  • Numerical methods are developed to obtain the buckling loads and to analyze the postbuckling behavior of the tapered steel piles. The nondimensional differential equations governing the elastica of the buckled piles are derived by the third order theory and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method is used to solve the differential equations, and the bisection method is used to obtain the buckling loads and the reaction moments of the clamped ends. Both the linear and stepped taper of the steel piles are considered as the variable crosssection in the differential equations. As the numerical results, the equilibrium paths, the buckling loads vs. section ratio curves and the typical elastica and the bending moment diagrams of the buckled piles are presented in figures. Experimental studies that complement the theoretical results are presented. It is expected that the numerical methods developed in this study for calculating the buckling loads and analyzing the postbuckling behavior of the steel piles are used in the structural and foundation engineering.

  • In this paper, the lateral-torsional buckling of axially-transversally functionally graded tapered beam is investigated. The structure cross-section is assumed to be symmetric I-section, and it is continuously laterally supported by torsional springs through the length. In addition, the height of cross-section varies linearly throughout the length of structure. The proposed formulation is obtained for the case that the elastic and shear modulus change as a power function along the beam length and section height. This structure carries two concentrated moments at the ends. In this study, the lateral displacement and twisting angle relation of the beam are defined by sinusoidal series. After establishing the eigenvalue equation of unknown constants, the beam critical bending moment is found. To validate the accuracy and correctness of results, several numerical examples are solved.

  • This paper presents the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) of beams or girders with continuous lateral support at top flange. Traditional moment gradient factors ($C_b$) given by AISC in LRFD Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and by AASHTO in LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were reviewed. Finite-element method buckling analyses of doubly symmetric I-shaped beams with continuous top bracing were conducted to develop new moment gradient factors. A uniformly distributed load was applied at midheight and either or both end moments were applied at the ends of beams. The proposed solutions are simple and accurate for use by engineers to determine the LTB resistance of beams.

  • Stepped I-beams having increased moment of inertia at one end(singly stepped beam) or both ends(doubly stepped beams) can often be seen in construction of bridges due to material economy and easy fabrication of the section. This paper presents the results of the parametric study of lateral torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams with constant depth subjected to equal and opposite end moments applied at the end of the beam. Design recommendations were made based on the finite element results of the models having different combinations of monosymmetric ratio, stepped length ratio, flange thickness ratio and flange width ratio,. The proposed approximation is acceptable based on the parameters given having mostly conservative results. The proposed equation can be further used to extend the study to different loading conditions.

  • In tied-arch bridges, the way the arch and the deck are connected may become crucial. The deck is usually suspended from hangers made out of steel pinned cables capable of resisting axial forces only. However, a proper structural response may be ensured by fixing and stiffening the hangers in order to resist, additionally, shear forces and bending moments. Thus, this paper studies the effect of different pinned and stiffened hanger arrangements on the structural behavior of the tied-arch bridges, with the intention of providing designers with useful tools at the early steps of design. Longitudinally and transversally stiffened hangers (and the effect of hinges at the hangers and their locations) are studied separately because the in-plane and the out-of-plane behavior of the bridge are uncoupled due to its symmetry. As a major conclusion, regarding the in-plane behavior, hangers composed of cables (either with vertical, $Nielsen-L\ddot{o}hse$ or network arrangements) are recommended due to its low cost and ease of erection. Alternatively, longitudinally stiffened hangers, fixed at both ends, can be used. Regarding the out-of-plane behavior, and in addition to three-dimensional arrangements of cables, of limited effectiveness, transversally stiffened hangers fixed at both ends are the most efficient arrangement. A configuration almost as efficient and, additionally, cheaper and easier to build can be achieved by locating a hinge at the end corresponding to the most flexible structural element (normally the arch). Its efficiency is further improved if the cross-section tapers from the fixed end to the pinned end.

