  • It this study, beam-type bend specimen is used to evaluate the interlaminar fracture toughness of laminated composite under mixed-mode deformations. The specimen is loaded under three-point bending and hence produced mixed-mode deformations in the vicinity of the crack tip according to the variation of the thickness ratio on delamination plane. Total energy release rate is obtained by elementary beam theory considering the effect of shear deformation. The partitioning of total value into mode-I and mode-II components is also performed. The mixed-mode interlaminar fracture toughness is evaluated by experiments on specimens with several thickness ratios of delamination plane. As the part of delamination plane is thicker, the effect of shear deformation on total energy release rate is increased. Beam-type bend specimen men may be applied to obtain informations on the mixed-mode interlaminar fracture behavior of laminated composites.

  • Three-point bending specimens have been used to investigate the mixed mode fracture of green sandstone. Dimensionless stress intensity factors and T-stresses were calculated first by using the finite element method for various crack lengths, crack angles and span to length ratios. It is shown that three-point bending specimens can provide the whole range of mode mixities from pure mode I to pure mode II, provided suitable values are chosen for the crack angle and span to length ratio. The fracture test results were also used to compare with predictions of different criteria. These comparisons show that modified criteria including the influence of the T-stress agree better with experiment than the conventional criteria but that no one criterion matches perfectly the test results.

  • In this research, an efficient mixed mode I/II fracture criterion is developed for fracture investigation of orthotropic materials wherein crack is placed along the fibers. This criterion is developed based on extension of well-known Maximum Tensile Stress (MTS) criterion in conjunction with a novel material model titled as Equivalent Reinforced Isotropic Model (ERIM). In this model, orthotropic material is replaced with an isotropic matrix reinforced with fibers. A comparison between available experimental observations and theoretical estimation implies on capability of developed criterion for predicting both crack propagation direction and fracture instance, wherein the achieved fracture limit curves are also compatible with fracture mechanism of orthotic materials. It is also shown that unlike isotropic materials, fracture toughness of orthotic materials in mode $I(K)_{IC}{\mid})$ cannot be introduced as the maximum load bearing capacity and thus new fracture mechanics property, named here as maximum orthotropic fracture toughness in mode $I(K_{IC}{\mid}^{ortho}_{max})$ is defined. Optimum angle between crack and fiber direction for maximum load bearing in orthotropic materials is also defined.

  • This paper describes the effect of molding pressure, specimen geometries for Mixed Mode I/II interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composites by using asymmetrical double cantilever beam(ADCB) specimen. The value of $G_{I/IIC}$ as a function of various molding pressure is almost same at 307, 431, 585 kPa. However it shows the highest value under 307 kPa molding pressure. The effect of $G_{I/IIC}$ due to the change of initial crack length of ADCB specimen was almost negligible in this study. It turns out that the condition for mix mode quasi-static crack growth in ADCB specimen is the ratio of the crack length to that of the specimen, i.e., ${\alpha}/L<0.4$.

  • The stability of surrounding rock will be poor when the tunnel is excavated through nearly horizontal stratum. In this paper, the instability mechanism of local nearly horizontal stratum in super-large section and deep buried tunnel is revealed by the analysis of the macro failure and micro fracture. A structural model is proposed to explain the mechanics of surrounding rock collapse under the action of stress redistribution and shed light on the macroscopic analytical approach of the stability of surrounding rock. Then, some highly effective formulas applied in the tunnel engineering are developed according to the theory of mixed-mode micro fracture. And well-documented field case is made to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed analytical methods of mixed-mode fracture. Meanwhile, in order to make the more accurate judgment about yield failure of rock mass, a series of comprehensive failure criteria are formed. In addition, the relationship between the nonlinear failure criterion and $K_I$ and $K_{II}$ of micro fracture is established to make the surrounding rock failure criterion more comprehensive and accurate. Further, the influence of the parameters related to the tension-shear mixed-mode fracture and compression-shear mixed-mode fracture on the propagation of rock crack is analyzed. Results show that ${\sigma}_3$ changes linearly with the change of ${\sigma}_1$. And the change rate is related to ${\beta}$, angle between the cracks and ${\sigma}_1$. The proposed simple analytical approach is economical and efficient, and suitable for the analysis of local nearly horizontal stratum in super-large section and deep buried tunnel.

