Differences in Body Weight, Dietary Efficiency, Brain Obesity Control Factor (AMPK), Reactive Oxygen Species (MDA), and Antioxidant Enzymes (SOD) in Young Mice According to the Intensity of Aerobic Exercise for 8 Weeks (8주간의 유산소 운동강도에 따른 어린 생쥐의 체중, 식이효율, 뇌의 비만조절 인자(AMPK), 활성산소(MDA), 항산화효소(SOD)의 차이)

  • Purpose: The goal of this study was to see how different aerobic exercise intensities affected AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), reactive oxygen, and antioxidant enzymes in young mice during an 8-week period. Methods: Forty male C57BL/6 mice, aged seven weeks, were randomly assigned to one of four groups: control (n=10), low-intensity exercise (n=10), moderate-intensity exercise (n=10), and high-intensity exercise (n=10). For eight weeks, aerobic activity was performed once a day for 35-40 minutes, five days a week. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi-squared tests, and the Tukey test in the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: Weight (p=.001) was substantially different between the moderate-intensity exercise group and the control group in AMPK (p<.001). In addition, there were no significant differences between the moderate-intensity exercise group and the control group in reactive oxygen malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (p=.136) and antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels (p=.521). Conclusion: These findings suggest that moderate-intensity aerobic exercise increased AMPK activation and helped young mice shed weight.

Systematic Review of TCM on Moderate to Severe Obese Patients with Hypertension in Chinese Medical Journal (CNKI) (고혈압을 동반하는 중고도 비만 환자의 중의학 임상연구 체계적 고찰: CNKI 검색을 중심으로)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review clinical studies related to the effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on moderate to severe obese patients with hypertension. Methods: Clinical studies from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were searched by specific keywords and criteria. Total of 7 randomized controlled trials were selected and analyzed. Results: Various evaluation methods were used to see the effect of TCM compared to conventional western medicine. Most of the studies used herbal medicine combined with conventional anti-hypertensive western medicine. The effective rate of anti-hypertension was higher when TCM was added to conventional anti-hypertensive medicine. Traditional medicine treatment showed significant effect on lowering blood pressure and body mass index. Conclusions: Based on the results of the clinical studies from China, TCM can be a valuable option for moderate to severe obese patients with hypertension. Applying Traditional medicine has a significant effect on lowering blood pressure and weight loss. Combining herbal medicine can be worthy of clinical promotion and application for moderate and severe obese patients with hypertension.

  • To find the relation between exercise and cytokines, we examined the effect of the training intensity on the levels of cytokines, including interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interlukine-4 (IL-4) and interlukine-4/interferon-gamma ratio (IL-4/IFN-γ ratio) in female Futsal players. Twelve well-trained female college Futsal players aged 19~22 participated in this study. The athletes completed 30-min of running at 60~65% maximal heart rate [moderate-intensity exercise], and 30-min of running at 75~80% maximal heart rate [high-intensity exercise]. peripheral blood samples were collected 24 h before and 24 h and 48 h after each of the exercise bouts. finding showed that The 30-min bout of moderate-intensity exercise induced a significant increase in IFN-γ (p=0.01) and significant decreases in IL-4 (p=0.001) and IL-4/IFN-γ ratio (p=0.003). And also, 30-min of running at 75~80% maximal heart rate induced increase in IFN-γ (p=0.07) and decreased in IL-4 (p=0.01) and IL-4/IFN-γ ratio (p=0.06) that these changes not significantly. In summary, exercise intensity can effect on the magnitude of changes in cytokines. It seems that moderate intensity exercise enhances cytokine pattern in female college Futsal players.

Moderate and Deep Hypothermia Produces Hyporesposiveness to Phenylephrine in Isolated Rat Aorta

  • Background: Moderate and severe hypothermia with cardiopulmonary bypass during aortic surgery can cause some complications such as endothelial cell dysfunction or coagulation disorders. This study found out the difference of vascular reactivity by phenylephrine in moderate and severe hypothermia. Methods: Preserved aortic endothelium by excised rat thoracic aorta was sectioned, and then down the temperature rapidly to $25^{\circ}C$ by 15 minutes at $38^{\circ}C$ and then the vascular tension was measured. The vascular tension was also measured in rewarming at $25^{\circ}C$ for temperatures up to $38^{\circ}C$. To investigate the mechanism of the changes in vascular tension on hypothermia, NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl esther (L-NAME) and indomethacin administered 30 minutes before the phenylephrine administration. And to find out the hypothermic effect can persist after rewarming, endothelium intact vessel and endothelium denuded vessel exposed to hypothermia. The bradykinin dose-response curve was obtained for ascertainment whether endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization factor involves decreasing the phenylnephrine vascular reactivity on hypothermia. Results: Fifteen minutes of the moderate hypothermia blocked the maximum contractile response of phenylephrine about 95%. The vasorelaxation induced by hypothermia was significantly reduced with L-NAME and indomethacin administration together. There was a significant decreasing in phenylephrine susceptibility and maximum contractility after 2 hours rewarming from moderate and severe hypothermia in the endothelium intact vessel compared with contrast group. Conclusion: The vasoplegic syndrome after cardiac surgery might be caused by hypothermia when considering the vascular reactivity to phenylephrine was decreased in the endothelium-dependent mechanism.

