The existing experimental data related to the turbulent mixing factor in rod arrays is examined and a new definition of the turbulent mixing factor is introduced to take into account the turbulent mixing of fluids with various Prandtl numbers. The new definition of the mixing factor is based on the eddy diffusivity of energy. With this definition of the mixing factor, it was found that the geometrical parameter, ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ correlates the turbulent mixing data better than Sid, which has been used frequently in existing correlations. Based on the experimental data for a highly turbulent condition in square rod arrays, a correlation describing turbulent mixing dependent on the parameter ${\delta}_{ij}/D_h$ has been developed. The correlation is insensitive to the Re number and it takes into account the effect of the turbulent Prandtl number. The proposed correlation predicts a reasonable mixing even at a lower S/d ratio.
The purpose of a micro-mixing device is to enhance the mixing by increasing the diffusion effect between different types of flows. There have been many attempts to actively or passively increase mixing. However, those studies were limited to lab-scale experiments because the production of devices requires a series of processes, time, cost, and the mixing quality itself. For this reason, this study attempted to develop a quick and simple process for micro-mixing device fabrication by using conventional machining and bonding processes and applying ultrasonic waves from the outside of the mixing device. The mixing quality was quantified by using the mixing index, and the results showed that the proposed system increases the mixing from ~33% to ~10% with respect to the flow rates.
The purpose of this study is to cut down cost of production and improve the productivity of industry through quality improvement of castings and reduction of defectives by applying the experimental design to the foundry sand mixing operation done at molding department in the foundry. Among the related foundry sand mixing factors which have an effect on casting the experiment of which factors have a dominant effect on quality improvement was performed between two different levels by means of "$2^n$ type orthogonal array." The results cail be summarized as follows ; (1) The optimum conditions per each foundry sand mixing between two different levels proved to be such as $A_2$(used sand) : 24 unit (172.8kg), $B_2$(unused sand ) : 2 unit (15.0kg), $C_2$(binder) : 2.5 unit (4.4kg). $D_2$(addition agent) : 1 unit(1.4kg) and $F_1$(moisture) : 7.4%(14.6kg). (2) As a result of the application of experimental design, the fraction defective during the foundry sand mixing operation turned out to be reduced front 6.6% to 2.04%. (3) For the purpose of cost-down, It was found that the optimum level decision of foundry sand mixing for various castings is required to be made by means of experimental design.al design.
This study aims to analyze the high strength mortar's fundamental properties and autogenous shrinkage properties by taking into consideration the result of the previous study in which it was found that ERBO(Biodiesel) exercises greatest effect on the expansion effect of mortar, and changing the time and rate of mixing the ERBO. A total of five levels were set as experimental variables: the three levels of the rate of ERBO, 0, 0.5, 1.0%, and the two levels of the time of mixing the ERBO: first, adding the ERBO with the mixing water and mixing it before, and second, mixing it after the mortar is completely mixed. It was found that the rate of length change decreased as the rate of ERBO increased, and the rate of length change was lower when the ERBO was mixed sooner.
This article presents an application of a large-scale structural mixing model(Broadwell et at. 1984) to the blowout of turbulent reacting cross flow jets. Experimental observations, therefore, aim to identify the existence of large-scale vortical structure exerting an important effect upon the flame stabilization. In the analysis of common stability curve, it is seen that the phenomenon of blowout are only related to the mixing time scale of the two flows. The most notable observation is that the blowout distance is traced at a fixed positions according to the velocity ratio at all times. Measurements of the lower blowout limits in the liftable flame are qualitatively in agreement with the blowout parameter $\xi$, proposed by Broadwell et al. Good agrement between the results calculated by a modified blowout parameter $\xi$'and the present experimental results confirms the important effect of large-scale structure in the stabilization feature of blowout.
This research investigated the effect of individual yarn colors on the perception of overall colors of yarn-dyed woven fabrics. The way the colors of yarn-dyed woven fabrics are perceived is known as visual color mixing: when the different colored yarns juxtaposed on the fabric surface are observed from some distance away, they are visually mixed in our eyes and perceived as a solid color. However, we can still see individual yarn colors that make the fabrics look obviously different from actual solid colors. To quantify this visual color mixing effect, twenty-one sateen fabrics were produced in a wide range of colors using cyan, magenta, and yellow yarns, and the colors were measured instrumentally. The obtained colorimetric values were converted into solid color images on a CRT monitor. Then, the physical fabrics were scanned, and the scanned images were displayed on the monitor with solid color images in pairs for visual color difference evaluation. The woven and solid colors in each pair were of physically identical color; however, the visual color difference was as large as $4.81{\Delta}{E^*}_{ab}$ on average. A visual color difference model was proposed by considering this parametric effect of individual yarn colors.
Liquid phase mixing of impinging injector is a resultant byproduct from the momentum exchange between a pair of impinging jets and penetration of opponent jet. Principal aim of the present study is revealing the liquid phase mixing mechanism of split triplet impinging injection sprays, and thus extending our understanding on this particular injection element. Overall mixing extent is estimated from patternation tests by the use of purified tap water and kerosene to simulate the real propellant components, respectively, and with the liquid jet momentum ratio, a controlling mixing parameter, in the range of 0.5 to 6.0. Emphasis is placed on the effect of liquid sheet superposition and disintegration, and the results with detailed spray visualization revealed the fact that superposed liquid sheet disintegration is the main pathway of liquid phase mixing of split triplet impinging injector to yield enhanced mixing qualities.
Fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) has been successfully used to enhance the flexural toughness of concrete. As fibers are randomly oriented in FRC, they sometimes produce clumps that reduce the mechanical performance, and a properly chosen mixing protocol can be a way to minimize this problem. In this research, the effects of mixing method on the mechanical properties of FRC were investigated. The compressive strength, flexural strength, and flexural toughness were measured using three different mixing methods. It was shown from the results that the compressive strength and peak flexural load were not affected by changes in mixing method. However, in terms of flexural toughness, the changes in mixing method clearly affected the flexural toughness of FRC. The truck-mixed FRC outperformed two pan-mixed FRCs.
Interface effects on properties of NTC thermistors having Mn-Co-O spinel crystal structure system are analyzed by a mixing rule in case of mixed types and layered types between CuO and Al$_2$O$_3$ added compounds. With adding CuO and Al$_2$O$_3$, The compounds form completely solid solution and their resistance and B constant are changed due to the variation of conduction electrons by their ionic substitutions. The properties of mixed NTC thermistors are depended on the logarithmic mixing rule by a dispersed phase and they show slightly lower values due to the lattice mixing affect in compared with calculated values. The resistance of layered NTC thermistors is depended upon the series mixing rule containing the value of an interface layer and effected by the variation of its thickness, and it is changed rapidly to the logarithmic mixing rule by the connection between two layers with increasing the interface layer
