  • Microprous polyethylene (PE) membranes are widely used as lithium-ion battery separators. A separator having higher meltdown temperature than PE separator is still required for useful safety feature at a high temperature. To enhance meltdown temperature of PE separator, it was coated with polymers synthesized from bis-GMA derivatives by radical polymerization. Polymer was not formed when bis-GMA monomer having a high viscosity was used, while polymers were formed when bis-GMA derivatives having a low viscosity were used. When the separator was coated with polymer synthesized from reaction mixture containing proper amount of bis-GMA derivative, its meltdown temperature were increased up to $160^{\circ}C$ without reduction in the air permeability.

  • Poly(urethaneethyl acrylate) hybrid emulsions were synthesized to improve their thermomechanical and solvent resistance properties. In the synthesis, dimethylol propionic acid was used to impart hydrophilicity to the hybrid polymers, and ethyl acrylate monomer was added to the polyurethane prepolymer after neutralization with triethylamine. After dispersion of the neutralized prepolymer, chain extension was carried out with ethylene diamine. Consequently, poly(urethaneethyl acrylate) hybrid emulsion was prepared via soap free emulsion polymerization of ethyl acrylate with reduction-oxidation initiator couple of t-butyl hydroperoxide/sodium bisulfite at $50^{\circ}C$. Tehsile strength, 100% modulus, elongation, and solvent-resistance properties of the hybrid emulsion were measured and compared with those of polyurethane homopolymer, poly(ethyl acrylate) homopolymer, and simple blended samples.

  • In comparison with thermosetting rubber, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) has various advantages such as simple processing, short cycle time and recycling of scrap. These advantages can lead to development of the high value-added rubber products due to reduction of the waste material, manufacturing cost and the defected product. This article involves a dynamic vulcanization method for EPDM/polypropylene blend, and the manufacturing of a fixed glass weather-strip by glass insert molding method using the blend. In order to investigate mechanical properties of the product, tensile strength, elongation, hardness and specific gravity were measured. Also morphological study was carried out using SEM. Developments of an efficient system of production and automatic process by molding of TPE and glass simultaneously are expected.

  • In preparative anti-corrosive coating experiments, polyaniline was obtained by reacting an oxidizing agent with the monomer aniline. Further, the primer coating was prepared using a variety of widely-used materials such as urethane resin. For the top coating, epoxy resin and acrylic urethane resin were used. Characteristics of the coatings were assessed according to KS and ASTM specifications, and the structure of the polyaniline was characterized using FT-IR and TGA. For analysis of anti-corrosive properties in salt-spray experiments, measurements of the oxidation state of iron and surface atomic analysis were conducted using XPS and SEM-EDX. Unlike general anti-corrosive coatings which exhibit anti-corrosive effects only as a primer coating, the anti-corrosive coatings using polyaniline as the anti-corrosive pigment showed a marked synergistic effect with the top coatings. In other words, the top coatings not only produce a fine view effect, but also increase, through interaction with the primer coatings, the resistance to diffusion of corrosive factors from the external environment. It was also found that, unlike the heavy metal oxide-forming layer of the passive barrier alone, the polyaniline anti-corrosive pigment oxidized iron at the interface with the iron substrate to form a passive barrier in the oxidic layer, and itself formed a potential barrier layer with anti-corrosive factors from the external environment. Although the passive layer was damaged, the damaged area did not become completely oxidized iron; on the contrary, it showed a tendency to reduction. This can be interpreted such that a passive layer is formed again on the damaged area, and that at the same time there is a tendency to self-healing.

  • Bi metal deposited on $Bi_2MoO_6$ composite photocatalysts have been successfully synthesized via a simple reduction method at room temperature with using $NaBH_4$ as the reducing agent. The photocatalytic activity of the composite was evaluated by degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and bisphenol A (BPA) solution under visible light. The rate constant of $Bi/Bi_2MoO_6$ composite to RhB is 10.8 times that of $Bi_2MoO_6$, and the degradation rate constant of BPA is 6.9 times of that of $Bi_2MoO_6$. Nitrogen absorption-desorption isotherm proved that the increase of specific surface area is one of the reasons for the improvement of photocatalytic degradation activity of $Bi/Bi_2MoO_6$ composites. The higher charge transfer efficiency of $Bi/Bi_2MoO_6$ is found through the characterization of the photocurrent and impedance, which are attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect produced by the introduction of the metal Bi monomer in the composite. Free radical capture experiments proved that cavitation is the main active species. Based on the above conclusions, a possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation is proposed.

  • To use the filter materials for reduction of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke, the bead type cation and anion exchangers were synthesized by the suspension polymerization of GMA and DVB followed by the subsequent functionalization with sodium sulfite and diethylamine, respectively. FT-IR/ATR was used to characterize functionalized copolymer formation by sulfonation and amination, and the morphology change of ion exchangers according to the adsorption of cigarette mainstream smoke were observed by SEM. Ion exchange capacity, functionalization yield and adsorption properties of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke were investigated. The highest functionalization yields and ion exchange capacity were obtained at 5 wt% DVB content in co-monomer. The adsorption amount of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke of anion exchanger was higher than that of cation exchanger because of its electron delocalization in carbonyl group. The adsorption efficiency was increased in the presence of moisture. This results indicated that the anion exchanger was applicable for cigarette filter material because of its large ion exchange capacity and rapid ion exchange reaction.