OCCLUSAL ANALYSIS OF PATIENTS WITH TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DYSFUNCTION BY USE OF T-SCAN SYSTEM (T-Scan system을 이용한 측두하악 장애 환자의 교합 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Fifteen dental college students of Chosun University without the abnormal occlusion, the history and symptom of temporomandibular dysfunction(TMD), and who had all permanent teeth except third molar and the fifteen moderate group and the fifteen severe group classified according to Helkimo's dysfunction index among patients on the basis of the symptom of TMD were selected. The occlusal contact, occlusal force and occlusal interference in eccentric movement was studied and analyzed using T-Scan system. The result were as follows : 1. The TLR centering around midsagittal axis was located at $1.42{\pm}0.82mm$ in control group, $3.36{\pm}1.45mm$ in severe group, and as TMD was heavier, occlusal contact was located at the farther point from midsagittal axis. 2. The PLR from the first contact to the fifth contact centering around midsagittal axis was located at $1.73{\pm}1.78mm$ in control group, $3.36{\pm}1.41mm$ in moderate group, and $5.39{\pm}4.32mm$ in severe group, and as TMD was heavier, occlusal contact was located at the farther point from midsgittal axis. 3. The TFB, PFB, RFB and LFB of occlusal contact centering around incisal axis had no significant difference statistically among control group, moderate group, and severe group, and it was located at first molar. 4.The LF and RF was smaller in TMD group than in control group. 5. The LR moment of occlusal force centering around midsagittal axis was located at $178.51{\pm}139.81N.mm$ in control group, $466.25{\pm}296.47N.mm$ in moderate group, and $749.18{\pm}588.18N.mm$ in severe group. And as TMD was heavier, it was located at the farther point from midsagittal axis. 6. The RL and LL of occlusal force centering around incisal axis had not-significance statistically among control group, moderate group, and severe group, and it was at the first molar. 7. The number of occlusal interference of the eccentric movement was increased in the patients of TMD.

Change of Radiologic Index of Foot according to Radiation Projection Angle: A Study Using Phantom Foot (방사선 투과 각도에 따른 족부 방사선 지표의 변화: Phantom Foot을 이용한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the measurement differences of simple radiographs according to radiation projection angle using a phantom and to propose methods for objective analysis of simple radiographs. Materials and Methods: We took simple radiographs with different projection angles using a C-arm image intensifier and measured five parameters of the foot on the simple radiographic images. Five parameters include lateral tibiocalcaneal angle, lateral talocalcaneal angle, naviculocuboid overlap, lateral talo-first metatarsal angle, and lateral calcaneo-first metatarsal angle. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability were verified, and then intraclass correlations of parameters were analyzed. Results: Radiographic parameters of the foot showed high intraobserver and interobserver reliability. Lateral tibiocalcaneal angle has a strong negative linear relationship with rotation and a moderate negative linear relationship with tilt. Lateral talocalcaneal angle has a moderate positive linear relationship with rotation and a strong positive linear relationship with tilt. Naviculocuboid overlap has a strong positive linear relationship with rotation and a moderate positive linear relationship with tilt. Lateral talo-first metatarsal angle does not have a linear relationship with rotation and a moderate negative linear relationship with tilt. Lateral calcaneo-first metatarsal angle has a moderate positive linear relationship with rotation and tilt. Conclusion: More precise evaluation of the foot with a simple radiograph can be performed by understanding the changes of radiographic parameters according to radiation projection angle.

  • The effectiveness, the safety and the usefulness of HPS-A(An Jung San with Chyag Yag Kam Cho Tang), herbal digestive, was examined on 32 patients complained digestive symptoms. This medicine was administered 1 package per 1 time 3 times per 1 day, during 2 weeks. From the examination of the improvemnt and the safety mainly by subjective symptoms, the usefulness was gained. The results were as follows ; 1. In the improvement rate of susbjective symptoms, high rate symptoms was gastric distension, anorexia, heart burn, gastric discomport, dyspepsia, acrid eructation, indigestion, nausea. 2. The improvment over moderate effective was 85.7% after 1 week 96.4% after 2 weeks. The 4 cases breaked medicine during experimental period were all over moderate offectiveness. 3. There weren't any cases complaind particular problem about safety except for 1 case complained mild pushing up of heat. There weren't also any side effect of medicine on common blood count, blood chemistry and urinalysis. 4. In the dicision of usefulness, 19cases(59.4%) were usefulnesss, 12cases(37.5%) were moderate usefulness, 1 case was uselessness(3.1%). So the cases over moderate usefulness were 31 and rate was 96.9%. 5. The usefulness rates according to physical features were all over 95.5% in sturdiness, middle feature and infirmity. So the rates were no relations with the features. 6. The usefulness rates over moderate usefulness according to total seriousness were all over 90% in high, middle, and mild cases. So the rates were no relations with the seriousness. Totally HPS-A was a medicine that was highly effective, safe and useful to patients complained various digestive symptomes.

