A study on the behaviour of fibre reinforced concrete deep beams with and without web openings is carried out using nonlinear finite element analysis. Eight node isoparametric plane stress elements are employed to model the fibre reinforced concrete materials. Steel bars are treated using a compatible three node truss elements. The constitutive equations for fibre reinforced concrete materials take into account the softening effect of co-existing shear strains. Element stiffness at each step is formulated based on the tangent modulus at the current level of principal strains. Transformation between principal directions and global coordinate system is imposed. Comparison of analytical results with experimental values indicates reasonably good agreement. The proposed numerical model can be used to study the behaviour of this composite structures of practically any geometries.

In evaluating the ultimate strength of a section for a concrete flexural member, the effect of member length is not usually considered, even though the strength tends to decrease with increase of member length. In this paper the influence of specimen length on flexural compressive strength of concrete was evaluated. For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compression and bending moment were tested using four different length-to-depth ratios(from 1, 2, 3 and 4) of specimens with compressive strength of 58 MPa. Results indicate that the reduction in flexural compressive strength with increase of length-to-width ratios was apparent. A model equation was derived using regression analyses on the experimental data. It was also founded that the effect of specimen length on ultimate strain was negligible, but its effect of the ultimate load and the displacement at center of specimen was distinct. Finally more general model equation is also suggested.

Currently, in evaluating a flexural strength of a concrete member, the effect of specimen depth has not been systematically studied, even though its effect on ultimate strength of a section is very important. For all types of loading conditions, the trend is that the strength of a member tends to decrease when the member depth increases. In this study, the influence of specimen depth on flexural compressive strength of concrete member was examined experimentally. A series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive force and bending moment were tested using three geometrically similar specimens with different length-to-depth ratios(h/c=1, 2 and 4) which have compressive strength of 55MPa. The results indicate that the flexural compressive strength decreased as the specimen depth increased. A model equation was derived based on regression analyses of the experimental data. Also the results show that ultimate strain decreases as the specimen depth increases. Finally, a general model equation for the depth effect is proposed.

Several experimental investigations have been carried out to study the behavior of reinforced concrete columns with short lap splices. However, very few analytical models have been developed for the analysis of such columns subjected to earthquakes. As nonlinear analysis procedures become more common in practice (such as those outlined in the Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the United States), the need for an accurate and reliable representation of the nonlinear response of strength degrading systems becomes more important. In this study, an analytical model for estimating the complete response of reinforced concrete columns with short lap splices is presented. The model is based on local bond stress-slip relationships and is validated against independent experimental data from cyclic loading tests on reinforced concrete columns with typical construction details of the 1960s. In this paper a simple equation for calculating the bar stress at splice failure is presented. Use of the proposed equation resulted in excellent agreement between the measured and calculated strength at splice failure.

Drying shrinkage have influence on the durability of concrete structure. Various models have been suggested to predict the drying shrinkage, experimentally. In this study, the drying shrinkage with Concrete strength and Curing condition was measured, and compared with representative model code. As a result, drying shrinkage was reduced as W/C ratio decrease, and total shrinkage greatly reduced in 4 week wet curing case. The test results agreed with EC2 model better than the other.

This study is aimed to evaluate the shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams subject to concentrated loads, using a simplified strut-tie model. For the shear strength prediction of deep beams, it is prerequisite to evaluate the effective width of strut and to verify the efficiency factors proposed by MacGregor et al.. The results analyzed by truss models have been compared with those calculated by domestic code for the existing data of 90 deep beam specimens. The shear strength of deep beams were reviewed with respect to concrete strength, the shear span-depth ratio, and the ratio of web reinforcements. The results showed that the shear strength of the proposed model gave a better agreement than the domestic code approach.

The basic prediction model was constructed to obtain optimal maintenance method for concrete structure under marine environment by exploring the mechanism of mono and combined deterioration in lab. This model was planned to be upgraded with data acquired from several exposure specimens under same environment as structures. The computer program developed to give useful guidance observer would be improved. Several repair materials and repair construction methods applied to exposure specimens will be tested for its performance of prohibit salt attack and freezing & thawing action during experimental period about ten years. All of these data could be available to complete the prediction system. The manager will be able to use the system for optimal maintenance of marine concrete structures.

Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRP) are used to enhance the behavior of structural components in either shear or flexure. The research conducted in this paper was mainly focused on the shear-strengthening of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams using FRP. The main objective of the research was to identify the parameters affecting the shear capacity provided by FRP and evaluate the accuracy of analytical models. A review of prior experimental data showed that the available analytical models used to estimate the added shear capacity of FRP struggle to provide a unified design equation that can predict accurately the shear contribution of externally applied FRP. In this study, the ACI 440.2R-$08^1$ model and the model developed by Triantafillou and Antonopoulos$^2$ were compared with the prior experimental data. Both analytical models failed to provide a satisfactory prediction of the FRP shear capacity. This study provides insights into potential reasons for the unsatisfactory prediction.
A mechanics model is developed in this paper for concrete-filled steel CHS (circular hollow section) beam-columns. A unified theory is described where a confinement factor (${\xi}$) is introduced to describe the composite action between the steel tube and the filled concrete. The predicted load versus deformation relationship is in good agreement with test results. The theoretical model was used to investigate the influence of important parameters that determine the ultimate strength of concrete-filled steel CHS beam-columns. The parametric and experimental studies provide information for the development of formulas for the calculation of the ultimate strength of the composite beam-columns. Comparisons are made with predicted beam-columns strengths using the existing codes, such as LRFD-AISC-1999, AIJ-1997, BS5400-1979 and EC4-1994.

Pipe cooling method is widely used for reduction of hydration heat and control of cracking in mass concrete structures. However, in order to effectively apply pipe cooling systems to concrete structure, the coefficient of flow convection relating the thermal transfer between inner stream of pipe and concrete must be estimated. In this study, a device measuring the coefficient of flow convection is developed. Since a variation of thermal distribution caused by pipe cooling has a direct effect in internal forced flows, the developed testing device is based on the internal forced flow concept. Influencing factors on the coefficient of flow convection are mainly flow velocity, pipe diameter and thickness, and pipe material. finally a prediction model of the coefficient of flow convection is proposed using experimental results from the developed device. According to the proposed prediction model, the coefficient of flow convection increases with increase in flow velocity and decreases with increase in pipe diameter and thickness. Also, the coefficient of flow convection is largely affected by the type of pipe materials.
