  • CubeSats classified as pico-class satellite require a ground station to track the satellite, transmit a command, and receive an on-orbit data such as SOH (State-of-Health) and mission data according to the operation plan. For this, ground station system has to be properly designed to perform a communication to with the satellite with enough up- and down-link budgets. In this study, a conceptual design of the ground station has been performed for the CubeSat named as STEP Cube Lab. (Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project). The paper includes a ground station hardware interface design, link budget analysis and a ground station software realization. In addition, the operation plan of the ground station has been established considering the STEP Cube Lab. mission requirements.

  • The Satellite Operation System (SOS) has been developed for a low earth orbiting remote sensing satellite, Korea Multipurpose Satellite-I, to monitor and control the spacecraft as well as to perform the mission operation. SOS was designed to operate on UNIX in the HP workstations. In the design of SOS, flexibility, reliability, expandability and interoperability were the main objectives. In order to achieve these objectives, a CASE tool, a database management system, consultative committee for space data systems recommendation, and a real-time distributed processing middle-ware have been integrated into the system. A database driven structure was adopted as the baseline architecture for a generic machine-independent, mission specific database. Also a logical address based inter-process communication scheme was introduced for a distributed allocation of the network resources. Specifically, a hotstandby redundancy scheme was highlighted in the design seeking for higher system reliability and uninterrupted service required in a real-time fashion during the satellite passes. Through various tests, SOS had been verified its functional, performance, and inter-face requirements. Design, implementation, and testing of the SOS for KOMPSAT-I is presented in this paper.

  • Thermal analysis and control design are prerequisite essential to design the satellite. In the space environment, it makes satellite survive from extreme hot and cold conditions. In recent years CubeSat mission is developed for many kinds of purpose. Triplet Ionospheric Observatory (TRIO)-CubeSat for Ion, Neutral, Electron, MAgnetic fields (CINEMA) is required to weigh less than 3 kg and operate on minimal 3 W power. In this paper we describe the thermal analysis and control design for TRIO-CINEMA mission. For this thermal analysis, we made a thermal model of the CubeSat with finite element method and NX6.0 TMG software is used to simulate this analysis model. Based on this result, passive thermal control method has been applied to thermal design of CINEMA. In order to get the better conduction between solar panel and chassis, we choose aluminum 6061-T6 for the material property of standoff. We can increase the average temperature of top and bottom solar panels from $-70^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C $ and decrease the average temperature of the magnetometer from $+93^{\circ}C$ to $-4^{\circ}C$ using black paint on the surface of the chassis, inside of top & bottom solar panels, and magnetometer.

  • A prestudy on expendable turbine engine for high-speed vehicle was conducted. The two possible mission profiles were established to decide the engine requirements and Design Point, and Design Point analysis was performed with the values of design parameter which were obtained from similar class engines and technical references. The results showed that Specific Net Thrust is 2599.4 ft/s and Specific Fuel Consumption is 1.483 lb/($lb^*h$) at the flight condition of Sea Level, Mach 1.2. It was also found through the performance analysis on the two possible mission profiles that major design parameters for determining Net Thrust were Turbine Inlet Temperature for low supersonic flight speed and Compressor Exit Temperature for high supersonic flight speed. In addition, simple turbojet engine with axial compressor, straight annular combustor, axial turbine and fixed throat area converge-diverge exhaust nozzle was proposed as the configuration of simple low cost light engine.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed 6U Nano-Satellite high resolution video and image (HiREV) for the purpose of developing core technology for deep space exploration. The 6U HiREV Nano-Satellite has a mission of high-resolution image and video for earth observation, and the thermal pointing error between the lens and the camera module can occur due to the high temperature in camera module on mission mode. The thermal pointing error has a large effect on the resolution, so thermal design should solve it because the HiREV optical camera is developed based on commercial products that are the industrial level. So, when it operates in space, the thermal design is needed, because it has the best performance at room temperature. In this paper, three passive thermal designs were performed for the camera mission payload, and the thermal design was proved to be effective by performing on-orbit thermal analysis.

  • In this paper, the feasibility study and the parametric design of hybrid motor with HTPB/LOX were conducted for micro air launch system. Design results were compared with 1st stage of Pegasus XL for verification of hybrid motor. Results showed that hybrid motor replace solid booster if Isp of hybrid motor reaches 330sec. In addition, mission analysis was established for micro air launch system, and parametric design was conducted with design variables: number of port, initial oxidizer flux, and chamber pressure. And the region of Isp was identified by parametric study which satisfied design constraints and mission analysis.
