  • Recently, there have been attempts to claim the hair moisturizing effect for a hair care product, however there has not yet been an official evaluation method because heating temperature for hair has not been established. This study was conducted to establish a quantitative evaluation for hair water content. In order to observe the behavior of water inside hair, heat was applied to hair with various temperatures using thermogravimetric dry residue. As the heating temperature increased, the amount of moisture released from the hair increased. As a result of evaluating hair using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), a unique phenomenon in which a rapid endothermic reaction occurs around 75 ℃ was observed. This phenomenon was also observed in different ethnic hair. In hair that damaged the hair cuticle barrier with oxidation and heat, this rapidly rising endothermic reaction temperature occurred at 77 ℃, which was slightly higher, and 73 ℃ was observed when this hair was applied with polar oil, conditioning polymer, or keratin protein. To determine how this reaction affects the hair surface, friction test was performed using an atomic force microscope. When heated above 75 ℃, cuticle friction increased, however when heated above 90 ℃, there was no change in hair cuticle friction. Finally, it was confirmed that around 75 ℃ is the critical temperature at which desorption of water bound to the hair occurs. It is suggested that a heating temperature of 75 ℃ is the optimal temperature for detecting and quantifying the moisture content of hair, and that approximately 10% detected at 75 ℃ can be a standard value for hair moisture content.

  • Drying process in the cylindrical thin film layer of sludge with the thickness less than a few millimeters has been investigated. Thin film drying is specially designed and used to dry the viscous materials like sewage sludge. The thin film layer of sludge is dried on the metallic cylindrical surface through which thermal energy is supplied to the layer during drying. The wall temperature is assumed to be constant during drying in the present study for the simplification. In order to solve the equations, the mass transfer rate on the drying surface should be determined. The mass flux of evaporated water vapor on the surface is estimated with the formulation given in the literature. The effect of some physical parameters on drying has been examined to figure out the drying characteristics of the sludge layer.

  • The filter has long been used in purification processes for indoor air quality. To determine the deodorization effect of several filter materials in a full-scale air-handling system, the present study has been carried out using a wind tunnel equipped with a heat exchanger and various filter materials, such as commercial fabric, activated carbon(AC) and silver nano-particles attached to activated carbon(Ag-AC). The experiment was conducted using an odor substance with ammonia, acetaldehyde, acetic acid. The results obtained indicate that odor substance is substantially decreased on the moisture condensation on the surface of the heat exchanger. The fabric filter has no effect for removal of odor substances. The deodorization efficiency is found to be approximately 7% in the AC filter, while the deodorization efficiency is increased up to 10% using the Ag-AC filter.

  • Modern furniture is mostly made of panel products such as a glue-up panel, a particle board and a medium density fiberboard(MDF). Warping is a major defect of these panel products resulting in degrading final products. In this study the factors related to the warping of a glue-up panel and MDF were investigated by comparing the physical properties of warped specimens with those of the unwarped. The differences between the moisture contents measured on the both surfaces of specimens were found to mainly influence the warping of glue-up panel specimens whether conditioned or not. The average oven-dry density of warped glue-up panel specimens was definitely higher than that of the unwarped at l% significance level. For MDF the influencing factor on warping has not been revealed yet, however it was found that the conditioning reduced the number of warped specimens.

  • Drying process in the thin film layer of sludge with the thickness less than a few millimeters has been investigated using the simple one-dimensional model. Thin film drying is usually used to dry the viscous materials like sewage sludge. The thin film layer of sludge is dried on the metallic surface through which thermal energy is supplied to the layer during drying. In order to solve the equations, the mass transfer rate on the drying surface should be determined. The mass flux of evaporated water vapor on the surface is estimated with the formulation given in the literature. The effect of heating temperature, film thickness, and air velocity on drying has been examined to figure out the drying characteristics of the sludge layer.

  • Heat pump drying has a great potential for energy saving due to its high energy efficiency in comparison to conventional air drying. The heat pump dryer is usually operated at the temperature less than $50^{\circ}C$ and the drying temperature is limited to the operating temperature of the heat pump system. In order to increase the drying temperature, the special box-type heat pump dryer has been developed. The dryer uses the two-cycle heat pump system which has the two heat pump cycles for high and low temperature heating. The high temperature cycle uses the refrigerant 124 to get the temperature greater than $80^{\circ}C$ and the low temperature cycle uses the refrigerant 134a. The drying experiment has been carried out to figure out the performance of the dryer with the selected drying material.

  • This study examines a regeneration process using hot air heated by solar radiation to recover absorption potential by evaporating moisture in liquid desiccant. More specifically, this study is aimed at finding the optimum operating condition of the regenerator by utilizing a well-established statistical tool, so-called design of experiment, and optimization techniques. It is demonstrated that an optimization model to find the optimum operating condition can be obtained using the functional relationship between regeneration rate and affecting factors which is approximated on the basis experimental results.

  • The water fluidized bed heat exchanger was installed to recover heat from paper mill hood exhaust air containing lot of moisture and also fouling contaminants. The hood exhaust air flow rate was about $110,000m^3/hr$ at $70^{\circ}C$. The commercial scale field test apparatus has been operated for 3 months. As a result of operation, total heat recovered was 2,380,000 kcal/hr and proportion of the latent heat to total heat was 74%. The annual energy saving was estimated as 450 million won.

  • In this study, the insulation performance of thermal insulation materials such as glass wool, polyetylene and flexible lastomeric foam according to water vapor permeance was estimated by using experimental correlation equation. The results showed the conductivity increment of flexible lastomeric foam which has very low-permeability (${\le}0.15[ng/{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa]\;or\;{\mu}{\ge}1,000$) is about 50% lower than that of glass wool with the lapse of ten years. The conclusion is that moisture inevitably accumulated in permeable Insulations reduces insulation performance and also accelerates surface condensation in the case of cold water system.

  • A drying machine for discarded Citrus scrap was developed in this study. The Citrus produced in Jeju Province was treated as wastes (a) after making a beverage, such as drinking juice, and (b) if the size of the product did not fit with its agricultural product criteria. Various types of drying machine were developed in this study, and different kinds of technologies were combined improve the performance. To enhance the performance, the system was maintained in a vacuum state, and a high frequency micro wave was activated to the waste Citrus scrap, to heat up the moisture inside the Citrus kernels. The frequency of the micro-wave was 2.6 GHz, which is the resonant frequency of the molecules. Experiments were conducted with a vacuum of 50, 100, 150, 300, 500, and 700 mbar. The waste Citrus scrap has two types of status : (a) original scrap, and (b) mixed with blender. As results, specimen (a) shows a 0.13 g/sec evaporation rate, while specimen (b) shows a 0.19 g/sec rate, at 50 mbar of environment vacuum condition. For the drying efficiency, specimens (a) and (b) show 0.15 g/W and 0.24 g/W, respectively.
