  • This paper proposes a modified method of Latin Hypercube sampling to reduce the variance of statistical parameters in uncertainty analysis of concrete structures. The proposed method is a modification of Latin Hypercube sampling method. This analysis method uses specifically modified tables of random permutations of ranked numbers. In addition, the Spearman coefficient is used to make modified tables. Numerical analysis is carried out to predict the uncertainty of axial shortening in prestressed concrete bridge. Statistical parameters obtained from modified Latin Hypercube sampling method and conventional Latin Hypercube sampling method are compared and evaluated by a numeric analysis. The results show that the proposed method results in a decrease in the variance of statistical parameters. This indicates the method is efficient and effective in the uncertainty analysis of complex structural system such as prestressed concrete bridges.

  • The tomography has played a key role in tokamak plasma diagnostics for image reconstruction. The Phillips-Tikhonov (P-T) regularization method was attempted in this work to reconstruct cross-sectional phantom images of the plasma by minimizing the gradient between adjacent pixel data. Recent studies about the comparison of the several tomographic reconstruction methods showed that the P-T method produced more accurate results. We have studied existing Laplacian matrix used in Phillips-Tikhonov regularization method and developed modified Laplacian matrix (Modified L). The comparison of the reconstruction result by the modified L and existing L showed that modified L produced more accurate result. The difference was significantly pronounced when a portion of plasma was reconstructed. These results can be utilized in the Edge Plasma diagnostics; especially in divertor diagnostics on tokamak a large impact is expected. In addition, accurate reconstruction results from received data in only one direction were confirmed through phantom test by using P-T method with modified L. These results can be applied to the tangentially viewing pin-hole camera diagnostics on tokamak.

  • In This study we examine the applicability of Newton's method and the modified Newton's method for a, pp.oximating a lo-cally unique solution of a nonlinear equation in a Banach space. We assume that the newton-Kantorovich hypothesis for Newton's method is violated but the corresponding condition for the modified Newton method holds. Under these conditions there is no guaran-tee that Newton's method starting from the same initial guess as the modified Newton's method converges. Hence it seems that we must always use the modified Newton method under these condi-tions. However we provide a numerical example to demonstrate that in practice this may not be a good decision.

  • Purpose: Glomerular filtration rate is an important index for assessment of renal function, early discovery of renal disease, and progress observation of chronic renal disease patients. In the present study, the objective is to conduct a comparative analysis of differences between Gates and Modified Gates method in dynamic renal scintigraphy based on MDRD (Modification of Diet Renal Disease) formula using blood collection. Materials and Methods: Renal scintigraphy was performed for 45 patients who visited our hospital between November 2010 and August 2011. For 20 patients of those tested, glomerular filtration rates from Gates method and MDRD formula using AGUS equipment, were compared. For the other 20 patients, glomerular filtration rates from Modified Gates method and MDRD formula using INFINIA equipment. Finally, Gates and Modified Gates method were compared for 5 patients who indicated no change in glomerular filtration rates from MDRD formula during progress observation. Results: Glomerular filtration rates from both Gates and Modified Gates method showed a high correlation with those from MDRD formula ($p$<0.01, r=0.903, r=0.867), with a paired difference mean for Gates method of $2.05{\pm}2.54mL/min/1.73m$, and that for Modified Gates method of $25.2{\pm}3.71mL/min/1.73m$. Finally, the values for Gates method and those for Modified Gates method showed a high correlation for the five patients ($p$<0.05, r=0.949), with a paired difference mean of $20.4{\pm}8.84mL/min/1.73m$. Conclusion: Glomerular filtration rates from Gates method, Modified Gates method and MDRD formula showed mutually high correlations. If the tests are performed with recognition for the correlations between Gates and Modified Gates method used in a dynamic renal scintigraphy, then an accurate assessment of renal function is considered possible with an improved diagnostic ability.

  • This paper presents computed frost penetration depths for a number of cross sections of multilayered system including insulation. Results of Modified Berggren method were compared with those of numerical analysis which is based on finite element method with phase change. For the homogeneous single layer medium, Modified Berggren method gives almost the same results as finite element based numerical method. For the multilayered systems with insulation, Modified Berggren method shows, however, inaccurate results compared with FEM results. Therefore numerical solution based on finite element or finite difference should be used in place of Modified Beggren method to estimate the frost penetration depth for the layered medium with insulation.

