It is very important to assess accurately the terms which are included in the heat budget equation of soil surface because they are used in the UM and miso-scale circulation modeling as well as in the micrometeorological studies. Each terms in the heat budget equation change according to the soil moisture content. So, it is necessary to specify clearly the relations between soil moisture content and these terms. Special experiment with micrometeorological measurements was executed to study these relations at Environmental Research Center of Tsukuba University, Japan. The results are as follow: 1. The soil moisture contents of 1 cm and 4 cm depth are oscillated with one day Period in drying process and the amplitude of variation of 1 cm depth is greater than that of 4 cm. 2. Increase in soil moisture contents due to precipitation result in decrease of albedo with step function. 3. Sensible heat is in reverse proportion to the soil moisture content and latent heat is in direct proportion to it. Latent heat is more sensitive than sensible heat according to the soil moisture variation. Net long wave radiation have high correlation with soil moisture. 4. Comparing with the radiative term with the flux term in wetting process due to precipitation, the energy transfer of the aero and thermodynamic flux is greater than that of the radiative heat flux.

The soil NO flux measurements in Korea were made from 17 May 1997 to 16 June 1997 on grass land at Kunsan National University in southwestern Korea by using flow-through chamber technique. The experiment was conducted in an effort to determine the role of natural emissions of NO on rural atmospheric photochemistry, and to understand the soil NO emission mechanism with respect to soil parameters. Soil NO fluxes were measured every minutes and averaged in every 15 minutes as well as soil temperature. Soil samples were analyzed for $NO_3^-, NH_4^+$, and moisture in soil. Soil nitrate was not detected in most times, and total N-containing was limited in site soils. There was a optimum range of soil moisture and temperature for soil NO flux. The overall average of soil NO emission rates were found to be 1.30 $\pm 0.92 ngNm^{-2}s^{-1}$ (n=1219), and ranged from 0.01 ngNm^{-2}s^{-1}$ to 5.62 ngNm^{-2}s^{-1}$. Diurnal variation of soil NO emission was typical, which was in higher level during daytime, and was in lower level over the night. NO flux showed a strong soil temperature dependence $(r^2=0.78)$, but not with soil moisture and soil N-containing during this experimental period; NO fluxes increased exponentially as soil temperature increased. In order to assure the relevant relationship between soil NO flux and the soil parameters, long-term soil flux measurement on different types of land use should be planned and conducted continuously.

