  • FRP has been used very much as high strength core materials for insulators because of its high strength and good insulation properties. In this study cantilever, tension and torsion stress were simulation along to the unidirection glass fiber. In addition, FRP was made by pultrusion method. This paper proposed the procedure of the finite element model updating and pretest using the commerical finite element code MSC.Nastran. To ehance the efficiency of experimental modal analysis. we proposed the process which is the selection of the locations and the number of measurement points for pre-test.

  • This is an investigation on the propagation characteristics of AE signal in GIS. The selection of measuring position and resonant frequency of AE sensor is one of the most important factor to optimize a diagnostic system. And natural frequency and harmonic response characteristics are indispensable to optimize those factors. So, in this investigation, we make a 3D model of 362kV GIS and make a modal and harmonic analysis to survey the vibro-acoustic property. Through the result of the analysis, we can make a further understanding on the vibro-acoustic characteristics of GIS.

  • In this paper, finite element modeling was performed for vibration analysis of a rotor system installed in sunroof motor, and analysis process was developed for natural frequency and unbalance response analysis. At the same time, to reduce analysis modeling error caused by the difference between analysis and measured values, finite element model updating was conducted using an optimization algorithm, i.e. hybrid genetic algorithm and simulated annealing (HGASA) method. For this end experimental modal test was carried out and by using the measured frequency response function (FRF), model updating was performed considering both cases where core coil was removed and included. And acceptable result was obtained. Also, dynamic property coefficient of bush bearing which influences vibration response of the rotor system was estimated.

  • In novelty detection, one attempts to discriminate abnormal patterns from normal ones. Novelty detection is quite difficult since, unlike usual two class classification problems, only normal patterns are available for training. Auto-Associative Multi-Layer Perceptron (AAMLP) has been shown to provide a good performance based upon the property that novel patterns usually have larger auto-associative errors. In this paper, we give a mathematical analysis of 2-layer AAMLP's output characteristics and empirical results of 2-layer and 4-layer AAMLPs. Various activation functions such as linear, saturated linear and sigmoid are compared. The 2-layer AAMLPs cannot identify non-linear boundaries while the 4-layer ones can. When the data distribution is multi-modal, then an ensemble of AAMLPs, each of which is trained with pre-clustered data is required. This paper contributes to understanding of AAMLP networks and leads to practical recommendations regarding its use.

  • This study was performed to verify that the impact vibration test on the damaged concrete pier can be adopted for assessment of the bridge substructure integrity. Using the experimental modal analysis, the dynamic property changes of the concrete pier are investigated according to the damage levels which are modeled by the loss of cross section area of the pier body. As a result of the impact vibration test, it is found that the natural frequency of the bridge substructure is reduced due to the damage on the pier such as loss of cross section area, and the natural frequency can be used for assessment of the integrity index.

  • The new type of vibration reduction material far an automotive interior, which is spray-type liquid material, is developed in this study The new material has better damping property and lower mass density than other damping materials, for example asphalt sheet. It can be sprayed by an automatic robot, so it is expected to improve productivity and cut down manpower. And it solves a poor adhesion problem and makes an automotive to be lightweight by optimizing spray process. So, It is a next generation automotive vibration reduction material. In this paper, the chemical process for making the new damping materials is described. And then, the damping properties of the vibration reduction materials are analyzed by modal testing of damping treatment specimens. The new vibration reduction materials have good damping properties than asphalt sheet in the experimental results.

  • This paper describes an efficient method of computing any desired number of the most unstable eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a large scale multi-machine power system. Approximate eigenvalues obtained by Hessenberg process are refined using Rayleigh quotient iteration with cubic convergence property. If further eigenvalues and eigenvectors are needed, the procedure described above are repeated with deflation. The proposed algorithm can cover all the model types of synchronous machines, exciters, speed governing system and PSS defined in AESOPS. The proposed algorithm applied to New England test system with 10 machines and 39 buses produced the results same with AESOPS in faster computation time. Also eigenvectors computed in Rayleigh quotient iteration makes it possible to make eigen-analysis for improving unstable modes.

  • Polytrimethylene Terephthalate (PTT) is an eco-fiber with good elastic properties; however, it requires more detailed studies related to spinnability according to blending of various kinds of fibers. The evolution of spinning technology was focused on improved productivity with good quality; in addition, air vortex spinning was recently invented and applied on the spinning factory as the facility with good productivity and quality. More detail spinning technology according to the blending of various kinds of fibers on the air vortex spinning system is required to obtain good quality yarns for high emotional fabrics. In this paper, the physical properties of air vortex, compact and ring staple yarns using PTT/wool/modal blend fibers were investigated with yarn structure to promote high functional PTT that includes fabrics for high emotional garments. Unevenness of air vortex yarns was higher than those of compact and ring yarns; in addition, imperfections were greater than those of compact and ring yarns, which was attributed to a fascinated vortex yarn structure. Tenacity and breaking strain of air vortex yarns were lower than those of compact and ring yarns, caused by higher unevenness and more imperfections of air vortex yarns compared to compact and ring yarns. Vortex yarns showed the highest initial modulus and ring yarns showed the lowest ones which results in a stiff tactile feeling of air vortex yarns in regards to the initial modulus of yarns. Dry and wet thermal shrinkages of air vortex yarns were lower than ring yarns. Good shape retention of vortex yarns was estimated due to low thermal shrinkage.

  • We have examined the applicability of f-k analysis to the GPR direct wave measurement for water content to characterize vadose zone condition. When the vadose zone consists of a dry surface layer over wet substratum, we obtained f-k spectra where most of the energy is bounded by the air and dry soil velocities. In this case, dry soil velocity was successfully estimated by using high frequency data. On the other hands, when wet soil overlies dry substratum, the f-k spectra show a contrasting response where most of the energy travels with the velocity bounded by dry and wet soil velocities. In this case, the radar waves are trapped and guided within wet soil layer, exhibiting velocity dispersion. By adopting modal propagation theory, we could formulae a simple inversion code to find two layer's dielectric constants as well as layer thickness. By inverting the velocity dispersion curve obtained from f-k spectra of synthetic modeling data, we could obtain good estimates of dielectric constants of each layer as well as first layer thickness. Moreover, we could obtain more accurate results by including the higher mode data. We expect this method will be useful to get the quantitative property of real subsurface when the field condition is similar.

  • This paper presents a rigorous comparison of the design characteristics of polarization-insensitive directional coupler (DC) and multimode interference (MMI) coupler based on rib type waveguides, by using longitudinal modal transmission-line theory (L-MTLT). It shows that the multimode mixing and interference property of MMI can be structurally designed through the continuous evolution of the two-mode coupling property of DC. It also compares and analyzes the coupling efficiency along with the coupling length and the wavelength between polarization-insensitive DC and MMI. From the design properties obtained, it demonstrates for the first time the integration of polarization-insensitive DC or MMI with a Bragg grating and evaluates precisely the filtering characteristics. The numerical results reveal that the DC, as long as it is designed to have the same coupling length for TE and TM modes, has better performance than the MMI in polarization-insensitive filtering behaviour. However, it shows that the MMI with much less coupling length than DC is preferred in the miniaturization of integrated devices.
