The present study aims at establishing the design procedure of regenerative pumps. It is based on the new momentum exchange theory proposed in Yoo, Park and Chung. Salient feature of the present design procedure is that it does not require input of any kinds of empirical design data. Using the design procedure, a prototype regenerative pump has been designed and manufactured to confirm its validity. Comparison between the predicted performance and the experimental measurement reveals that the prototype pump has its maximum efficiency at the design flow rate and that the proposed performance analysis method satisfactorily predicts the machine performance.

o What is the flux \ulcorner Flux is the transfer of a quantity per unit area per unit time. The quantities are mass, heat, moisture, momentum and pollutant in micrometeorology. Kinematic flux (Fluid). The reduction in wind speed due to frictional drag transfers momentum from the atmosphere to the surface, creating turbulence that mixes the air and transports heat and water from the surface into the lower atmosphere. In many applications, piezoelectric motor has been used in the areas where excellent controllability, fine position resolution are required or magnetic field noise should be eliminated. However the piezoelectric motor has two major demerits. One is difficulty in maintaining vibration amplitude constantly with temperature rise and wear, and the other is heat generation induced by dielectric and mechanical loss. In this thesis, piezoelectric motor to overcome these problems is proposed. And proposed piezoelectric motor is operated using momentum exchange between bimorph and rotor. To maximize steady state velocity and static torque of proposed motor, the guideline is established using two bimorph models. Then the guideline is partially proved by comparison between simulation and experiment. There was no heat generation in the few hours of experiments.
The formation mechanism of the vortex streets in the lee of the mountain Is Investigated by a three-dimensional numerical model. The model is based upon the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations in which the vertical turbulent momentum flux is estimated by a turbulence parameterization scheme, but the horizontal viscosity is assumed to be constant. The results show that Karman vortex streets can form even without surface friction in a constant ambient flow with uniform stratification. The vortex formation is related to breaking of the mountain wave, which depends on the Froude number (Fr). In the case of a three-dimensional bell-shaped mountain, the wave breaking occurs when Fr is less than about 0.8, while a barman vortex forms when Fr is less than about 0.22. Vortex formation also depends on Reynolds number, which is estimated from the horizontal diffusivity. The vortex formation can be explained by the wave saturation theory given by Lindzen (1981) with some modification. Simulations in this study show that in the case of Karman vortex formation the momentum flux in the lower level is much larger than the saturated momentum flux, whereas it is almost equal to the saturated momentum at the upper levels as expected from the saturation theory. As a result, large flux divergence is produced in the lower layer, the mean flow is decelerated behind the mountain, and the horizontal wind shear forms between unmodified ambient wind. The momentum exchange between the mean flow and the mountain wave is produced by the turbulence within a breaking wave. From the result, well developed vortices like Karman vortex can be formed. . The results of the momentum budget calculated by the hydrostatic model are almost the same as nonhydrostatic results as long as horizontal scale of the mountain is 10 km. A well developed barman vortex similar to the hydrostatic one was simulated in the nonhydrostatic case. Therefore, we conclude that the hydrostatic assumption is adequate to investigate the origin of the Km8n vortex from the viewpoint of wave breaking.

Recently, it has been widely recognized that coastal vegetations may have great value in supporting fisheries, protecting from wave attack, stabilizing the sea bed and maintaining good scenery. Hydrodynamic factors play a major role in the functions of water quality and ecosystems. However, the studies on physical and numerical process of wave propagation are few and far behind compared to those on the hydrodynamic roles of coastal vegetations. In general, Vegetation flourishing along the coastal areas attenuates the incident waves, through momentum exchange between stagnated water mass in the vegetated area and rapid mass in the un-vegetated area. This study develops a numerical model for describing the wave attenuation rate in the complex topography with the vegetation area. Based on the numerical results, the physical properties of the wave attenuation are examined under various wave, geometric and vegetation conditions. Through the comparisons of these results, the effects of the vegetation properties, wave properties and model parameters such ac the momentum exchange coefficient have been clarified.
Average Bi-directional flow tube was suggested to measure single and two phase flow rate. Its working principle is similar with Pilot tube, however, it makes it possible to eliminate the cooling system which is normally needed to prevent from flashing in the pressure impulse line of Pilot tube when it is used in the depressurization condition. The suggested instrumentation was tested in the air-water vertical test section which has 80mm inner diameter and 10m length. The flow tube was installed at 120 of L/D from inlet of test section. From the test, single air and water flow rate was measured successfully. For the emasurement of two phase flow rate, Chexal drift-flux correlation was used. In the test a new correlation of momentum exchange factor was suggested. The test result shows that the suggested instrumentation using the measured void fraction and Chexal drift-flux correlation can predict the mass flow rates within $10\%$ error of measured data.

Impact damper is a passive damping system that controls undesirable vibration with mass block impacting with stops fixed to the excited structure, introducing momentum exchange and energy dissipation. However, harmful momentum exchange may occur in the random excitation increasing structural response. Based on the mechanism of impact damping system, a semi-active impact damper (SAID) with controllable impact timing as well as a semi-active control strategy is proposed to enhance the seismic performance of engineering structures in this paper. Comparative experimental studies were conducted to investigate the damping performances of the passive impact damper and SAID. The extreme working conditions for SAID were also discussed and approaches to enhance the damping effect under high-intensity excitations were proposed. A numerical simulation model of SAID attached to a frame structure was established to further explore the damping mechanism. The experimental and numerical results show that the SAID has better control effect than the traditional passive impact damper and can effectively broaden the damping frequency band. The parametric studies illustrate the mass ratio and impact damping ratio of SAID can significantly influence the vibration control effect by affecting the impact force.

A numerical investigation has been carried out for the flow characteristics after exchange of some filters from the original layer to the new low pressure loss layer with equal filtering efficiency. The solution domain includes upper plenum, filter layer, clean space, access panels, and lower plenum. The concept of the distributed pressure resistance was applied to describe the momentum loss in filter layer and access panels. The evolution of the flow field is simulated using the low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. over bar turbulent model and SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method. As a result, after the exchange of filter layer the power requirement can be reduced by 8-9 percent. The results also demonstrate that the perpendicularity of the flow near access panels may become worse at new filter layer than origianl filter layer. But the situation can be recovered by adjusting the jopening ratio of access panels.

Liquid phase mixing of impinging injector is a resultant byproduct from the momentum exchange between a pair of impinging jets and penetration of opponent jet. Principal aim of the present study is revealing the liquid phase mixing mechanism of split triplet impinging injection sprays, and thus extending our understanding on this particular injection element. Overall mixing extent is estimated from patternation tests by the use of purified tap water and kerosene to simulate the real propellant components, respectively, and with the liquid jet momentum ratio, a controlling mixing parameter, in the range of 0.5 to 6.0. Emphasis is placed on the effect of liquid sheet superposition and disintegration, and the results with detailed spray visualization revealed the fact that superposed liquid sheet disintegration is the main pathway of liquid phase mixing of split triplet impinging injector to yield enhanced mixing qualities.