While the number of rainy days is decreasing, the mean annual precipitation is increasing due to abnormal climate changes caused by the global warming in Korea. Owing to the biased-concentration of rainfall during specific short terms, not only flood but also drought becomes more and more serious. From the literature, it is easily found that previous studies about flood have been intensively conducted. However, previous studies about drought have been performed rarely. This study conducted the comparison between two representative drought indexes calculated from soil moisture and precipitation. Study area was Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do in Korea. Soil Moisture Index(SMI) was calculated from soil moisture data while the Standardized Precipitation Index(SPI) and the Palmer Drought Severity Index(PDSI) were calculated from meteorological data. All monthly data utilized in this study were observed at the KoFlux Tower. After the comparative analysis, three indexes showed similar tendency. Therefore, it is thought that the drought index using soil moisture measured at the KoFlux Tower is reasonable, which is because the soil moisture is immediately affected by all the meteorological factors.
This study was conducted to investigate the influences of sapflow flux on soil water tensions and soil moisture content at the Abies holophylla plots in Gwangneung, Gyeonggido, from September to October 2004. The Abies holophylla had been planted in 1976 and thinning and pruning were carried out in 1996 and 2004. Sapflow flux was measured by the heat pulse method, and soil water tension was measured by tensiometer at hillslope and streamside. Time domain reflectometry probes (TDR) were positioned horizontally at the depth of 10, 30 and 50 cm to measure soil moisture content. All of data were recorded every 30 minutes with the dataloggers. The sapflow flux responded sensitively to rainfall, so little sapflow was detected in rainy days. The average daily sapflow flux of sample trees was 10.16l, a maximum was 15.09l, and a minimum was 0.0l. The sapflow flux's diurnal changes showed that sapflow flux increased from 9 am and up to 0.74 l/30 min. The highest sapflow flux maintained by 3 pm and decreased almost 0.0 l/30 mm after 7 pm. The average soil water tensions were low ($-141.3cmH_2O$, $-52.9cmH_2O$ and $-134.2cmH_2O$) at hillslope and high ($-6.1cmH_2O$, $-18.0cmH_2O$ and $-3.7cmH_2O$) at streamside. When the soil moisture content decreased after rainfall, the soil water tension at hillslope responded sensitively to the sapflow flux. The soil water tension decreased as the sapflow flux increased during the day time, whereas increased during the night time when the sapflow flux was not detected. On the other hand, there was no significant relationship between soil water tension and sapflow flux at streamside. Soil moisture content at hillslope decreased continuously after rain, and showed a negative correlation to sapflow flux like a soil water tension at hillslope. As considered results above, it was confirmed that the response of soil moisture tension to sapflow flux at hillslope and streamside were different.
Background: Large-scale land-use change is being caused by various socioeconomic problems. Land-use change is necessarily accompanied by changes in the regional carbon balance in terrestrial ecosystems and affects climate change. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the correlation between environmental factors altered by land-use change and the carbon balance. To address this issue, we studied the characteristics of soil carbon flux and soil moisture content related to rainfall events in mountain pastures converted from deciduous forest in Korea. Results: The average soil moisture contents (SMC) during the study period were 23.1% in the soil respiration (SR) plot and 25.2% in the heterotrophic respiration (HR) plot. The average SMC was increased to 2.1 and 1.1% in the SR and HR plots after rainfall events, respectively. In addition, saturated water content was 29.36% in this grassland. The soil water content was saturated under the consistent rainfall of more than $5mm\;h^{-1}$ rather than short-term heavy rainfall event. The average SR was increased to 28.4% after a rainfall event, but the average HR was decreased to 70. 1%. The correlation between soil carbon flux rates and rainfall was lower than other environmental factors. The correlation between SMC and soil carbon flux rates was low. However, HR exhibited a tendency to be decreased when SMC was 24.5%. In addition, the correlation between soil temperature and respiration rate was significant. Conclusions: In a mountain pasture ecosystem, rainfall induced the important change of soil moisture content related to respiration in soil. SR and HR were very sensitive to change of SMC in soil surface layer about 0-10-cm depth. SR was increased by elevation of SMC due to a rainfall event, and the result was assumed from maintaining moderate soil moisture content for respiration in microorganism and plant root. However, HR was decreased in long-time saturated condition of soil moisture content. Root has obviously contributed to high respiration in heavy rainfall, but it was affected to quick depression in respiration under low rainfall. The difference of SMC due to rainfall event was causative of a highly fluctuated soil respiration rate in the same soil temperature condition. Therefore, rainfall factor or SMC are to be considered in predicting the soil carbon flux of grassland ecosystems for future climate change.

