  • The effect of La2O3 addition on the crystalline phase, microstructure, and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 has been studied as a function of the amounts of La2O3. 0.3 mol% TiO2-excess BaTiO3 powder was synthesized by solid-state reaction, and then the powder compacts with various amounts of La2O3 were sintered at 1250℃ for 2 hours. Room temperature XRD showed changes in the lattice parameters and a decrease of tetragonality (c/a) as the amounts of La2O3 increased. It can be explained that the phase transition from tetragonal to cubic phase occurred because La3+ replaced Ba2+ site, which increased the instability of the tetragonal phase. As La2O3 was added over 0.1 mol%, the critical driving force for growth (Δgc) increased over maximum driving force (Δgmax). As the result, the grain size decreased with La2O3 addition. Dielectric constant decreased as the amounts of La2O3 increased, which was analyzed with crystal structure and microstructure.

  • Background : Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome are known to have high long-term mortality compared to healthy subjects because of their cardiovascular dysfunction. The observation of hemodynamic changes by obstructive apneas is helpful when attempting to understand the pathophysiological mechanism of the development of cardiovascular dysfunction in those patients. Therefore, we studied the changes in cardiovascular function with an animal model and tried to obtain the basic data for an ideal experimental model (this phrase is unclear), a requirement for a more advanced study. Methods : Sixteen anesthetized dogs with ${\alpha}$-chloralose delete were divided into two groups : 8 dogs of room air breathing group and 8 dogs of oxygen breathing group. We measured $PaO_2$, $PaCO_2$, heart rate, cardiac output, mean femoral artery pressure, and mean pulmonary artery pressure at specified times during the apnea-breathing cycle before endotracheal tube occlusion (baseline), 25 seconds after endotracheal tube occlusion (apneic period), 10 seconds (early phase of postapneic period, EPA) and 25 seconds (late phase of postapneic period, LPA) after spontaneous breathing. Results : In room air breathing group, the heart rate significantly decreased during the apneic period compared to that at baseline (P<0.01) and increased at EPA and LPA compared to that during the apneic period (P<0.01). But, the heart rate showed no significant changes during apneic and postapneic periods in the oxygen breathing group. Cardiac output tended to decrease during apneic period compared to that at baseline, but was statistically significant. Cardiac output significantly decreased at LP A compared to at baseline (P<0.01). Mean femoral artery pressure was significantly decreased at during apneic period compared to that at baseline (P<0.05). Conclusion : Through this experiment, we were partially able to understand the changes of cardiovascular function indirectly, but delete new experimental animal model displaying physiological mechanism close to natural sleep should be established, and the advanced study in the changes of cardiovascular function and their causes should be continued.

  • In long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to be made up optical fiber sensors, resonance coupling occurs between the forward-propagating core mode and cladding modes at the wavelength that satisfy the Phase matching condition. The resonance wavelength and the coupling strength depends strongly on the external environment like temperature, strain, and ambient index. These characteristics can be utilized for various applications as optical fiber sensors. fabrication of optical fiber gratings is typically based on the photosensitivity effect, i.e. the permanent change of the refractive index upon irradiation of the UV beam, and therefore, fabrication of the optical fiber with high phososensitivity is an important part of the research on optical fiber gratings. In this work, we measured the effort of to-doping of boron on the index difference between the core and cladding of the optical fiber and the sensitivity of the LPFC to the temperature and bending changes. We observed that the index difference between the core and the cladding decreased by $(1.69{\times}10^{-4}/SCCM)$ and the temperature sensitivity of the resonance wavelength shirt decreased by $(0.01145nm/^{\circ}C/SCCM)$. The dependence or the bending-induced changes or the transmission characteristics of LPFG on the tore-cladding index difference was investigated experimentally. The measurement results indicate that the bending sensitivity increases as the index difference decreases.