  • Synchronous multi-pressure measurements were carried out with relatively long time duration for a double-layer reticulated shell roof model in the atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel. Since the long roof is open at two ends for the storage of coal piles, three different testing cases were considered as the empty roof without coal piles (Case A), half coal piles inside (Case B) and full coal piles inside (Case C). Based on the wind tunnel test results, non-Gaussian time-dependent statistics of net wind pressure on the shell roof were quantified in terms of skewness and kurtosis. It was found that the direct statistical estimation of high-order moments and peak factors is quite sensitive to the duration of wind pressure time-history data. The maximum value of COVs (Coefficients of variations) of high-order moments is up to 1.05 for several measured pressure processes. The Mixture distribution models are proposed for better modeling the distribution of a parent pressure process. With the aid of mixture parent distribution models, the existing translated-peak-process (TPP) method has been revised and improved in the estimation of non-Gaussian peak factors. Finally, non-Gaussian peak factors of wind pressure, particularly for those observed hardening pressure process, were calculated by employing various state-of-the-art methods and compared to the direct statistical analysis of the measured long-duration wind pressure data. The estimated non-Gaussian peak factors for a hardening pressure process at the leading edge of the roof were varying from 3.6229, 3.3693 to 3.3416 corresponding to three different cases of A, B and C.

  • Studies on the second-order analysis of reinforced concrete columns have been chiefly dealt with symmetric section under uniaxial loading. In practical situations, however, columns are subjected to biaxial loadings. Therefore, for more accurate prediction of the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading, the interaction between bending moments of major and minor axes should be considered. Recently Kim & Lee proposed a numerical method of predicting the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading. In this paper, to investigate the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading and verify the validity of proposed method, a series of test were carried out for sixteen tied reinforced columns with 100${\times}$100mm square and 200${\times}$100mm rectangular sections under various loading conditions. The length of columns was 1,300mm and the concrete strength was 28MPa. The boundary conditions at the both ends were hinged and end eccentricities were equal(400mm). Proposed numerical analyses applied to the test piece were performed to predict behavior of concrete columns with square and rectangular sections under various loading conditions. Test results were also compared with those using the moment magnifier method in ACI code. The test results showed that the moment magnifier method is conservative.

  • The dynamic and structural responses of a 1000-m long circular submerged floating tunnel (SFT) with both ends fixed under survival irregular-wave excitations are investigated. The floater-mooring nonlinear and elastic coupled dynamics are modeled by a time-domain numerical simulation program, OrcaFlex. Two configurations of mooring lines i.e., vertical mooring (VM) and inclined mooring (IM), and four different buoyancy-weight ratios (BWRs) are selected to compare their global performances. The result of modal analysis is included to investigate the role of the respective natural frequencies and elastic modes. The effects of various submergence depths are also checked. The envelopes of the maximum/minimum horizontal and vertical responses, accelerations, mooring tensions, and shear forces/bending moments of the entire SFT along the longitudinal direction are obtained. In addition, at the mid-section, the time series and the corresponding spectra of those parameters are also presented and analyzed. The pros and cons of the two mooring shapes and high or low BWR values are systematically analyzed and discussed. It is demonstrated that the time-domain numerical simulation of the real system including nonlinear hydro-elastic dynamics coupled with nonlinear mooring dynamics is a good method to determine various design parameters.

  • The literature regarding the free vibration analysis of Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko beams on elastic soil is plenty, but the free vibration analysis of Reddy-Bickford beams on elastic soil with/without axial force effect using the Differential Transform Method (DTM) has not been investigated by any of the studies in open literature so far. In this study, the free vibration analysis of axially loaded Reddy-Bickford beam on elastic soil is carried out by using DTM. The model has six degrees of freedom at the two ends, one transverse displacement and two rotations, and the end forces are a shear force and two end moments in this study. The governing differential equations of motion of the rectangular beam in free vibration are derived using Hamilton's principle and considering rotatory inertia. Parameters for the relative stiffness, stiffness ratio and nondimensionalized multiplication factor for the axial compressive force are incorporated into the equations of motion in order to investigate their effects on the natural frequencies. At first, the terms are found directly from the analytical solutions of the differential equations that describe the deformations of the cross-section according to the high-order theory. After the analytical solution, an efficient and easy mathematical technique called DTM is used to solve the governing differential equations of the motion. The calculated natural frequencies of one end fixed and the other end simply supported Reddy-Bickford beam on elastic soil using DTM are tabulated in several tables and figures and are compared with the results of the analytical solution where a very good agreement is observed and the mode shapes are presented in graphs.
