Solidification of aluminum alloys under moderate pressures has been investigated. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient at the casting/mold interface varies with time after pouring the molten metal into the die cavity, and therefore plays an important role in determining solidification sequence. The heat transfer coefficients were evaluated by using an inverse problem method, based on the measured temperature distribution. The calculated heat transfer coefficients were used for solidification simulation in the squeeze casting process. The effects of applied pressure and positions of insulation in the mold have also been investigated on solidification microstructures and on the formation of macrosegregation of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloys.
Shell sand is widely used to make a complex shape castings due to its good collapsibility. When molten metal is poured into the mold, various gases are generated by the thermal decomposition of binder in the shell core. Casting defects such as blow hole and blister come from these gases. If it is possible to predict the evolution of gas quantitatively, it may provide effective solutions for minimizing the casting defects. To examine the gas evolution by shell core quantitatively, casting experiment and calculation were carried out. Gas pressure and gas volume evolved by shell core were measured in the experiment, and temperature distribution in the shell core was obtained by heat transfer analysis. From the result above, prediction on the gas volume evolved during pouring was tried. As forming pressure of the shell core increased and forming temperature decreased, the gas evolution increased. There was a close relationship between the calculated gas volume evolved and the measured one.
Laser cladding technology was studied as a method for upgrading the present repair procedures of damaged tubes in a nuclear steam generator and Doosan subsequently developed and designed a new Laser Cladding Repair System. One of the important features of this newly developed Laser Cladding Repair System is that molten metal can be deposited on damaged tube surfaces using a laser beam and filler wire without the need to install sleeves inside the tube. Laser cladding qualification tests on the steam generator tube material, Alloy 600, were performed according to ASME Section IX. Residual stress analyses were performed for weld metal and heat affected zone of as-welded and PWHT with SYSWELD software.
The spiral fluidity of graphite-dispersed Al-Si alloys has been investigated as a function of contents of Si and graphite, and of particle size of graphite. The dispersion of uncoated graphite is carred out by the vortex process of preheat-treated graphite into molten metal. The fluidity of hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloys is observed to the better than that of hypo-eutectic ones. In the case of graphite-dispersed Al-Si alloys they fluidity increases in hypo-eutectic alloys and decreases in hyper-eutectic ones in comparison with that of the corresponding undispersed alloys. Fluidity decreases with an increase of amount of dispersed graphite particles and inversely proportional to the total surface area of graphite particles.

Application of aluminum alloy has been increasing for most of industry area because aluminum has a good mechanical properties and castability, especially automotive field for weight reduction. But, Furnace industry is sluggish. The purpose of this study is numerical analysis of aluminum holding furnace for reasonableness estimation when we design for new model of furnace. The numerical simulation involving fluid flow of inside air and heat transfer to fireproof material is presented in order to improve the understanding of aluminum furnace. First of all, we are carried out numerically for the two dimensional inside convection and surface radiation heat transfer in a square enclosure. Subsequently, we are established the analysis method of aluminum furnace considering natural convective heat transfer

The typical MCFC (molten carbonate fuel cell) anode is made of Ni-10%Cr alloy. The work of this paper is focused concerning long life of anode because Ni-10% Cr anode is suffering from sintering and creep behavior during cell operation. Therefore, Ni-coated Alumina powder($20{\mu}m$) was developed by electroless nickel plating. Optimum condition of electroless nickel coation on $20{\mu}m$ alumina is as follows: pH 11.7, temperature $65{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, powder amount $100cm^2/l$. The deposition rate for Ni-electroless plating was as a function of temperature and activation energy was evaluated by Arrhenius Equation thereby activation energy calculated slope of experimental data as 117.6 kJ/mol, frequency factor(A) was $6.28{\times}10^{18}hr^{-1}$, respectively.

A revolutionary "Active Braze Coated Diamond" (ABCD) has been developed for bonding diamond grits firmly in the metal matrix. The molten braze is wetted and reacted with diamond to form strong chemical bond at the interface so that the diamond does not become knocked out of tools. The ABC is a nickel alloy that can form metallurgical diffusion bondswith the metal matrix. In essence, ABCD turns diamond into a metal grain so that the diamond tools can be made by conventional powder metallurgical process without being concerned about the poor bonding between matrix metal powder and the diamond as before.
A fully coupled fluid flow, heat, and solute transport model was developed to investigate turbulent flow, solidification, and macrosegregation in a continuous casting process of steel slab with EMBR. Transport equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species for a binary iron-carbon alloy system were solved using a continuum model. The electromagnetic field was described by the Maxwell equations. A finite-volume method was employed to solve the conservation equations associated with appropriate boundary conditions. The effects of intensity of magnetic field and carbon segregation were investigated. The electromagnetic field reduces the velocity of molten flow in the mold and an increase in the percentage of C in steel results in a decrease of carbon segregation ratio.

A study has been made of the interaction parameters of Zn other elements in dilute solutesd solution of molten cadmium alloys over the temperature range of 450 to 570$^{\circ}C$. The experi-mental measurementss were made in a touch instant cell using a fusedd Licl-KCl electrolyte. The activity of zinc in binary and ternary solutions sexhibiteds a strong positive deviation from Raoult's law. The addition of silver, indium or lead increased the activity of zinc whereas addition of copper, bismuth or tin decreased the zinc activity slightly. The results for all the metallic solutions showed a linear dependence of reciprocal of ab-solute temperature over the experimental range. The interaction parameters obtained are as follows.
Arc ion plating (AIP), laser cladding, and nitriding are methods that can prevent mold damage or repair and create cracks and breakages on the die surface. The dissolution and soldering behavior of coated SKD61 by using arc ion plating, laser cladding, and nitriding was investigated. The structure of the coating was investigated as a function of deposition conditions by X-ray diffraction and the crystallographic orientation was determined using the texture factor. The TiAlN film deposited with AIP showed excellent corrosion resistance in the molten aluminum alloy at 680℃. In this paper, we have detailed the corrosion and mass loss phenomena associated with these steel-cast metal interactions.