  • The activity changes and biochemical properties of ${\beta}$-gal in tomato fruits during ripening were investigated. The total activity was increased during ripening and three isoenzymes (${\beta}$-gal I, II and III) were purified through DEAE Sephadex A-50 and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. The activities of ${\beta}$gal isoenzymes (${\beta}$-gal I, II and III) during ripening were 69.8, 31.8 and 170.0 units in mature green phase, while those were 48.7, 88.4 and 136.8 units in Red phase, respectively. As the ripening proceeded the activities of ${\beta}$-gal I and III were some what decreased but the activity of ${\beta}$-gal II was incresed more than 2.8 fold. The optimum pH of ${\beta}$-gal I, II and III were 3.9, 4.2 and 3.9 and the optimum temperature of those were $60^{\circ}C$, $56^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. All isoenzymes were stable at pH 3.6~6.0 and lost their activity about 50% when it heated at $55^{\circ}C$ for 5 minute. $Mg^{{+}{+}}$-activated the three isoenzymes but $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ and SDS inhibited about 30~40%. $Hg^{{+}{+}}$ inhibited completely. The km value of ${\beta}$-gal I, II and III was 0.36mM, 0.63mM and 0.45mM, reaction rate was rapidly increased until the concentration of substrate was $6.0{\times}10^{-5}M$.

  • To investigate the changes in the responses of vestibular neurons with time during vestibular compensation, the resting activity and dynamic responses of type I and II neurons in the medial vestibular nuclei to sinusoidal angular acceleration were recorded following unilateral labyrinthectomy (ULX) in Sprague-Dawley rats. The unitary extracellular neuronal activity was recorded from the bilateral medial vestibular nuclei with stainless steel microelectrodes of $3{\sim}5\;M{\Omega}$ before ULX, and 6, 24, 48, 72 hours, and 1 week after ULX under pentobarbital sodium anesthesia (30 mg/kg, i.p.). Gain (spikes/s/deg/s) and phase (in degrees) were determined from the neuronal activity induced by sinusoidal head rotation with 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 Hz. The mean resting activity before ULX was $16.7{\pm}8.6$ spikes/s in type I neurons $(n=67,\;M{\pm}SD)$ and $14.5{\pm}8.4$ spikes/s in type II neurons (n=43). The activities of ipsilateral type I and contralateral type II neurons to the lesion side decreased markedly till 24 hr post-op, and a significant difference between ipsilateral and contralateral type I neurons sustained till 24 hr post-op. The gain at 4 different frequencies of sinusoidal rotation was depressed in all neurons till 6 or 24 hr post-op and then increased with time. The rate of decrease in gain was more prominent in ipsilateral type I and contralateral type II neurons immediately after ULX. Although the gain of those neurons increased gradually after 24 hours, it remained below normal levels. The phase was significantly advanced in all neurons following ULX. These results suggest that a depression of activities in ipsilateral type I and contralateral type II neurons is closely related with the occurrence of vestibular symptoms and restoration of activities in those neurons ameliorates the vestibular symptoms.

  • The comprehensive tests on unsaturated weathered granite soils are carried out to obtain the soil-water characteristic curve that is the one of the essential requisites to study the unsaturated soil. The weathered granite soils were obtained at Palgong mountain in Daegu. The existing test results have been carried out without overburden pressures and volume changes. In this study, the volumetric pressure plate extractor is improved to consider two factors such as overburden pressure and volume change. The applied overburden pressures were 0, 25, 50, 75, 100kPa and volume changes were measured at each phase. he results of this study are summarized as follows: As the overburden pressure increases, the volumetric water content decreases at the same matric suction and the air entry value increases and gradient of curve at the transition zone and the size of the hysteresis loops decreases. As the overburden pressure increases, the degree of saturation increases at the same matric suction and degree of saturation of the wetting curve is higher than that of dry curve. The SWCC with volume changes are slightly larger than those without volume changes. The general equation proposed by Fredlund & Xing(1994) to fit the experimental result of the SWCC indicates good agreement. The empirical parameters a, n, m as overburden pressure show similar inclination as the existing results.

  • This paper investigated the effects of wind stress forcing in the western North Pacific on ENSO decadal change before and after the late 1970s. The SVD analysis of SODA data shows that a positive wind stress curl is dominant in the western North Pacific at the ENSO mature phase, which leads to the ENSO phase change by discharge/recharge heat contents in the equatorial Pacific. Before the late 1970s, the wind stress curl in the western North Pacific was strong. This strong wind forcing that is associated with the fast discharge of heat contents in the equator led to the short period and the weak intensity of ENSO occurred during the 1960-1970. On the other hand, after the late 1970s the relatively weak wind stress curl was accompanied with the long period and the strong intensity of ENSO. The simple coupled model experiments also confirm that the amplitude and dominant period of ENSO decrease when the wind stress curl in the western North Pacific projects more strongly into the ocean at the TNSO mature phase. Our results support that the changes in the behavior of ENSO after the late 1970s are associated with the wind stress variation in the western North Pacific.

