulose (CEL) and hemicellulose (HC) and their contents of wheat and rice straws were determined for the different morphological fractions and segments. The results showed that the variation of different fractions for wheat and rice straw is the true resources of their nutritive value variation and the cell wall contents of wheat and rice straw are also obviously different. The rumen degradabilities of different straw fibre are significantly different (p<0.01), mean while the effect of straw variety is also significant (p<0.05). The aim was to set up a foundation for studying the rumen degradation of the roughage resources.

  • The venus clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is an aquaculture shellfish mainly distributed in an intertidal zone of East Asia including Korea, China and Japan. The morphological variation of this species is great. In fact, two of the most popular markers used in molecular evolution, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), have quite different properties, which could translate into different consequences of mutation, drift, migration and selection on patterns of geographical variation and molecular divergence. • This study was performed to provide basic information of the development and breeding of new cultivars of Hibiscus syriacus L., which have more beautiful and diverse flowers. Morphological characteristics of the flowers and leaves, and genetic variation of the flowers color of two Jeoktanshim-line cultivars, Bulsae and Pyungsung, were crossed each other. The result of the cross between Bulsae and Pyungsung are as follows: Mean flower height and width were 5.35 cm and 7.69 cm, respectively. Mean length and width of petal were 5.43 cm and 3.80 cm respectively, and mean length and width of flower pistil were 4.67 cm and 0.44 cm, respectively. The flower color of all ten individuals was the color of the Jeoktanshim-line, and Pyungsung, and all flower type were I-c type.

  • We determined the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) sequences of Nebalia koreana Song, Moreira & Min, 2012 (Leptostraca) collected from five locations in South Korea, and this represents the first genetic data of this species. The maximum intra-species variation was 1.2% within Nebalia hessleri Martin, Vetter & Cash-Clark, 1996, while inter-species variation ranged from 9.0% (N. hessleri and Nebalia gerkenae Haney & Martin, 2000) to 34.8% (N. hessleri and Nebalia pseudotroncosoi Song, Moreira & Min, 2013). This result is well agreed with the interspecific relationships among Nebalia species based on morphological characteristics. In conclusion, this study showed the usefulness of CO1 sequences as a DNA barcode within the genus Nebalia Leach, 1814.

  • The common rough woodlouse Porcellio scaber Latreille, 1804 is newly reported from South Korea with following diagnostic characteristics: the presence of distinct tubercles on body; the strongly developed lateral lobes of head; the presence of notch on tracheal field of pleopod 1 exopod; and distinctly short exopod of uropod. This species is reported to be cosmopolitan, but there were no taxonomic records of it in South Korea. All voucher specimens were collected from humid shaded areas adjacent to the eastern coast of South Korea. Organismal ecology and scanning electron microscope photographs are provided. In addition, the results of CO1 analysis of individuals representing the different color and morphological variations are provided.

  • Two land snails, Aegista chejuensis (Pilsbry and Hirase, 1908) and Plectotropis quelpartensis (Pilsbry and Hirase, 1908), are endemic to Korea and were collected from Hataedo and Jodo Islands in the Yellow Sea of South Korea, respectively. Many terrestrial snail habitats have been confirmed in Korea; however, their genetic sequences have rarely been reported. This study describes the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) sequences of two species, followed by an analysis of the genetic distance between these two species and their congeners. As a result, there was no intra-species variation in both species A. chejuensis or P. quelpartensis. However, the inter-species variation was clear (10.3-31.5%). We provide photographs and a brief diagnosis for morphological verification.

  • Fish eggs and larvae were collected in July and November of 2013 and January and May of 2014 to determine seasonal variation in the species composition of ichtyoplankton. Samples were classified based on morphological characteristics. Fish eggs were identified as belonging to five taxa; the most dominant species of fish eggs was Engraulis japonicus (62.05%) followed by Sardinops melanostictus (21.02%) and Leiognathus nuchalis (13.71%). These three species accounted for 96.8% of the total number of fish eggs collected. Larvae of 17 species in six families, and six orders were collected. The most dominant species of fish larvae was E. japonicus (51.79%), followed by L. nuchalis (12.59%) and Omobranchus elegans (12.08%). These three species accounted for 76.46% of the total number of larvae collected. Jinhae Bay was identified as a major spawning and nursery ground for fish species inhabiting in the south coast of Korea, such as E. japonicus, L. nuchalis, S. melanostictus, and Omobranchus elegans. Therefore, management of marine fish resources in the South Sea should necessarily include the ecological management of Jinhae Bay.