  • To study the effects of substances in paeonia seeds (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) on lipid metabolism, crude methanol extract and secondary ether-soluble fraction out of defatted methanol extract and trans-resveratrol were prepared from the seeds and added to 0.5% (w/w) cholesterol diets for rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 120$\pm$11 g were divided into six experimental groups: control group with no extra supplement, 0.1% (MP1) and 0.2% methanol extract (MP2) supplemented groups, 0.05% (EP1) and 0.1% ether-soluble fraction (EP2) supplemented groups and 0.02% resveratrol supplemented group. Experimental diets were fed ad libitum to the rats for 3 weeks. Body weight gains and food efficiencies were not different among the six experimental groups. Relative liver weights were lower in EP2 group compared to those in control group, but serum GOT and GPT levels of paeonia seed groups including trans-resveratrol group were not different from those of the control group. Serum total cholesterol levels reduced in EP2 and resveratrol groups but HDL-/total cholesterol ratios significantly increased in the four paeonia groups except EP1 group compared with the control group and serum triglyceride level lowered only in EP2 group than that of the control. However, liver cholesterol levels lowered in the five paeonia groups but triglyceride level lowered in MP2, EP1, EP2 groups than that of the control group. Fecal cholesterol excretion significantly increased in MP2, EP1, and EP2 groups than that of the control group, but bile acid excretions were not changed except that a reduction in EP2 group. These results suggest that paeonia seeds contain substances improving serum lipid status mostly via HDL pathway and resveratrol as monomer is one of the effective components but others including resveratrol oligmer are involved in the lipid improving effect.

  • Generally, polymer mortar made with unsaturated polyester(UP) resin has a high curing shrinkage. This is an inadequate as repair material and construction products that have been widely used for years recently. To overcome these problems, polymer researchers and engineers have used shrinkage-reducing additives, which are usually specific thermoplastic polymers. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of shrinkage-reducing additive on the curing shrinkage and strengths of UP mortar. UP mortars are prepared with expanded polystyrene(EPS) ratio in styrene monomer(SM), (EPS/PS, PS=EPS+SM), and the ratio of total polystyrene resin(PS) to UP resin, (PS/UP). And it is tested for viscosity of UP resin, slump-flow, working life, flexural and compressive strengths, and curing shrinkage tests. From the test results, viscosity of resin for UP mortar increases with increasing PS content. Curing shrinkage of UP mortar is considerably smaller than that of plain UP mortar, nevertheless, reduction in the strengths is not recognized according to adding PS resin. In this study, we can obtain the optimum mix proportions of UP mortar using PS resin which made of waste expanded polystyrene.

  • Three amorphous silicas and SBA-15 were employed as supports, which were capable of confining ionic liquid (IL) and metallocene in the nanopore. Ionic liquid functionalized silica was prepared by the interaction between the chloride anions of 1,3-bis(cyanomethyl)imidazolium chloride and the surface OH groups. Metallocene and methylaluminoxane (MAO) were subsequently immobilized on the ionic liquid functionalized silica for ethylene polymerization. The metallocene supported on ionic liquid functionalized XPO-2412 and XPO-2410 having a larger pore diameter compared to SBA-15 showed higher activity than that of using supported catalyst without ionic liquid functionalization. However, the activity of metallocene supported on SBA-15 decreased after ionic liquid functionalization, suggesting that the diffusion of ethylene monomer and cocatalyst to the active site of nanopore was restricted during ethylene polymerization. This could be resulted from significant reduction of the pore diameter due to the immobilization of ionic liquid and $(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ and MAO. The effect on polymerization activity in accordance with the concentration of hydroxyl groups on the surface was also investigated. The polymerization activity increased as the concentration of hydroxyl groups on amorphous silica increased. The polymerization activities of metallocene supported on silica showed the similar trend after ionic liquid functionalization.

  • ${\beta}-Cyclodextrin\;({\beta}-CD)$ polymers were prepared using epichlorohydrin as a cross linking agent. The polymers were separated into ${\beta}-CD$ soluble polymer $({\beta}-CD\;SP)$ and ${\beta}-CD$ insoluble polymer $({\beta}-CD\;ISP)$ on a 10,000 molecular weight cut-off membrane (YM 10). Optimum separation conditions in the YM 10 were: transmembrane pressure 51.7 kPa, separation temperature $35^{\circ}C$, and volume concentration ratio 10. The flux was $0.025\;mL/cm^{2}/min$ under the optimum conditions. Gel permeation chromatography indicated that ${\beta}-CD\;SP\;and\;{\beta}-CD\;ISP$ had a degree of polymerization of $2{\sim}8$ and over 10, respectively. The formation of an inclusion complex with hydrophobic compounds such as 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene, methyl red, and naringin was compared among ${\beta}-CD,\;{\beta}-CD\;SP\;and\;{\beta}-CD\;ISP$. The molar absorptivity for the two chromatic compounds was increased and the absorption peak was shifted in the presence of ${\beta}-CD$ polymers. Naringin, the principal flavonoid bitter tasting component of citrus fruit, had a low water solubility. The solubility of naringin was increased through the formation of an inclusion complex with ${\beta}-CD$ polymers. There was no significant difference in the formation of an inclusion complex between ${\beta}-CD\;SP\;and\;{\beta}-CD\;ISP$. Reduction of the bitter components from citrus products was shown to be possible when employing ${\beta}-CD\;SP$, while the usage of ${\beta}-CD$ monomer has been limited due to the low water solubility.