A closed chamber system was used for measuring $N_2$0 fluxes from an agriculturally managed upland soil in Kunsan during the growing season from May to July 2002. It is known that soil is one dominant source of atmospheric $N_2$O, contributing to about 57% (9 Tg y $^{-1}$ ) of the total annual global emission. Hence, its increasing emissions and concentrations are largely associated with agricultural activities. In order to elucidate characteristics of soil nitrogen emissions from intensively managed agricultural soils and to understand the roles of soil parameters (soil moisture, soil pH, soil temperature, and soil nitrogen) in the gas emission, $N_2$O soil emissions were measured at every hour during the experimental period (21 days). Soil $N_2$O fluxes were calculated based on changes of $N_2$O concentrations measured inside a closed chamber at every hour. The analysis of $N_2$O was made by using a Gas Chromatography (equipped with Electron Capture Detector). Soil parameters at sampling plots were also analyzed. Monthly averaged $N_2$O fluxes during May, June, and July were 0.14, 0.05, and 0.13 mg-$N_2$O m$^{-2}$ h$^{-1}$ , respectively. Soil temperature and soil pH did not significantly vary over the experimental period; soil temperatures ranged from 12∼$25^{\circ}C$, and soil pH ranged 4.56∼4.75. However, soil moisture varied significantly from 32% to 56% in WFPS. Relationships between soil parameters and $N_2$O fluxes exhibited positive linear relationships. Strong positive correlation ($R^2$ = 0.57, P< 0.0001) was found between $N_2$O flux and sil moisture. It suggests that soil moisture has affected strongly soil $N_2$O emissions during the experimental periods, while other parameters have remained relatively at constant levels. $N_2$O flux from agricultural soils was significant and should be taken account for the national emission inventory.
In this paper, lysimeter was installed to analyze the moisture fluctuations on the surface of a forest. The weight of the soil was measured, and the moisture fluctuations were calculated through the difference in weight over time. The amount of dew condensation on the surface of the ground was about 2-7 mm. January experienced the most dew condensation (7.2 mm). It was found that about 43 mm of dew condensation was generated over one year. To analyze the characteristics of evapotranspiration in the forest, the evapotranspiration on the surface was measured by the lysimeter method and the evapotranspiration on the upper part of the canopy was measured by the eddy covariance method. These results were compared and analyzed. Until mid-October, the evapotranspiration of the forest was active, and the amount of evapotranspiration on the top of the canopy was higher than the amount on the surface. Thereafter, the amount of evapotranspiration on the top of the canopy decreased due to the lowering of temperature and net-radiation. The amount of evapotranspiration on the surface and above the canopy showed the same tendency.
Agricultural drought is triggered by a depletion of moisture content in the soil, which hinders photosynthesis and thus increases carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the atmosphere. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between soil moisture (SM) and vegetation activity toward quantifying CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. To this end, the MODerate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), an optical multispectral sensor, was used to evaluate two regions in South Korea for validation. Vegetation activity was analyzed through MOD13A1 vegetation indices products, and MODIS gross primary productivity (GPP) product was used to calculate the CO2 flux based on its relationship with respiration. In the case of SM, it was calculated through the method of applying apparent thermal inertia (ATI) in combination with land surface temperature and albedo. To validate the SM and CO2 flux, flux tower data was used which are the observed measurement values for the extreme drought period of 2014 and 2015 in South Korea. These two variables were analyzed for temporal variation on flux tower data as daily time scale, and the relationship with vegetation index (VI) was synthesized and analyzed on a monthly scale. The highest correlation between SM and VI (correlation coefficient (r) = 0.82) was observed at a time lag of one month, and that between VI and CO2 (r = 0.81) at half month. This regional study suggests a potential capability of MODIS-based SM, VI, and CO2 flux, which can be applied to an assessment of the global view of the agricultural drought by using available satellite remote sensing products.

Oxides of nitrogen play important roles in atmospheric chemistry. Soil has been recognized as a major natural source of NO, and its emission depends on soil parameters such as soil nitrogen availability, soil moisture and temperature. It is necessary to understand effects of these controlling parameters on soil NO emission. In order to understand soil moisture effects on NO emission, variations of NO concentration and existence of its equilibrium concentration were observed from ammonium fertilized Japanese upland soil prepared for different soil moisture conditions. The closed chamber technique was employed for this study. The significant increases in NO with soil moisture were found. Maximum was occurred at sample ID4 (55% of water-filled pore space (WFPS)), but it decreased as soil moisture increased. No significant NO concentration was emitted from soil sample without fertilizer, but there was significant NO in fertilized soil samples. The magnitudes of NO from soil increased with time and reached at steady state within ten minutes approximately. These results suggest that nitrogen input from fertilizer takes charge in the first step of sharp increase in NO emission, and then soil moisture becomes important factor to control NO emission from the soils. NO concentrations from soil were compared to those one-day after the experiment. Results from the comparison analysis suggest that the soil NO flux might have been stimulated by soil disturbances like mixing, and this is much more effective in dry soils rather than in wet soils. It was found that much less NO came out from soils after a day; suggesting that most of NO was released from the soils within a day after fertilizer application during our experiment. The length of NO releasing time span may depend on the amounts of fertilizer applied, soil moisture condition, and other soil physical parameters.

Infrared heating has been traditionally used in industrial applications for processes such as dehydration of food industrial. This heating method involves the application of radiation in the wavelength range of 5~50 micrometers. In this work, simultaneous heat balance equations were developed to simulate the infrared radiation heating of red peppers. The equations assume that moisture diffuses to the outer boundaries of the material in liquid form and evaporation occurs at the surface of the red peppers. Energy for moisture evaporation is supplied by the infrared radiant energy. The equations were validated with experimental data on surface temperature and average moisture content of red peppers. Average deviations of predicted surface red peppers temperature and average red peppers moisture from experimental data were 323~353K and 50~80%, respectively. The spectral extinction coefficients in the wavelength range $1.5<{\lambda}<27$ micrometer at 293K for Red Peppers were determined from results of reflection measurements and the four flux radiative heat transfer calculation. The radiation extinction coefficients were obtained from effective drying factor the temperature 373K.
