A methodology for development of seismic fragility curves for URBM buildings

  • This paper presents a simple methodology that integrates an improved storey shear modelling, Incremental Dynamic Analysis and Monte Carlo Simulation in order to carryout vulnerability analysis towards development of fragility curves for Unreinforced Brick Masonry buildings. The methodology is demonstrated by developing fragility curves of a single storey Unreinforced Brick Masonry building for which results of experiment under lateral load is available in the literature. In the study presented, both uncertainties in mechanical properties of masonry and uncertainties in the characteristics of earthquake ground motion are included. The research significance of the methodology proposed is that, it accommodates a new method of damage grade classification which is based on 'structural performance characteristics' instead of 'fixed limiting values'. The usefulness of such definition is discussed as against the existing practice.

  • In this paper force feedback control system is investigated for improving the quality of the haptic feedback in virtual reality applications. We suggested the method of controlling the haptic device and modelling the virtual environment. Haptic device is composed of five bar link structure, voice coil motor, control board, and virtual environment modeling program. We applied voice coil motor in the actuating system for simple structure and easy control. Virtual environment modelling is constructed in PC, and the control signals of the actuators and the encoder data are transferred to the control system through USB. Experiment is performed to evaluate the characteristics of the haptic device.

  • 최근 다구찌 실험에 대한 관심이 고조되어 일반화 선형모형에서 평균과 분산의 동시모형화가 연구되고 있다. 하나의 자료 변환만으로는 자료분석에 필요한 모든 조건들을 만족시킬 수 없기 때문에 다구찌 품질실험의 자료들을 일반화 선형모형으로 분석하는 것이 바람직하다. 본 논문에서는 이 자료변환법과 일반선형모형을 이용한 분석법을 소개, 비교하고 일반화 선형모형을 다구찌 자료에 적용할 수 있는 GLIM 프로그램을 제시한다.

Diffuser내의 정상 캐비테이션 유동 해석을 위한 수학 모델링 (Mathematical Modelling of Steady Cavitation Flow inside the Diffuser)

  • 본 연구에서는 Diffuser내의 점성액체 유동을 해석하기 위해 사용된 수학 모델을 소개하며, 또한 복잡한 캐비테이션 유동을 해석하기 위해 방정식 시스템을 간략화하고 이에 적용된 가설을 고찰하였다. 캐비테이션 정상 유동을 해석하기 위하여 물리영역을 무차원 영역으로 좌표 변환하고 계산 영역에서 다중 격자를 형성하였다. 이와 같은 방정식의 차분화와 다중 격자 방정식 시스템의 계산 알고리듬을 이용하여 정상 캐비테이션 유동을 해석하였으며 그 결과 시험과 계산이 잘 일치됨을 확인하였다.

Dynamic characterisation of a two-link flexible manipulator: theory and experiments

  • This paper presents theoretical and experimental investigations into the dynamic modelling and characterisation of a two-link flexible manipulator incorporating payload. A planar two-link flexible manipulator that moves in a horizontal plane is considered. A dynamic model of the system is developed using a combined Euler-Lagrange and assumed mode methods, and simulated using Matlab. Experiments are performed on a lab-scaled two-link flexible manipulator for validation of the dynamic model and characterisation of the system. Two system responses namely hub angular position and deflection responses at both links are obtained and analysed in time and frequency domains. The effects of payload on the dynamic characteristics of the flexible manipulator are also studied and discussed. The results show that a close agreement between simulation and experiments is achieved demonstrating an acceptable accuracy of the developed model.

Aeroelastic tailoring using crenellated skins-modelling and experiment

  • Aeroelastic performance controls wing shape in flight and its behaviour under manoeuvre and gust loads. Controlling the wing‟s aeroelastic performance can therefore offer weight and fuel savings. In this paper, the rib orientation and the crenellated skin concept are used to control wing deformation under aerodynamic load. The impact of varying the rib/crenellation orientation, the crenellation width and thickness on the tip twist, tip displacement, natural frequencies, flutter speed and gust response are investigated. Various wind-off and wind-on loads are considered through Finite Element modelling and experiments, using wings manufactured through polyamide laser sintering. It is shown that it is possible to influence the aeroelastic behaviour using the rib and crenellation orientation, e.g., flutter speed increased by up to 14.2% and gust loads alleviated by up to 6.4%. A reasonable comparison between numerical and experimental results was found.

CFD study of the PTS experiment in ROCOM test facility

  • With the aging of nuclear reactors, embrittlement of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel, as a consequence of routine operations, is highly probable. To ensure operational integrity and safety, prediction and mitigation of compromising damage, brought on by pressurized thermal shock (PTS) following an emergency procedure, is of utmost importance. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes can be employed to predict these events and have therefore been an acceptable method for such assessments. In this paper, CFD simulations of a density driven ECC state in the ROCOM facility are analyzed. Obtained numerical results are validated with the experimental measurements. Considerable attention is attributed to the boundary conditions and their influence, specifically outlet definitions, in order to determine and adequately replicate the non-active pumps in the facility. Consequent analyses focused on initial conditions as well as on the temporal discretization and inner iterations. Disparities due to different turbulent modelling approaches are investigated for standard RANS models. Based on observed trends for different cases, a definitive simulation setup has been established, results of which have been ultimately compared to the measurements.

  • In this paper, an experimental study of a hot forging process is carried out using plasticine and the die set manufactured with the aid of rapid prototyping. In order to manufacture the die set, Stereolithography Apparatus(SLA) which is most widely used rapid prototyping system is introduced. Turbine blade forging is performed using palsticine and the SLA prototype die set. Through the experiment, it has been shown that SLA prototype is suitable to the die set for the plasticine workpiece, and the formability and the forming load of turbine blade forging are predicted.

  • This paper proposes a new fuzzy controller using variable structure control theory. In this paper, after the time-varying fuzzy sliding surface is designed, the fuzzy rules are defined based on the variable structure control theory. This design method makes the fuzzy controller design more structured and can guarantee the stability and robustness of the fuzzy controller and overcome the shortcoming of the variable structure system. Through computer simulation and experiment of nonlinear inverted pendulum system, this thesis demonstrate that system has the robustness against disturbance and modelling error, and the tracking performance of it is improved.

  • It is expected that utility interactive small scale dispersed PV system will be widely diffused in the future. This paper discussed the design and control method of single phase PV inverter system with compensation capability of reactive power including harmonic distortion, based on state space modelling. As the results, compensation effects were suggested by simulation and experiment.
