The most of conventional ultrasonic transducers are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves, but not both of them. We investigated the mechanism of dual mode transducers that generates both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with a single PZT element. The study has been aimed to find the desired cut by the examining the piezoelectric properties. Theory predicts that a mixed P/S mode transducer can be constructed using a related Z-cut of a PZT ceramics. We studied the performance of a PZT element as a function of its rotation angle so that its efficiency is optimized to excite the two waves equally strongly. The results are verified by checking the impedance variation of the element with Finite Element Methods, and chocking the wave form by pulse-echo test simulation. Based upon the theory a rotated Z-cut was prepared and a transducer were fabricated. Validity of the theory calculation is verified through the
Being a significant mode of deformation, shear effect in addition to the other modes of stretching and bending have been considered to develop two finite element models for the analysis of beams on elastic foundation. The first beam model is developed utilizing the differential-equation approach; in which the complex variables obtained from the solution of the differential equations are used as interpolation functions for the displacement field in this beam element. A single element is sufficient to exactly represent a continuous part of a beam on Winkler foundation for cases involving end-loadings, thus providing a benchmark solution to validate the other model developed. The second beam model is developed utilizing the hybrid-mixed formulation, i.e., Hellinger-Reissner variational principle; in which both displacement and stress fields for the beam as well as the foundation are approxmated separately in order to eliminate the well-known phenomenon of shear locking, as well as the newly-identified problem of "foundation-locking" that can arise in cases involving foundations with extreme rigidities. This latter model is versatile and indented for utilization in general applications; i.e., for thin-thick beams, general loadings, and a wide variation of the underlying foundation rigidity with respect to beam stiffness. A set of numerical examples are given to demonstrate and assess the performance of the developed beam models in practical applications involving shear deformation effect.
In this paper we consider the nonlinear parabolic problems with mixed boundary condition. Under comparatively mild conditions of the coefficients related to the problem, we construct the discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the solution to the nonlinear parabolic problem. We discretize spatial variables and construct the finite element spaces consisting of discontinuous piecewise polynomials of which the semidiscrete approximations are composed. We present the proof of the convergence of the semidiscrete approximations in $L^{\infty}(H^1)$ and $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ normed spaces.
Analysis of transverse stresses at layer interfaces in a composite laminate has always been a challenging task. Composite structures possess highly irregular material properties at layer interfaces, which cause high shear stresses. Classical Plate Theory and First Order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT) use post computing to calculate transverse stresses. This paper presents Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem (RMVT) based finite element model to carry out layer-wise analysis of composite laminates. Selective integration scheme has been used. The formulation has been validated by solving numerical examples and comparing the results with those published in the literature.
This paper discusses the development of a new optimization algorithm for DC motor design. In principle, the new algorithm utilizes a mixed method that consists of genetic algorithms in conjunction with direct search method. The genetic algorithms are used for locating the global optimum region while the direct search method is used to achieve objective function convergence. In order to validate the effectiveness, the new algorithm has been applied to an actual DC motor. Field and torque characteristics of the DC motor are computed using finite element method and the principle of virtual work, respectively.

A 1kW-class horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) rotor blade is taken into account to investigate elastic characteristics in 2-D. The elastic blade field is composed of symmetric cross-ply laminated composite material. Blade element momentum theory is applied to obtain the boundary conditions pressuring the blade, and the plane stress elasticity problem is formulated in terms of two displacement parameters with mixed boundary conditions. For the elastic characteristics a fair of differential equations are derived based on the elastic theory. The domain is divided by triangular and rectangular elements due to the complexity of the blade configuration, and a finite element method is developed for the governing equations to search approximate solutions. The results describe that the elastic behavior is deeply influenced by the layered angle of the middle laminate and the stability of the blade can be improved by controlling the layered angle of laminates, which can be evaluated by the mathematical approach.
The use of fracture mechanics has traditionally concentrated on crack growth under an opening mechanism. However, many service failure occur from cracks subjected to mixed mode loadings. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading. Under mixed mode loading conditions, not only the fatigue crack propagation rate is of importance, but also the crack propagation direction. The mode I and II stress intensity factors of CTS specimen were calculated using elastic finite element method. The propagation behavior of the fatigue crack of the STS304 steeds under mixed mode loading condition was evacuated by using stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_II. The MTS criterion and effective stress intensity factor were applied to predict the crack propagation direction and the fatigue crack propagation rate.
Accurate prediction of mixed ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face is of vital importance for safe excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Previous studies have primarily focused on electrical resistivity surveys from the ground surface for geotechnical investigation. In this study, an FE (finite element) numerical model was developed to simulate electrical resistivity surveys for the prediction of risky mixed ground conditions in front of a tunnel face. The proposed FE model is validated by comparing with the apparent electrical resistivity values obtained from the analytical solution corresponding to a vertical fault on the ground surface (i.e., a simplified model). A series of parametric studies was performed with the FE model to analyze the effect of geological and sensor geometric conditions on the electrical resistivity survey. The parametric study revealed that the interface slope between two different ground formations affects the electrical resistivity measurements during TBM excavation. In addition, a large difference in electrical resistivity between two different ground formations represented the dramatic effect of the mixed ground conditions on the electrical resistivity values. The parametric studies of the electrode array showed that the proper selection of the electrode spacing and the location of the electrode array on the tunnel face of TBM is very important. Thus, it is concluded that the developed FE numerical model can successfully predict the presence of a mixed ground zone, which enables optimal management of potential risks.
A 3D solid element mesh generation algorithm was newly developed. 3D surface points of global rectangular coordinates were supplied by a 3D laser scanner. The algorithm is strait forward and simple but it generates mixed solid elements such as hexagonal, pyramid and prism types. Then, the surface triangular or rectangular elements were generated from the solid elements. The key of the algorithm is elimination of elements and 3D adaptive surface smoothing using given 3D surface point data.