  • Considering the wind power system and the rotor blades which are composed of much technology, the wind power blade would be the most dangerous part because it revolves at high speed and weighs about dozens of tons, if the accident happens. Therefore, the light weight composite materials have been replacing as substitutional materials. The object of this study is to examine the delamination and damage for CFRP/GFRP hybrid composite that is used for strength improvement of a wind power blade. The influence of the initial crack length and fiber orientation for the interlaminar delamination was exposed for the blade safety. Plain woven CFRP instead of GFRP was inserted into the layer of the box spar for improving the strength and blade life. DCB(Double Cantilever Beam) specimen was used for evaluating fracture toughness and damage evaluation of interlaminar delamination. The material used in the experiment is a commercial material known as CF 3327 EPC in plain woven carbon prepreg(Hankuk Carbon Co.) and UD glass fiber prepreg(Hyundai Fiber Co.). From the results, crack growth rate is not so different according to the variation of the initial crack length. Mode I interlamainar fracture toughness of fiber direction $0^{\circ}$ is higher than that of $45^{\circ}$. Interlaminar fracture has an effect on fiber direction and K decreased with lower value according to increasing initial crack length. Also energy release rate fracture toughness was evaluated because CFRP/GFRP hybrid composite with a different thickness is under the mixed mode loading condition. The interlaminar fracture was almost governed by mode I fracture even though the mixed mode.

  • Application of bonded dissimilar materials in various industries are increasing. When these materials are used in structures, it needs to investigate strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics. Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials with an interface crack and an interface crack emanating from an edge semicircular hole were prepared for the static tests so that experiment of fracture toughness were carried out. Stress intensity factors of interface cracks in bonded dissimilar materials were computed with boundary element method(BEM) and the fracture criteria of mixed mode crack were analyzed. From the results, the fracture criteria and the method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in Al/ Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the fracture behavior and the fracture criterion of yellow lauan(Shorea spp.), when has used for furniture and wood structures, and to offer a reliability for wood structure and basic data for wood fracture criterion in experiments which are fracture tested under mode I, mode II and mixed mode loading condition. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Fractures in specimens which have inclined grain in yellow lauan procedeed from crack tip in the radial direction along the grain. 2. In yellow lauan, $K_{IC}RL$ was 42.1kg/$cm^{3/2}$ and $K_{IIC}RL$ was 15.8kg/$cm^{3/2}$. 3. The fracture criteria of lauan were; ($K_I/K_{IC}$)+($K_{II}/K_{IIC}$)=1 in RL system with inclined grain at $45^{\circ}$, ($K_I/K_{IC}$)+$(K_{II}/K_{IIC})^2$=1 with inclined grain at $15^{\circ}$ and $(K_I/K_{IC})^2$+$(K_{II}/K_{IIC})^2$=1 with inclined grain at $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. 4. The fracture criterion of wood could vary with the species, and the load applying condition. In order to measure the fracture criterion strictly, along with standardization of specimen geometry a large amount of experimental data is needed. 5. $K_{IC}$(critical stress intensity factor) can be predicted by grain angle. As the grain inclined angle increased, $K_{IC}$ and $K_{IIC}$ are increased.

  • Copper-based leadframe sheets were oxidized in a hot alkaline solution to form brown-oxide layer on the surface and molded with epoxy molding compound (EMC). The brown-oxide-coated leadframe/EMC joints were machined to form sandwiched double-cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens and sandwiched Brazil-nut (SBN) specimens for the purpose of measuring the fracture toughness of leadframe/EMC interfaces. The SDCB and the SBN specimens were designed to measure the fracture toughness of the leadframe/EMC interfaces under nearly mode-I loading and mixed-mode (mode I + mode II) loading conditions, respectively. Fracture surfaces were analyzed by various equipment such as glancing-angle XRD, SEM, AES, EDS and AFM to elucidate failure path. Results showed that failure occurred irregularly in the SDCB specimens, and oxidation time of 2 minutes divided the types of irregular failures into two classes. The failure in the SBN specimens was quite different from that in the SDCB specimens. The failure path in the SBN specimens was not dependent on the phase angle as well as the distance from tips of pre-cracks.

  • In the present study, the fracture toughness of U-shaped notches made of aluminum alloy Al7075-T6 under combined tension/out-of-plane shear loading conditions (mixed mode I/III) is studied by theoretical and experimental methods. In the experimental part, U-notched test samples are loaded using a previously developed fixture under mixed mode I/III loading and their load-carrying capacity (LCC) is measured. Then, due to the presence of considerable plasticity in the notch vicinity at crack initiation instance, using the Equivalent Material Concept (EMC) and with the help of the point stress (PS) and mean stress (MS) brittle failure criteria, the LCC of the tested samples is predicted theoretically. The EMC equates a ductile material with a virtual brittle material in order to avoid performing elastic-plastic analysis. Because of the very good match between the EMC-PS and EMC-MS combined criteria with the experimental results, the use of the combination of the criteria with EMC is recommended for designing U-notched aluminum plates in engineering structures. Meanwhile, because of nearly the same accuracy of the two criteria and the simplicity of the PS criterion relations, the use of EMC-PS failure model in design of notched Al7075-T6 components is superior to the EMC-MS criterion.
