  • Pagurus is the most diverse hermit crab genus in Korea. In this study, the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA of 24 individuals from four Korean Pagurus species (i.e., 7 Pagurus brachiomastus, 8 P. proximus, 8 P. simulans, and 1 P. rectidactylus) were sequenced and analyzed. No genetic difference was found between the COI and 16S rRNA sequences of P. brachiomastus and P. simulans, and the COI sequences of P. rectidactylus and P. quinquelineatus (comparative species from NCBI). Considering the morphological and ecological characteristics together, we assume that P. simulans and P. rectidactylus are subspecies of P. brachiomastus and P. quinquelineatus, respectively. This study should facilitate further research on the taxonomic status of these species.

  • In this study, we propose a novel method to segment an individual tooth region in a true color image. The difference of the intensity in RGB is initially extracted and subsequent morphological reconstruction is applied to minimize the spurious segmentation regions. Multiple seeds in the tooth regions are chosen by searching regional minima and a Sobel-mask edge operations is performed to apply MCWA(Marker-Controlled Watershed Algorithm). As the results of applying MCWA transform for our proposed tooth segmentation algorithm, the individual tooth region can be resolved in a CCD tooth color image.

  • The performance of three tubular materials (C-90, L-80, and N-80) was evaluated in a synthetic brine inoculated with sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the absence and presence of biocides. A flow loop was used in the evaluation of the three alloys. Morphological examination of the alloy surfaces after exposure to SRB and after biocide treatment was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine the nature of any localized corrosion. The SE images of the coupon samples showed a marked difference between the biocide-treated and untreated samples. Small pits were observed on the ultrasonically cleaned surfaces of the three alloys after exposure to SRB. The biocide treatment reduced the number of SRB on the surfaces of the alloys. Results indicated that C-90 and L-80 alloys exhibited better MIC resistance than N-80 under the conditions used in this study.

  • We propose an image change detection algorithm implemented on sensor nodes of the ubiquitous sensor network(USN). The proposed algorithm was designed for the robust detection of image changes regardless of the continuously changing ambient illumination environment. Morphological lowpass filter was used for estimating the illumination component in order to reduce computational burden instead of the existing Gaussian lowpass filter. The decision of the change detection is based on the result of threshold of difference image between two consecutive images. We also propose a new thresholding method using precalculated histogram information. The proposed algorithm was implemented on the MSP430 16bit microprocessor.

  • We present the structural parameters of ~ 910 dwarf elliptical-like galaxies in the local universe ($z{\lesssim}0.01$) derived from the r-band images of the Sloan Digital SKy Survey (SDSS). We examine the dependence of structural parameters on the morphological types (dS0, dE, dEbc, dSph, and dEblue) and the environment. There is not much difference in the structural parameters among the five subtypes but the mean surface brightness within the effective radius (<${\mu}e$>) of dSph galaxies is clearly different from that of other subtypes. The frequency of disk features such as spiral arm, bar, lens, and rings strongly depends on the morphology of dwarf elliptical-like galaxies with no disk features in dSph galaxies. The absence of disk features and the low surface brightness of dSph galaxies are thought to be closely related to their low mass which leads to different evolution from other subtypes of dwarf elliptical-like galaxies. • Objective : To characterize the importance of the vertical angle of the sacral curvature (VASC) in lumbar disc herniations. Methods : Morphological data derived from lumbar sagittal MRI imaging. The statistical significance of the findings are discussed. The angles of 60 female patients with lumbar disc herniations (LDH) were compared with the 34 female patients without LDH. Results : 128 of the 185 patients met our inclusion criteria. The vertical angle of sacral curvature is statistically significantly bigger in females with lumbar disc herniations when compared to subjects in control group, 28.32 and 25.4, respectively. (p=0.034<0.05). Same difference was not seen in males. Conclusion : The vertical angle of sagittal sacral curvature may be another risk factor in females with lumbar disc herniations.

  • Graphene has attracted an increasing attention due to its extraordinary electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties. Especially, the two dimensional (2D) sheet of graphene with an extremely high surface to volume ratio has a great potential in the preparation of multifunctional nanomaterials, as 2D supports to host metal nanoparticles (NPs). Copper oxide is widely used in various areas as antifouling paint, p-type semiconductor, dry cell batteries, and catalysts. Although the copper oxide(II) has been well known for efficient catalyst in C-N cross-coupling reaction, copper oxide(I) has not been highlighted. In this research, CuO and Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on the surface of grapehene oxide (GO) have been synthesized by impregnation method and their morphological and electronic structures have been systemically investigated using TEM, XRD, and XAFS. We demonstrate that both CuO and Cu2O on graphene presents efficient catalytic performance toward C-N cross coupling reaction. The detailed structural difference between CuO and Cu2O NPs and their effect on catalytic performance are discussed.

  • The effects of shot peening pressure on electrochemical and surface morphological characteristics of ALBC3 alloy were investigated in this work. The surface hardness of ALBC3 alloy was improved by shot peening process under all shot peening pressures between 2 and 5 bar, and the hight value of surface hardness was observed to be about 420 Hv at 4 bar of the shot peening pressure. The shot peened surface presented very rough surface due to shot ball collision. The result of anodic potentiodynamic polarization in seawater revealed that there is no significant difference between the shot peened and non-shot peened specimen in terms of corrosion characteristics. Therefore, the optimum projection pressure is determined to be 4 bar.

  • This study is about the five species of the genus Thalictrum growing abundantly in South Korea. Dried roots of plants; T. aquilegifolium var. japonica, T. simplex var. affine, T. actaefolium, T. tuberiferum were compared by morphological observation and screening test on the ingredient extracted by methanol, ether etc.. The experiments by thin-layer chromatography was at tempted to find out the similarity and the difference among them. In conclusion, the author found that: 1) A special component similar to coumarin was found under UV-ray from T. actaefolium. 2) By thin-layer chromatography, they show the corresponding spot supposed to be that of berberine and magnoflorine according to the $T_{ABLE}\;IV$. Therefore it is worthwhile considering that Thalictrum species would be a substitution for Epimedium species used as a tonic. 3) Thalictrum species has resemblance of ingredient and chemotaxonomy gives more help to classify them than the morphology.

  • This experiment was carried out to identify the chromosomes of silkie. It was many difference from other breeds in morphology and characteristics. In this experiment, chromosomal analysis was used early embryos. In aspect of morphological chromosomes, chromosomal size and shape are similar to other breeds. The chromosomes of silkie were shown to morphlogy as follows. They were identified that chromosome #l and #2 were grouped as submentacentric, #3, #5 and #6 were telocentric #4 and #7 were acrocentric and #8 was metacentric chromosome. Zㆍsex chromosome was shown 5th, W-sex chromosome was 8th to 9th and they were metacentric chromosome, respectively. Each chromosome through the G-banding was shown the 3 dark bands in 1 p2, distinct light band in 1p1, dark band in 2p2, broad light band in 3pl, dark band from centromere and distal part in 4th chromosome and dark band in 5pl. Z-sex chromosome was shown dark at p-arm distal part.