Follow Up Study of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Patients Underwent Partial Release of Transverse Carpal Ligament Using Inching Test (인칭검사를 이용하여 부분 절개를 시행한 수근관 증후군 환자의 추적관찰)

  • Purpose: Complete release of the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) is accepted as the standard treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, loss of grip and pinch power are reported in some patients after complete release of the TCL. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of complete versus partial carpal tunnel release by using the inching technique. Methods: Nineteen patients (a total of 27 hands) who each had a confirmed diagnosis of CTS were selected from September 2002 to February 2003. The cases were divided into three groups(mild, moderate and severe) based on preoperative electrodiagnostic studies. The patients with partial carpal tunnel syndrome were classified into the mild or moderate groups, while patients with complete carpal tunnel syndrome were classified into the moderate or severe groups. Patient oriented data (functional and symptomatic) were collected and electrophysiologic studies were undertaken preoperatively and postoperatively(on the 2nd week, 1st month, 3rd month and 6th month after surgery).Results: In this study, the mild and moderate groups showed both good functional and symptomatic results and improvements in electrophysiologic studies.Conclusion: Carpal tunnel syndrome patients classified into mild or moderate groups based on nerve conduction studies, and whose precise compression sites were pinpointed using the inching technique, can be treated by partial carpal tunnel release.

Experimental Studies for the Prevention of Pericardial Adhesion with Urokinase and Dextran 40 (Urokinase 와 Dextran 40 을 이용한 심막유착 방지에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Pericardial adhesions following open heart surgery pose a special problems, increasing the risk of cardiac reoperation because of the danger of damaging the heart, coronary artery and veins, or grafts and also the fibrous tissue may obliterate the pericardial space and eventually constrict the heart. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of intrapericardial urokinase and dextran 40 on the formation of pericardial adhesions in an animal model. latrogenic traumas on the pericardium were surgically induced in 30 rabbits, simulating injuries possible during actual surgery. In all rabbits, blood [1 ml] was obtained from an ear vessel and injected into the pericardium. Control group of ten rabbits did not receive any further medication, urokinase group of ten received 15, 000-20, 000 IU of urokinase, and remained ten received 1 ml of 10% dextran 40. All rabbits were sacrificed at 4 weeks. At autopsy, the development of adhesions were graded as none [Grade I], minimal [Grade II], moderate [Grade III], and severe [Grade IV]. Histological studies of the parietal pericardium and epicardium were performed. The results were as follows: 1. Group 1[Control group] showed minimal adhesion in 40%, moderate in 50%, and severe in 10% of the group. Sharp dissections were necessary in 60% of adhesions. 2. Group II [Dextran group] showed no adhesions in 20%, minimal in 60%, and moderate in 20% of the group. 3. Group III [Urokinase group] showed no adhesions in 40%, minimal in 40%, and moderate in 20% of the group. Considering in this group, the adhesion activity was significantly suppressed [60% adhesions] compared to the control group [100% adhesions] [P < 0.05]. 4. Histological findings revealed mild serosal fibrosis in none adherent group, loose fibrous connections between two layers of pericardium in minimal adhesion group, tight fibrous connections in moderate adhesion group, and marked fibrous thickening and close attachment of two surfaces were noted in severe adhesion group. These data have revealed the decreased incidence of pericardial adhesions with urokinase and dextran 40.

Influence of Energy Level and Glycine Supplementation on Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Egg Quality in Laying Hens

  • Sixty four, 30-week-old, Lohmann Brown-Lite laying hens were randomly allocated to one of four treatments with eight replicates per treatment and two hens per replicate for a 10 week study. The control diet was a high energy (11.81 MJ/kg) diet and the moderate energy (11.39 MJ/kg) diets were formulated dropping the level of animal fat. The three moderate energy diets were fed either unsupplemented (0.0%) or supplemented with 0.05 or 0.10% glycine. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) in hen-day egg production, egg weight, feed intake or feed conversion between birds fed the unsupplemented moderate energy and high energy diets. Significant differences were detected concerning egg components and quality measurements as assessed by albumen percentage (p = 0.02), yolk weight (p = 0.02), yolk percentage (p<0.01), yolk to albumen ratio (p<0.01) and yolk color (p = 0.01) between birds fed the unsupplemented moderate and high energy diets. Glycine supplementation of the moderate energy diet linearly increased (p<0.01) egg weight and feed intake with no significant (p>0.05) effects on egg production or feed conversion. Glycine supplementation significantly increased egg content (p<0.01), albumen weight (p<0.01) and percentage (p<0.01) as well as yolk weight (p<0.01) while yolk percentage (p = 0.04), yolk to albumen ratio (p = 0.01) and egg shell percentage (p<0.01) were linearly decreased. Supplementation with glycine produced a tendency (p = 0.09) towards an increase in the percentage of large eggs (63-72.9 g) produced with a concomitant decrease in the percentage of small (below 53 g) eggs (p = 0.09). The overall results of this study indicate that glycine supplementation of laying hen rations has the potential to increase egg production and weight. These increases appeared to be mediated through increases in feed intake and the ileal digestibility of fat and energy.