  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate effectiveness of the modified position in scapular AP (anteriopo-sterior) projection. Materials and Methods: From June 2012 to July 2013, scapular AP projection was examined in 108 patients by use of conventional method and in 40 patients by use of modified method. We compared between conventional method and modified method following variables including sex, age, height, weight, and BMI. We measured and compared distance between lateral border of the scapular and the rib to confirm the separation of the scapular from the lung fields including the ribs. Results: The scapular AP projection was technically successful in all patients. There was no significant difference in patient characteristics including sex, age, height, weight, and BMI between conventional method and modified method. The mean distance between lateral border of the scapular and rib in conventional method and modified method was 15.09 mm and 26.33 mm, respectively. Modified method was significantly increased the distance between lateral border of the scapular and rib compared with conventional method (P < .01). Conclusion: The modified position in scapular AP projection was effective method to separate between the scapular and lung fields including the ribs compared with conventional position of scapular AP projection.

  • This paper developed 3 flow-shop sequencing heuristic methods: modified RA method, modified RACS method and modified RAES method. These methods modified RA method, RACS method and RAES method developed by D. G. Dannenbring. These methods can easily determine desirable sequence of orders and can improve nx3 flow-shop's productivity and efficiency. The maximum flow-time criterion is selected as the evaluation criterion of flow-shop's efficiency, We evaluated these 6 heuristic methods’ performance. By the evaluation of the result, we can see that the modified methods produce a shorter maximum flow-time than the original methods.

  • In 1998, Food and Agriculture Organization addressed that FAO Modified Penman method possibly over-estimates consumptive use of water comparing to the measured reference crop evapotranspiration (PET) and Penman-Monteith method can be better choice for accurate PET estimation. Nevertheless it is still difficult to find research efforts about paddy rice crop coefficient for Penman-Monteith method. This study aims to estimate paddy rice crop coefficients for Penman-Monteith and FAO modified Penman methods in the manner of comparing two equations. To estimate the crop coefficients, measured evapotranspiration data during 1982-1986 and 1995-1997 were used. The average Penman-Monteith crop coefficients ranged from 0.78 to 1.58 for translated paddy rice and from 0.87 to 1.74 for flood-direct seeded paddy rice. The average FAO Modified Penman crop coefficients ranged from 0.65 to 1.35 for translated paddy rice and from 0.70 to 1.58 for flood-direct seeded paddy rice.

  • The finite volume time domain(FVTD) technique faces serious limitations in simulating electromagnetic scattering at high frequencies due to requirements related to discretization. A modified FVTD method is proposed for electrically large, perfectly conducting scatterers by partially incorporating a time-domain physical optics(PO) approximation for the surface current. Dominant specular returns in the modified FVTD method are modeled using a PO approximation of the surface current allowing for a much coarser discretization at high electrical sizes compared to the original FVTD scheme. This coarse discretization can be based on the minimum surface resolution required for a satisfactory numerical evaluation of the PO integral for the scattered far-field. Non-uniform discretization and spatial accuracy can also be used in the context of the modified FVTD method. The modified FVTD method is aimed at simulating electromagnetic scattering from geometries containing long smooth illuminated sections with respect to the incident wave. The computational efficiency of the modified FVTD method for higher electrical sizes are shown by solving two-dimensional test cases involving electromagnetic scattering from a circular cylinder and a symmetric airfoil.

  • A simulation method called modified differential transform is studied to solve the free vibration problems of uniform Euler-Bernoulli beam. First of all, the modified differential transform method is derived. Secondly, the modified differential transformation is applied to uniform Euler-Bernoulli beam free-free vibration. And then a set of differential equations are established. Through algebraic operations on these equations, we can get any natural frequency and normalized mode shape. Thirdly, the FEM is applied to obtain the numerical solutions. Finally, mode experimental method (MEM) is conducted to obtain experimental data for analysis by signal processing with LMS Test.lab Vibration testing and analysis system. Experimental data and simulation results are illustrated to be in comparison with the analytical solutions. The results show that the modified differential transform method can achieve good results in predicting the solution of such problems.
