This research aimed to experimentally and theoretically investigate the moment strength of deck plates. A moment experiment was carried out using a full-scale 14 specimen. To prevent local buckling, the point load was applied at 1/4 points. After the experiment, theoretical analysis was conducted and the differences between various codes were identified. The experimental results were compared with AISI (the American Iron and Steel Institute), EC (Euro Code) 3, and KS (Korea Standard) codes. Analysis results are summarized as follows: (1) the failure mode was influenced by local buckling at the midpoint of the beam and/or at the intermediate loading point: (2) if yielding first occurred at the tension side, the moment strength would increase as the plastic reservation of the tension zone acted: (3) the experimental results were closest to the EC3 codes in which the partial plastic reservation was considered; (4) statistical evaluation based on the EC3 Annex Z showed that the partial resistance safety coefficient calculated applying to the EC3 formula, $^{\circ}{_M}$, was placed within 1.1 which was the target value of EC3 code; and (5) the analytical power of AISI and KS codeswere expected to improve into the level of EC3 codes if the concept of plastic reservation of the tension side would be introduced to them.

This paper explains the basic theory and a new development of for the residual strength prediction program of the asymmetrically damaged ships, being capable of searching moment-curvature relations considering neutral axis mobility. It is noted that moment plane and neutral axis plane should be separately defined for asymmetric sections. The validity of the new program is verified by comparing moment-curvature curves of 1/3 scaled frigate model where the results from new algorithm well coincide with experimental and nonlinear FEA results for intact condition and with nonlinear FEA results for damaged condition. Applicability of new algorithm is also verified by applying VLCC model to the newly developed program. It is proved that reduction of residual strengths is visually presented using the new algorithm when damage specifications of ABS, DNV and IMO are applied. It is concluded that the new algorithm shows very good performance to produce moment-curvature relations with neutral axis mobility on the asymmetrically damaged ships. It is expected that the new program based on the developed algorithm can largely reduce design period of FE modeling and increase user conveniences.

This study summarizes the results of a research project aimed at investigating the inelastic rotation capacity of beam-column connections of reinforced concrete moment frames. A total of 91 test specimens for beam-column joint connections were examined in detail, and 28 specimens were classified as special moment frame connections based on the design and detailing requirements in the ACI 318-02 Provisions. Then the acceptance criteria, originally defined for steel moment frame connections in the AISC-02 Seismic Provisions, were used to evaluate the joint connections of concrete moment frames. Twenty-seven out of 28 test specimens that satisfy the design requirements for special moment frame structures provide sufficient strength and are ductile up to a plastic rotation of 0.03 rad. without any major degradation in strength. Joint shear stress, column-to-beam flexural strength ratio, and transverse reinforcement ratio in a joint all play a key role in good performance of the connections.
Modular steel buildings consist of prefabricated room-sized structural units that are manufactured offsite and installed onsite. The inter-module connections must fulfill the assembly construction requirements and soundly transfer the external loads. This work proposes an innovative assembled connection suitable for modular buildings with concrete-filled steel tube columns. The connection uses pretensioned strands and plugin bars to vertically connect the adjacent modular columns. The moment-transferring performance of this inter-module connection was studied through monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The results showed that because of the assembly construction, the connected sections were separated under lateral bending, and the prestressed inter-module connection performed as a weak semirigid connection. The moment strength at the early loading stage originated primarily from the contact bonding mechanism with the infilled concrete, and the postyield strength depended mainly on the tensioned strands. The connection displayed a self-centering-like behavior that the induced deformation was reversed during unloading. The energy dissipation originated primarily from frictional slipping of the plugin bars and steel strands. The moment transferring ability was closely related to the section dimension and the arrangements of the plugin bars and steel strands. A simplified strength calculation and evaluation method was also proposed, and the effectiveness was validated with the test data.