  • An optical current sensor device that measures electric current by the principle of the Faraday effect was designed and fabricated. The polarization-rotated reflection interferometer and the quadrature phase interferometer were introduced so as to improve the operational stability. Complex structures containing diverse optical components were integrated in a polymeric optical integrated circuit and manufactured in a small size. This structure allows sensing operation without extra bias feedback control, and reduces the phase change due to environmental temperature changes and vibration. However, the Verdet constant, which determines the Faraday effect, still exhibits an inherent temperature dependence. In this work, we tried to eliminate the residual temperature dependence of the optical current sensor based on polarization-rotated reflection interferometry. By varying the length of the fiber-optic wave plate, which is one of the optical components of the interferometer, we could compensate for the temperature dependence of the Verdet constant. The proposed optical current sensor exhibited measurement errors maintained within 0.2% over a temperature range, from 25℃ to 85℃.

  • This study compared the effect of injectable combinations of anesthetics on each of the fluorescein angiographic phases in order to determine the most useful anesthetic combination for the procedure. Acepromazineketamine (AK), xylazine-ketamine (XK), diazepam-ketamine (DK) and zolazepam-tiletamine (ZT) group were administered randomly to 8 dogs with a two-week interval between different combination doses. The vital signs including the heart rate and arterial pressure were measured before anesthesia and every five minutes during anesthesia. Serial angiographic images were obtained after injecting a sodium fluorescein dye (25 mg/kg) and the onset time of arterial phase (AP), arteriovenous phase (AVP), early venous phase (EVP) and late venous phases (LVP) were recorded. The onset time of the AP, AVP and EVP were significantly slower in the AK and XK groups than in the DK and ZT groups. The total duration of the AP and AVP in the AK group was significantly longer than those in the ZT group. The heart rates were significantly higher in the DK and ZT groups. The arterial pressure was significantly higher in the AK and XK groups (p<0.05). There were significant differences in each angiographic onset time and duration depending on the changes in the heart rates and arterial pressure. The AK and XK groups showed a long angiographic duration allowing an accurate evaluation. Overall, it is believed that AK and XK are more useful for performing fluorescein retinal angiography than DK and ZT.

  • Objective: To prospectively investigate the influence of the menstrual cycle on the background parenchymal signal (BPS) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of the breast on diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) in healthy premenopausal women. Materials and Methods: Seven healthy premenopausal women (median age, 37 years; range, 33-49 years) with regular menstrual cycles participated in this study. DW-MRI was performed during each of the four phases of the menstrual cycle (four examinations in total). Three radiologists independently assessed the BPS visual grade on images with b-values of 800 sec/mm2 (b800), 1200 sec/mm2 (b1200), and a synthetic 1500 sec/mm2 (sb1500). Additionally, one radiologist conducted a quantitative analysis to measure the BPS volume (%) and ADC values of the BPS (ADCBPS) and fibroglandular tissue (ADCFGT). Changes in the visual grade, BPS volume (%), ADCBPS, and ADCFGT during the menstrual cycle were descriptively analyzed. Results: The visual grade of BPS in seven women varied from mild to marked on b800 and from minimal to moderate on b1200 and sb1500. As the b-value increased, the visual grade of BPS decreased. On b800 and sb1500, two of the seven volunteers showed the highest visual grade in the early follicular phase (EFP). On b1200, three of the seven volunteers showed the highest visual grades in EFP. The BPS volume (%) on b800 and b1200 showed the highest value in three of the six volunteers with dense breasts in EFP. Three of the seven volunteers showed the lowest ADCBPS in the EFP. Four of the seven volunteers showed the highest ADCBPS in the early luteal phase (ELP) and the lowest ADCFGT in the late follicular phase (LFP). Conclusion: Most volunteers did not exhibit specific BPS patterns during their menstrual cycles. However, the highest BPS and lowest ADCBPS were more frequently observed in EFP than in the other menstrual cycle phases, whereas the highest ADCBPS was more common in ELP. The lowest ADCFGT was more frequent in LFP.
