Feasibility of Applying Mixed-Reality to Enhancing Safety Risk Communication in Construction Workplaces

  • Mixed-reality technologies have proven to be valuable in many architecture, engineering and construction / facilities management (AEC/FM) applications. However, its potential of being adapted to facilitate hazard identification and risk communication in construction workplaces has yet to be fully explored. This paper makes an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of applying mixed-reality to enhancing safety risk communication in construction workplaces. Experiments have been designed in which Microsoft HoloLens® together with a developed application will be used to intervene in the practice of jobsite risk communication. A cross-sectional survey will then be followed to examine the effectiveness and acceptability of this technology through analysis on data collected from participants in the construction industry. The preliminary results show that this emerging HoloLens® technology, compared to the traditional communication methods (i.e., phone calls, walking up people and talk, and video conferencing), facilitates accurate, prompt safety communication on construction sites. Such findings signify the potential of applying mixed-reality to safety performance enhancement in the construction industry.

  • In this paper, we review relevant technologies of Mixed Reality(MR) and show important components of perspective that can overcome technical limitations of the current MR. An MR technology combines real and virtual objects in a real environment, and runs interactive in real time, and is regarded as an emerging technology in a large part of the future of Information Technology(IT). We've grouped the major obstacles limiting the wider use of MR technologies into three themes: technological limitations (i,e., tracking, rendering, authoring, and registration), user interface(UI) limitations(i.e., UI metaphor for MR interaction), and social acceptance issues.

  • In these days, space design is evolving to the mixed reality space where fused on-line and off-line. But, standard and measure of mixed reality space has not been suggested and there has been little research about media environment and expression method as a mixed system either. That's why here I suggest four media environments and their characteristics that act not only as a critical point in the mixed reality space based on ubiquitous technology but also as a standard for spatial discerning. 1) Real space that is a media environment only seen by human visual and tactical sense is evolving using expression methods like new materials based on digital technology and LED. 2) Augmented reality space is a media environment using information instruments is expressed with diverse 2D and 3D contents. 3) Cyber Space is a environment depends totally on media instruments is produced by perfect graphic information without any spatial and physical limitations. 4) Augmented cyber space is realized only through the displays in cyber studio and is a space where real objects and graphic information are mixed. Depending on the purpose of the experience, media environment and expressional characteristics of mixed reality space can be fused, blended, and mixed, and that can be realized to the intelligent information space where one can experience without spatial, visual, informational limitations. In the future, studies on physical characteristics of contents according to the media environment characteristics are necessary.

  • Alongside the development of communication technologies such as smart phone, 5G, advertisements which have been regarded as nexus of marketing behaviors are treated as surplus entities in our society now. Ad marketers have been focusing on storytelling advertisements via SNS or similar web-services. We are facing another big media changes such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality. Especially the current study probes Mixed Reality as the potential key of new storytelling brand marketing with discussing directions and insights based on the narrative transportation theory.

  • Recently commercial mixed-reality devices have be launched and a variety of mixed-reality content has produced, but narrow field of view, which appear to be hardware technical limitations, are mentioned as an important issue for hindering immersion and limiting the scope of use. We propose a new innovative system that cooperate multiple beam projectors and a number of mixed reality devices. Using this technology, users can maximize immersion and minimize frustration of narrow viewing angles through 3D object rendering on background of large 2D screens. This system, named BtS (Beyond the Sight), is implemented on a client-server basis and includes the ability to calibrate between devices, share spatial coordinate systems, and synchronize real-time renderings as core modules. In this paper, each configuration module is described in detail and the possibility of its performance and application is shown through the introduction of mixed reality content case created using BtS system.

  • Mixed and augmented reality technique deals with mixing content between real world and virtual world containing augmented reality and augmented virtuality excluding of pure real and pure virtual world. In mixed and augmented reality, if a live actor and entity moving in real world can be embedded more naturally in 3D virtual world, various advanced applications such 3D tele-presence, 3D virtual experience education and etc can be serviced. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a standard model which is supporting to embed the live actor and entity into 3D virtual space, and to interact with each other. And also the natural embedding and interaction of live actor and entity can be performed based on the proposed model.

  • Recently, the introduction of the elementary and middle school software education essential courses in 2018, the emergence of educational solutions, and the need for digital content for software education rather than simple coding. In addition, in the case of current coding education, it is necessary to study how to induce interest in elementary, middle and high school students. In this study, we included the interactive (UX / UI) function using MR(Mixed Reality) and induced interest in coding education, and it was possible to cultivate logical thinking by applying storytelling coding rather than injection education. Suggested way. As a result of research, elementary, middle, and high school students easily proposed logical thinking education beyond the existing injection education method using mixed reality(MR) technology, and will break away from the injection coding education which is a problem of the school and school.

  • In an era where non-face-to-face meetings become common, eXtended Reality(XR) is rapidly developing and filling areas that are not satisfied in online meetings based on existing photos/video method. In particular, general users are also able to easily access and use HMD-type mixed reality devices. However, the basic operations applied in HMD-type in Mixed Reality(MR) with hands as the main input tool do not have a standardized system, and each manufacturer operates in a separate response to each other's hand movements. Therefore, this study considered that a systematic hand motion matching system considering the usability and efficiency of operations performed in mixed reality was necessary, and conducted a study to clarify this. First, the basic operation performed in the MR environment and its attributes were investigated, and at the same time, the structure of the hand and the attributes of the possible hand movements were identified. Based on the identified properties, it is intended to present a system that can intuitively and efficiently match basic operation properties in the MR environment with subtle operation properties according to the structure/context of the hand.

Financial Data Assessment Using Table-Graph-Mixed Reality Visualization

  • Usability and knowledge drawn from utilizing various ways of representing accounting data were examined. Classroom experiments were conducted to compare students' assessment of financial data using table of numbers, 2-dimensional column graphs (2D), 3-dimensional column graphs (3D), and mixed reality visualization of true 3-dimensional graphs (MR). The results showed that in assessing the financial status and performance of a firm, Table of numbers and MR took longer than 2D and 3D graphs. The time spent on true 3D graphs using MR technology was about the same as Table of numbers. When compared the assessment scores of the firm's financial status and performance between participants and experts, the difference was the least when participants used 2D graphs. However, MR was seen as being a new way to provide data of greater complexity and was very useful for financial information.

  • Learning system on virtual environment gives the immersive feeling that lacks in existing E-Learning system, excites user's interest, and offers dangerous and expensive education contents. In this paper, we classified the learning categories into four classes: realtime lecture, anytime study, practice education, and the activity of study group. We built the on-line lecture system using Second Life that supports 3D virtual world and mixed reality. We provided virtual learning environment as running developed virtual world on-line lecture system.