In this study a seismic retrofit scheme for the reinforced concrete moment framed structures was investigated using steel bracing and moment frames. The analysis model structure is a 3-story 3-bay moment frame structure designed only for gravity load. The stress/strain concentration in brace-RC frame connection was investigated using finite element analysis. To prevent premature joint failure, steel moment frames were placed inside of middle bay of the RC frame. Two types of braces, steel braces and buckling restrained braces(BRBs), were used for retrofit, and the ductility and the strength of the structure before and after the retrofit were compared using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. According to the analysis results, the strength and ductility of the structure retrofitted by the moment frames and braces increased significantly. The added steel frame did not contribute significantly to the increase of lateral strength mainly because the size is relatively small.
The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the ductility and strength factors that are key components of the response modification factor for special steel moment-resistant frames. The ductility factors for special steel moment-resistant frames were calculated by multiplying the ductility factor for SDOF systems and the MDOF modification factors. Ductility factors were computed for elastic and perfectly plastic SDOF systems undergoing different levels of inelastic deformation and periods when subjected to a large number of recorded earthquake ground motions. Based on the results of the regression analysis, simplified expressions were proposed to compute the ductility factors. Based on previous studies, the MDOF modification factors were also proposed to account for the MDOF systems. Strength factors for special steel moment resisting frames were estimated from the results of the nonlinear static analysis. A total of 36 sample steel frames were designed to investigate the ductility and strength factors considering design parameters such as number of stories (4, 8, and 16 stories), seismic zone factors (Z = 0.075, 0.2, and 0.4), framing system (Perimeter Frames, PF and Distributed Frames, DF), and failure mechanism (Strong-Column Weak Beam, SCWB, and Weak-Column Strong-Beam, WCSB). The effects of these design parameters on the ductility and strength factors for special steel moment-resisting frames were investigated.

For continuous I-girder bridges, a large negative bending moment is generated near pier region so that plastic hinge is first formed at this point. Then, the bending moment is redistributed when the I-girder has enough flexural ductility (or rotational capacity). However, for I-girder with high strength steel, it is known that the flexural ductility is considerably decreased by increasing the yield strength of material. Thus, it is necessary to conduct a study for guaranteeing proper flexural ductility of I-girder with high-strength steel. In this study, the evaluation of flexural ductility of negative moment region of I-girder with high strength steel where yield stress of steel is 680 MPa is presented based on the results of finite element analysis and experiment. From the results, it is found that the flexural ductility of the I-girder is significantly reduced due to the increase of elastic deformation and the decrease of plastic deformation ability of the material when the yield strength increases. In this study, the method to improve the flexural ductility of I-girder with high strength steel is proposed by an unequal installation of cross beam and an optimal position of cross beam is also suggested. Finally, the effects of the unequal installation of cross beam on the flexural ductility are discussed based on the experimental results.

In structural analysis of prestressed concrete continuous flexural mambers, secondary effects produced by tendon forces should be reasonably estimated. The secondary moment at service load stags is normally used for ultimate required moment caculation in strength design. This concept has to be reviewed when precise analysis is performed considering construction step, time dependent properties of concrete and tendon. An ultimate moment computation proposed, concept and structural behavior. The previously proposed procedure by other researcher and the proposed procedure are compared and reviewed for the currently constructed precast prestressed concrete bridge.

This paper presents the cyclic seismic performance of slip-critically designed, high-strength bolted-beam splice in steel moment frames. Before the moment connection reaching its ultimate plastic strength, unexpected premature slippage occurred at the slip-critically designed beam splice during the test. The experimentally observed frictional coefficients were as low as about 50% to 60% of nominal(code) value. Nevertheless, the bearing type behavior mobilized after the slippage transferred the increasing cyclic loads successfully, i.e., the consequence of slippage into bearing was not catastrophic to the connection behavior. The test result seems to indicate that the traditional beam splice design basing upon(bolt-hole deducted) effective flange area criterion may not be sufficient in developing the plastic strength of moment connections under severe earthquake loading. New procedure for achieving slip-critical beam splice design is proposed based on capacity design concept.
The double split Tee connection, a type of full strength-partially restrained connection, has adequate flexural strength according to the changes in the thickness of the T-stub flange and the gauge distance of the high-strength bolts. Moreover, the double split Tee connection is designed and constructed with seismic connections that have enough ductility capacity applicable to ordinary moment frame and special moment frame by grade of steel, size of beam and column and geometric connection shape. However, such a domestic research and a proposal of a suitable design formula about the double split Tee connection are insufficient. Thus, many experimental and analytical studies are in need for the domestic application of the double split Tee connection. Therefore, this study aimed to examine and suggest feasibility of a design formula of the double split Tee connection of FEMA.
